Hello all- And sorry I haven't posted in a few days. Have been really busy at school but of course it's only a matter of time until the beast shows its ugly face again. I still had only been experiencing some minor shadows since Tues the 8th at 10:30 a.m. But, yesterday morning I woke up wit what I thought was just some minor back pain so I went to school and tried to go on with my day as usual. About 12:00, the pain in the lower right side of my back was terrible and I ended up in the hospital. Mom's freakin out, girlfriend's freakin out and I can do nothing but cry because I didn't think anything but the DEMON could make me feel this kind of pain. Anyway, to make a long story short, spiral CT, blood tests= kidney stones and some sort of bacterial in fection. So they shoot me up with Tordal and send me home with a script for Cipro. And what did I gain from this? Last night, the monster came back, 12:30 and 2:30(both KIP 10s). And another missed day of classes because I am laying in bed trying to wait out the discomfort of trying to pass these stones. Some of the discomfort is gone as I seem to have eliminated a couple but I'm just hoping the narcotics didn't restart a whole new cycle for me. I'm still remaining hopeful because so far today I've been okay. But, I'm always skeptical and/or doubtful. Wishing PFDANs to all. Pfunk

Just curious, does that mean that the Top may be part of the reason I got the stones in the first place? If so, have you stopped taking it? What are you taking instead? I have heard that it may have some effect onthe kidneys and now I guess I know what. I might need to ask my doc to put me on something else if I'm gonna go through that evry time I take this stuff. Tahnks for the info. Pfunk

I had kidney stone problems several times when I was younger. I believe they were caused by too much milk – too little water. They hurt pretty bad but once passed the pain is gone. I think the narcotics are bad for CHs. My last cycle started a couple of weeks after surgery and pain killers. The cycle wasn’t too bad. I think my cycles are better now because: I’m getting older, and I use O2 - staying away from imitrex (I still use it some times). I have had 3 surgeries in the last 6 months (general anesthesia and vicodin) each time I started getting shadows, one time a 2 month cycle started.

Kidney stones are a side effect of topomax. My wife had a problem with them as well.

Thanks again for all the well wishes. The thing that I am feeling most concernd with right now is the topamax. Because I have heard that it can cause kidney problems, I wondered if it may be what caused these stones. I don't drink alot of milk so I know that's no the issue. Because I'm in the Phys Ed & Health field and a CH sufferer I drink enough water to float two battleships during your average day so that's not the problem. I haven't had a soda in well over two weeks. My diet is healthier than it has been in years. I'm stumped other than tha Top. Pfunk P.S. OW!!! Getting rid of these things is almost as painful as having them!

Ditto on the Topamax. Everyhting I have read on Top indicates stones as a major SE. While taking the Topamax, I literally drank 70-100 OZs of water a day as this is recommended to minimize stone development. I wasn't on the Topamax very long, so I can not vouch for the efficacy of this approach personally.

I had kidney stones. Diagnosed myself, but nothing in my home remedies got rid of them, so I finally broke down and went to the doc. He gave me a second opinion that disagreed with mine - he said it was arthritis! I told him kidney stones sounded much younger and we needed to get rid of them. He put me on celebrex and sure nuff - they got better. Seriously, hope you get them passed -- if it's anything like what I thought I had -- they hurt like hell.... Hugs BD

Pfunk, Gotta suck with everything else right now. Had them once.... Man so not cool. My body freaked out because of the pain and I went into convulsions. Hospital bound at that point. Sorry your having to deal with this I feel for you. Wish you better days. Oh - not a nice word to say about Topamax. I know it works for some people and I am happy for them just not worth it for me. Wishing PF days, llreed

Sorry to hear that you have stones on top of the beast. If you drink frozen lemonaide from concentrate it will help to break down and prevent the stones. There is something about the acid that helps. I hope it works for you as well as it did for my sister. Good luck.

After the second bout with kidney stones, I stopped taking the Topo. I haven't had a problem since then. I forgot where I copied this from, but check it out: "About 1 in 50 adults taking Topamax have developed kidney stones. They are more common in men and in those who have had them before. They also may be more likely to occur if Diamox (acetazolamide) or Zonegran (zonisamide) is also taken or if the ketogenic diet (a special diet sometimes used to control seizures in children) is followed. Topamax therefore should be used cautiously in people taking Diamox or Zonegran or using the ketogenic diet. To help prevent kidney stones, drink plenty of water, juice, or other fluids (8 glasses every day for adults). Sharp pains in your side or lower back may signal the onset of a kidney stone. Consult a doctor immediately or go to the emergency room." UNsolved

Just checkin in to inform those who have been ative on this thread and those who have given me any help with my med quwstions in the past that I went back to the doc today. We discontinued the topamax and have decided to start abck with the verapamil. The side effect are a lot less sever and I can't tkae the chances of something happening to my kidneys b/c kidney problems run in my family. Thanks to all for your help and concerns. LYGS Pfunk
