Just curious: Why is it always the responsibility of the male to ensure that reservations are made, flowers are bought, jewerly is purchased, and multiple cards are accquired for each and every valentine's day? Just once in my married life it would be nice for the female to take an active giving role instead of sitting on the receiving end and being pissed when the day did not live up to their expectations. Valentine's day is just an expensive pain in the arz! I'm done -- flame away!

| For the same reason that the toilet seat has to be down. It just is. Don't fight it you'll lose every time.

| I agree. It's the same on anniversaries. Isn't it our anniversary too? And as far as the toilet seat thing, if they don't look, they deserve a wet a$$. ...............sorry honey, I won't let it happen again...........

Echo! You held that in for one whole DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am proud of you! As far as my eloquent reply, complete with cluck-clucks and sympathetic tones....... ..........babycakes, YOU trained her!!! Next year, luxuriate on the couch the week prior, and peruse the jewelry catalogues....artfully array brochues on your new car choices, drop not-so-subtle hints and then, when SHE blows it, YOU pout..... The game is just no fun unless the rules change........ I'll bet what ya did was just perfect, Echo-but then, what do I know??? Groundhog day is kinda fun, doncha think??? Cathi

It's not the responsibility of the MAN....my husband always asks me what I want this year I simply asked for a kiss and a hug and some snuggle time to feel close, and he happily abliged. I ask my husband every year what he wants, and he always tells me, It's the mans job to give gifts on Val day, he never asks for anything...never wants anything...your situation is different from mine, I do not expect anything from my husband as we show each other how much we care EVERY day of the year...Valentines is a marketing holiday...chocolate makes you fat, flowers die, cards get thrown away...what's the point? no money has to be spent, just some sweet jesture from BOTH parties, that is all we should need.... okay, I'm done, I hope you don't take that as a flame, I'm just telling you how it is in my house...I grew up with all boys, so I tend to take the side of the male in the battle of the sexes....send her flowers when seh DOESN'T expect it, that's what Valentines day is about to me...okay, NOW I'm done...

I got a card and a boquet of flowers that Jesse bought at 11:00pm the night before after he got out of work. I didn't expect anything more from him (although I would be secretly surprised and elated if he got me some jewelry) because he is a simple guy who, for the past 12 years, has always gotten me flowers and a card (sometimes a box of chocolates) for VD day. Basically, I accept him for who he is and the decisions he makes. I think any devoted wife would do the same. Oh yeah, forgot to add that I got him a card along with some fudge and chocolate covered pretzels from the local confectionary.

I sent my husband a dozen roses. Cookie roses that is and on a stick to for stems and they are put in a plastic vase that holds all of them. And of course a mylar baloon to go with it and a nice card. I had this delivered to him while at work. Some woman do think ahead. After all he deserves it since he keeps the toilet seat lid down just for me

Let's see now... my boyfriend gave me a story he had written about our romance, printed on a blue A4 sheet (it's one of my fave colors), with pics of dolphins on it (which I love). He gave me also a cd, which he had made himself of country songs (he knows I love country) and he gave me also an orchid (I love flowers). And what I gave him? He loves poetry, so I gave him a book, which was a poetry collection. I gave him a card with thoughts written on it. I also cooked special lunch and dinner. We had a wonderful time together. Sanna

Just like with all other Holidays anymore, it's all about $$$. They all have been so over commercialized that the meaning of most Holidays has been lost. Example: President's Day...I see more towel & bed sale commercials than I do programs remembering & honoring the former Presidents.

| While I agree with the statement, I have to add that holidays are what YOU make of them. Not what the TV says. For example this Valentine's day I... ...Helped my kids make a Card for their Grandparents ...sorted through the various valentines they received from their schoolmates and watched the excitement in their eyes as they saw one from their best friend or a picture of their favorite cartoon character. ...made a trip across town to tell my mother that I love her and to have dinner with her. ...called my Dad and told him I love him. ...spent time creating a valentine for someone special instead of buying one or sending an e card. Holidays, just like life, are what you make of it... I think holidays are just a reminder to stop, take time out from life, enjoy your kids/family/spouse/partner, tell someone you love them and smile. I didn't spend over 10 bucks this whole Valentine's Day...but I sure made a lot of people smile But then again...I am an optimist. DD
