Hello again everyone...  anyone remember me??????
I'm only in season for three months, every three years.  Surprise!  This is my year of misery.  Right now I'm just shadowing, HARD.   So, I know they're comming..  I'm so scared... now I have a 3 and 4 year old, a full time job, and 2 part time jobs.  I need to go to the docotor, and get on a preventitive med, NOW.. I have no idea what i was on before, all I know is it didn't work.... I used an imitrex spray last night, and it just made it worse.  What do some of you reccomend I tell the Dr. to start me on?
I get hit at least 8 times a day when I'm in full season.. I think by the strength of my shadows, I only have a little less than a month before there here to stay for a while.  HELP ME PLEASE!  Thank you..

Hey there,

I remember you and I'm not even here 2 yrs.

Sorry you are in pain again and starting to let the dread come back.

Gotta take a deep breathe and know that they come and go my dear!

you will be fine as you have been before.

It's just horrid pain Wink

Despite not being a "newbie" I'm gonna give ya my newbie spiel..........yada yada yada bla blah blah Grin

This is a great resource to know like the back of your hand...print it out and give it to the doc

http://www.brightok.net/~mnjday/chtherapy.pdf

It will present the appropriate treatments that you should seek and your doctor should know!!!

If you want an abortive with the least amount of side-effects O2 should not only be requested but demanded from your doctor!!!

http://www.maplefallswebdesign.com/misc/oxygen/oxygen.htm

I have used Zyprexa as an abortive and have found it to work (for me) as fast as Imitrex and without the "hangover"

http://www.clusterheadaches.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=meds;action= display;num=1120904753

If you do have the "typical" wake you up in the middle of the night horrors then.... Melatonin might be very helpful
Many of us (myself included) have found that taking 6-9mg (some take more) about a 1/2 hour to 45minutes prior to bed have Knocked out the night visits and can finally get sleep.

With the exception of 10-12 times.....I have slept through the night since August '04 (went chronic in March 05).....Still get hit during the day but my overall quality of life is better because I am not as exhausted all the time.

Some people report that it seems to make them worse....The fact is that we are all different and respond differently to everything therefore it may or may not...

The one thing I will tell you as far as my experience was that I had to stick with it...The first night I took melatonin, I was awoken with a doozy only I was too groggy to find my O2 .....It got a lot better for me....I then slept through the night but would get slammed about 1/2 hour after waking up....kinda like knocking the beast off schedule.....then again I was peaking and this cycle has been all over the place with no real pattern.
I stayed with melatonin and have had decent sleep overall. (Maybe I should start folowing my own advice again hahahaha!)

It may help and it is natural with not too many sideeffects....also ask your doctor b/c if there are any side effects or contraindications...I think they have to do with mild depression.....

Like I said we are all different.

Best wishes, good luck & stay as positive as you can!!!!

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Hi Lisa,

sorry that the beast is back... Sad

What comes to preventatives, verpamil helped me. I had to try plenty of others before finding that one, though. I hope a better luck for you and a great neuro. Smiley

Wishing you lots of PF days asap,

Too new to remember, but sorry your back and with such a famliy and social load no doubt this will be very difficult cycle.  It looks like you have much reading to do with all of the tips and links provided although no one has reported any universal miracle cures that I am aware of, but maybe one of the newer regimens will work for you , so read up.
Despite the health risks associated with it, Prednisone tapers have reduced my cycles to several weeks from several months.  I use O2 as an abortive and Verapamil as a preventive with 6mg of Melatonin to help with the sleeplessness brought on by the beast and the Prednisone.
I hope this cycle isn't as bad as you remember, and don't forget, the lights are always on here if you need an ear.

Glad you found your way back but not about the reason. I don't have anything new unless the following is new to you. It worked for me.

     Dr. Wright’s Circulatory Technique:

I am not sure what mechanism is triggered by this but whatever it is, at least indirectly helps kill the pain. I do know that this technique has nothing to do with meditation, relaxation, or psychic ability. It is entirely physical and takes some work. It involves concentrating on trying to redirect a little circulation to the arms, hands, or legs. It can described as a conscious circulatory flexing. Increased circulation will result in a reddening and warming of the hands. Try to think of it as filling your hands with redirected blood. The important and difficult part is that it has to be done without interruption through the pain. Do not give up in frustration. It may not work on the first try. Every now and then it will work almost immediately. I lived for those moments. Try experimenting between attacks. You will find that it gets easier with practice.

I was given less than five minutes instruction in the use of method. The doctor, while placing his arm on his desk, showed me that he could slightly increase his arm and hand circulation. After several attempts, I was able to repeat this procedure and use it successfully. I have had about a 75% success rate shortening these attacks. My 20 minute attacks were often reduced to 10 minutes or less. Once proven that I had a chance to effectively deal with this horror, I always gave it a try as I had nothing to lose but pain.

Perhaps it will help if you think of it as trying to fill the arm as if it is were an empty vessel. I used to try to imagine I was pushing blood away from my head into my arm. Use your imagination. There is one man who wrote that his standing barefoot on a concrete floor shortened his attacks. This may be similar as it draws some circulation away from the head. Cold water, exercise, or anything affecting circulation, seems to be worth a try. My suggestion is to not let up immediately when the pain goes. Waiting a minute is probably a good idea. So long as you do not slack off, this has a chance of working.

This technique is very useful while waiting for medication to take effect or when none is available. It costs nothing, is non-invasive, and can be used just about anywhere. It is not a miracle but it helped me deal with this horror. It can be a bit exhausting but the success rate was good enough for me and a cluster headache sufferer will do just about anything to end the pain. It gives us a fighting chance.

Lisa,

To hell with the conventional meds and doctors. Now is your chance to go straight to clusterbusters.com and bust the episode before the CH and conventional meds get a stranglehold on you. PM me if you need help on this matter.

I like your username psycofemale0403. Are you in any way related to psycofemale0182 or psycofemale0302? I know them.

Mushrooms are not the only CB treatment, you know. Seeds containing LSA are legal. And I'm pretty sure mushrooms are not legal anywhere in the US. Spores, however, are not illegal in Il.

I'm with Chewy on this one.

To start out by saying, "To hell with the conventional meds and doctors. Now is your chance to go straight to cluster busters.com"

I do believe that clusterbusters is a very viable route but with the implied risk that its illegality brings that it should be one that is evaluated by someone who has taken the proper time to weigh the risk/reward ratio appropriately.  folks that eventually arrive at clusterbusters and go forward with it most often fall into that category.

For an episiodic who hasn't tried some of the conventional options (many that others have found relief with) it may be that clusterbusters isn't the first direction to go to.

I will likely try the clusterbuster route myself one day if my present arsenal stops working but have to be honest. I do worry about the illegality. And everyone should weigh that before they throw out all the other options.

Oh, I agree that the decision needs to be well thought out. Whether the risks outweigh the benfits is an individual decision.
However, conventional med advice was given already. A mention of CB was not out of line, IMHO.

Does every thread on this board have to turn in to a debate? I am sure that she can read the advice she was givin and take what she wants from it. I am also sure she can decide for herself what risks she is willing to take.
