Going to London....or at least my kid is.

My youngest son is traveling over to London this summer for some advanced hours in international studies. He will get five days off in the middle of the session for personal travel, and he'll have odd days off during the studies. Does anyone have any good ideas on where he should go and what to do? His main concern is seeing the beaches at Normandy and some WWII locations. He really wanted to play a round of golf at St. Andrews....LOL....then found out that was out of the question. He was totally shocked when he found out how close Paris was to London, but then we travel 25 minutes just to get to the grocery store down here. Not sure this kid should be let loose in another country.... . Rox

To be honest Wendy, I'm just damn glad he has shown and interest in something other than beer and overly endowed size 0 blondes. But, I've had to watch Band of Brothers so often I can quote dialogue. Rox

LOL War IS interesting. We took our 6 year old there and to the sister museum at Duxford which is mainly planes (some great and famous American planes there) and apart from the Holocaust Exhibition which we avoided as it is a bit much for a 6 year old, he loved all of it. W

If he gets to London, the Tower of London is great. They have some stuff there that is fascinating. Like the crown jewels and the torture chamber (got some real neat play things there). I loved Bath - the ancient designs were something else. For my money, he can skip Paris - it's dirty and the people are NOT friendly to Americans for the most part. Tell him to brush up on his dart game if he's planning to visit the pubs (and he WILL). Just tell him to play it by ear and have a great time. Hugs BD

Sorry add on Roxy- Duxford isn't easy to get to but if your son wants to get to me (40 mins by train from London) and can bear a 6 year old boy who will hero worship him all day, I am happy to drive him to Duxford for the day. He would need to be interested in air warfare though (there is some land stuff but the Imperial War Museum in Londonis better for that) Duxford has an American Air Museum in it which he might like including a B17 Flying Fortress called Sally B which still flies due to donations from the USA and also : (whatever all these are!) Spad S-13 (r, s) Boeing Stearman PT-17 (s) North American AT-6D Texan (s) Consolidated B-24M Liberator North American P-51D Mustang (r) Douglas C-47 Skytrain (s) Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress Republic P-47D Thunderbolt Grumman TBM-3 Avenger (s) Boeing B-29A Superfortress North American B-25J Mitchell (s) Lockheed SR-71A Blackbird Boeing B-52D Stratofortress Lockheed U2-C (s) North American F-100D Super Sabre (s) Bell UH-1 Huey McDonnell Douglas F-4J Phantom II General Dynamics F-111E Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II (s) Lockheed T-33A (s) Dodge T214-WC54 Ambulance Ford M718 MUTT Ambulance Conversion

Roxy, don't worry, there are lots of ch folks in UK to keep your son in order... Seriously, I'm sure that he'll have a great time! I know I did and I spent 3 years in London, studying for my BA. I have lots of great memories and I'll be back for a visit asap. My tips: British Museum! Nobody should miss that. And if he wants to see lots of sights in a short time, I'd suggest that he'll take tube to Westminster and then he'll see Houses of Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Cleopatra's Needle and river Thames. Sanna P.S. My best friend is going to London in two weeks and all she's going to visit is Oxford Street shops...

Ya'll are so sweet to offer him a family over there. I am giving him all the phone numbers, so you may be hearing from him. He wants me to fly over for his five day break, and I really want to....but, I'm not sure what kind of shape I will be in after surgery, and the builder is breaking ground on our house while I'll be in the hospital. He says the house will take 8 mths to finish, so we'll be at the half way point in the house when he wants me to fly over. Between the knee and the house....not sure being gone is a possiblity. Barb....he really isn't interested in Paris. When we lived in Saudi Arabia, we stopped in Paris....so he's been there and done that city. He is focused on the golf and WWII stuff. Helen....Wendy....if you see this goofy grin headed your way.......RUN

| They have wheelchairs over there and the builder would prolly be glad to get rid of you for a week as well. Might even offer to pay for the trip. GO! Bill

| Don't be sorry Wendy....he is a cutie, an arrogant cutie, but cute nonetheless. Bill, you're right. I think the builder would probably pay me to leave town... Helen, Tyler is leaving on July 6, returning home on August 6. So it would be sometime in between. Does that help you date wise??? LOL...sorry, as of right now, I don't know when his five days of free time are. I do know he will be staying somewhere close to Oxford.....I think......maybe......not real sure. Our family is such planners.... Rox

Let's hope his free time doesn't coincide with the convention! If it did could he maybe stay an extra few days at the end of his trip? Either way I will definitely do all I can to help. Oxford is lovely, it's not far from Stratford on Avon, the home of Shakespeare which is absolutely beautiful and you would love. It's a pretty easy drive from there to Stonehenge if he would like to see that too and I'll happily play chauffeur! Of course if he comes up to Nottingham I can make a bloody fortune selling dates! Would you like me to pick up a pile of information leaflets for you on tourist attractions and castles etc so he and you can have a look at them? It's no bother. I'm going to go down to Kent on Thursday so I can pick up a load of stuff from there too about WWII stuff and Dover Castle etc which is an amazing place crammed full of all sorts of stuff connected with WWII and previous history too of course? Carrie and Matt I shall pick up piles for you too! This is so exciting.. it's going to be my cluster year in the BEST possible way!
