I heard a dude on the radio talking about outsourcing the US prison system to reduce costs. It seems to make some good sense, but of course it takes jobs from america and puts them somewhere else. Lets say you take the bad half of all prisoners and put them in jails built in mexico, under mexican laws. This dude that was talking said it costs $30k per person per year in a US jail, but can cost only $10k per person per year if it was in mexico. What do you all think? Lets say a dear friend or family member was behind bars, would you want them to be in mexico living a hard life or in the USA with climate control, healthcare and well balaned diet? BMonee

If it was a dear friend or family member I'd want them in the USA, of course. Unless, of course their criminal behavior was aimed at me. I'd send those to Guatemala. But there are many crooks, criminals and bad guys that I'd sent to Mexico. ALL rapists and ALL child molesters go to Mexico on their first offence, and kept there forever. It would probably really piss off the Mexicans though. But hey, it's nothing personal, just business. There might even be a couple that post on this board that I'd ............oh, never mind.

Mexico prisons are something to desired. All it takes is a bribe. (my brother-in-law um, sorta got locked up down there, LOL. He was only in it for about 6 hours, but thank goodness he and his buddy had cash on them!)

What's the name of that warden in Arizona(?) crap. Can't remember. Anyway, keep 'em here, but cut the cost down to 10,000 each by stopping the coddling. That warden says prisoners don't deserve for free what everyone else has to pay for. He won't even give the inmates catsup, they have to pay for it because it is NOT a right. TV? Heck no! They have to earn it. What amounts to health club memberships should either go, or make them PAY for it-hell, law abiding citizens have to pay thru the nose for "luxuries" like that. Its NOT a right. The list goes on and on. I think that warden is so right in what he does, and prisoners HATE it there...um, duh! That's the point!! So keep the prisoners here, quit spoiling them and give the guards a raise.

I think the outsourcing refers to is contracting to private industry within the U.S. to manage the facilities.

Of course if a friend or family member was in that situation, I'd want them to be as comfortable as you can. But.... being from S. America myself, and having seen the prisons (from the outside!) down there, I would say that it does not make sense to send prisoners down there, unless they have a life sentence. Jails down there are so tough, that if you send people with limited sentences into that environment, they'll come out a harder criminal than they went in. And guess where they're going when they get out? Back home to the US.....

I'd say... You do the crime... You should do the time... Bring back the hard labor prisons... Make them work for their keep. My dad helped build a "state correctional facility" (They don't even call them prisons... I guess it's not PC) He said every room (Not cell... They were called rooms) were wired for private phones with unlimited calls, cable TV including premium stations, climate control, etc... The only drawback of maximum security? You don't get a key to your room... WAH! Think I need to be arrested... Felons are livin' better than me... PFDAN...................................... Drk^Angel

Hell, send them to Angola (LA State Penitentiary). Think it's listed as the roughest/toughest prison in the US. Outsourcing is referring to taking the control of prisons out of the states budgets and giving them over to private concerns. I do believe there's a sheriff in MS, AL or GA, that makes his prisoners wear bright pink jumpsuits.

Many countries have tried similar measures in the past. France (not really separate country just a place that wasn't mainland France and extremely difficult to escape) the movie Pappilon (sp) comes to mind. Great Britan did it as well, hence the origins of what is now Austrailia. Now here is an interesting thought... Sure, Outsource to Mexico, send them the baddest of the bad, Capital Felons, Mass Murderers, the psychotically depraved etc. send Mexico the files on em, how long it took to catch them, and the true nature of what crimes they did, photos of the victims, and make THEIR goverment pay for their maintinance. Mexico should be scared $hitless enough to take serious stock into ending the corruption and bribery to get out of Mexican jails. And When the Mexican Gov't comes back to us and begs us to stop, then we can say.... "when your gov't does more to stop the large influx of illegal immigrants to the U.S (such as making life better for Mexicans so they will want to stay) or actively taking measures to physically stop people from leaving Mexico (their choice)... so will our export of our most heinous. Just a theory. 'Bus

By the term outsourcing, noone is suggesting the prisoners be 'exiled" to Mexico or anywhere else. The thought is to take control of the prisons to the private sector. It is true, sometimes, prison seems a viable option when one considers living on the streets. Frankly, I think there is plenty people can do while incarcerated. Let them "work" for their room n board. I am soo with these wardens who wont allow their prisons to become country clubs. I am also, as a taxpayer, tired of supporting these people. Well, that's just my Cathi

I'm for making prisons "Self-Supporting". Let them GROW and RAISE their own food - Make their own clothes - DO their own chores. Pay the Wardens and Guards and Let the Inmates do the rest. Cut back the tax burdens on the rest of us. $30K to house a prisoner for a year is ridiculous! A lot of people don't live on that and have to raise a family. Mr. Joe A. has the right idea. Isn't he the one who turns on the Weather Channel and says that's all the guys need to know - that it's gonna be "hotter tomorrow than it was today!" Prisons are for "PUNISHMENT!" not coddling. Let the guys do some HARD LABOR (isn't that what the judge used to say - "20 years of HARD LABOR!". Give some of these road contracts to the prisons. Cheap labor and we'd get the jobs done. Why outsource? We've got cheap labor right here in the USofA. Our prisons are overflowing with cheap labor. Just utilize it. Might teach these people a trade while we're at it. Just think of the US companies that could STAY in this country if we could utilize the cheap labor of the prisons. Of course human nature being what it is -- it would just open up a whole new world for graft and corruption.... but at least it'd be US made again! Hugs BD

LMAO Don! I call it legalized extortion! Anyway, I know someone who works as a prison guard. I don't believe he even makes what is claimed to be the cost of housing a prisoner (30K). The money is being sucked up by someone, but its the usual "Lets cut from the bottom up" mentality that has become popular today. Jimmers

In response to all the "lock 'em up and throw away the key", "if you do the crime you should do the time" and "all prisoners should make little rocks out of big rocks" attitude, I would like to remind people that not everyone is in prison for rape, murder or child molesting. Why, there a few people over on the medication and treatment board that risk prison just to treat their cluster headaches. The US, more than any other western nation loves to imprison nonviolent drug offenders, and gives them longer mandatory sentences than violent thieves and rapists get. The United States has 4% of the worlds population, but 25% of the worlds prisoners, making us the biggest jailers in the world. We are incarcerating African-American men at a rate approximately four times the rate of incarceration of black men in South Africa under apartheid. We have more black men in prison than in college. We spend about $14 billion/year just to arrest prosecute and imprison marijuana users, a drug which is known to be safer than alcohol or tobacco. That's about $100/taxpayer/year just for marijuana. Doctors are being locked up for 20+ years for treating pain with opiates that the DEA (with no medical training) deems "too much". Are we winning the drug war yet? We have enough POW's. If we need to save money on prison, maybe we should think twice about who needs to be in prison. Jesse

| I say we do both... Get rid of the stupid victimless crimes, and lock up the violent offenders in hard labor camps with absolutely no extra benefits. Make them work 40 hours a week at a fair rate, and deduct shelter, food, clothing, utility, and misc costs from their pay. If they have any left over, it can be put into an account to be used to pay for rehabilitation training, or reparations towards the victim or the vicitm's families. If they don't make enough to cover their living expenses, hand them a bill for the rest on their way out. PFDAN....................................... Drk^Angel
