PSU THON 2006 (Just an FYI)

The hours are drawing to a close on THON 2006 at Penn State University in University Park (State College), PA. The IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon is a 48 hour no-sitting, on-your-feet, bring-down-the-house "dance" marathon to raise money for kids with cancer at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. (Yes...home of the Hershey Chocolate factory, and yes...it really does smell like choclate there!) THON raises money through the Four Diamonds Fund which has been able to provide not only money towards finding a cure for childhood cancer, but also to take care of medical bills for families and provide other vital needs. It's the largest student-run philanthropy in the world. Last year, THON raised over $4.1 million dollars in the fight against childhood cancer. I was very much involved in THON through my music fraternity when at PSU, and was on the morale team as a sophomore at Penn State - which meant being a yellow-shirt wearing moraler to keep people up and happy for 48 straight hours. THON has a special place for 2 of our cluster family here... My little buddy, Jared Quell, died in 2004 at the age of 9 from cancer, but his family is still a big part of my family - and his memory lives on. He was a great kid - favorite color was orange and he loved VW bugs. Nancy (OneEyeBlind) had a nephew, Christopher, who also died of childhood cancer in 2004. He was 16 (I think? Nancy would have to correct me on these details!!) and fought a very valiant fight....into remission and then had a relapse which ultimately took his life - but not his spirit. He chose to go on hospice to spend his last loving days with his very loving family. Christopher was sponsored by the men's basketball team at PSU. I can't figure how to post my shutterfly pic of me and Jared now that I have my mac...but anyways....greatest little buddy. In a time where young people are not often highly revered for doing good in this world, I just wanted to share a little info of how a lot of young people have done a lot of good. We're not all bad eggs. Thon 2006...For the Kids... http://www.thon.org Carrie

I hope that it'll raise lots of money for the good cause. I've been trying to look for some cancer charity back here in Finland. It's a matter close to my heart after both my dad and uncle died of cancer and two of my aunts have had cancer scare. Best wishes, Sanna

Thanks Sanna From the THON website today: Quote:$4.2 Million FOR THE KIDS! THON 2006, "Together We'll Prevail", raised $4,214,748.18 for The Four Diamonds Fund at the Penn State Children's Hospital. |
| Very cool I know cancer is something very close to your heart - as it is to so many people. Hope you find an organization in Finland to be a part of. Hugz, Carrie

Sanna, I know in SA they have something like "a Cuppa for Cancer". Women give tea and coffee parties and offices have a collection next to their coffee machines on that specific day. All the donations from that day go to CANSA, the Cancer Association of South African. They also have a day where everyone either shaves off their hair or spray colour it, in very bright colours. They do this in the shopping malls and public places in sympathy for all the chemo patients. On this day a specific amount is charged to have your hair cut or coloured. The moneys from this also goes to CANSA. It is the time of year when people forget their differences and laugh and greet each other like old friends because everyone that has coloured hair or a shaved head belongs to the same support group. The colour only washes out after about a week and obviously the hair takes a longer time to grow back. It is bigger than winning a rugby match here.
