Mike I am so sorry to hear that.I will keep her in my prayers.Something to think about is not only healing the outside but the inside.I can only imagine how scared and confused she must be about dogs now.I hope she is able to work out any fears.I will be praying for all involved her,her family and I can imagine how upset the dogs handler must be.It might be hard to see right now but the officer probably relives the moment too and wishes it was him attacked and not her. That's terrible. If the dog spooks that easy he shouldn't have been around a grade school. I'm with Bob -- get lots of pics, witnesses statements and a good lawyer. There's no excuse for this.... Hugs BD

Even though I think it's important to teach 6th graders how to package their drugs so drug dogs can't detect them, maybe there's a better way to allocate the police budget. One more victim of the drug war.... Sorry Jesse

evidence of what is often a waste of police resources, doing touchy feely community stuff. the dog should not have been relied upon as Public Relations tool. Companion/Service dogs are the only dogs trained for this type of activity. it's a shame for your niece as well as the dog and the officer involved. the officer would probably admit that placing a dog in this type of environment is outside of the scope of what the dog has been trained for. misplaced priorities of local government. and what would the kids learn? that people try to hide drugs and this dog will find it? wow! that was worth it. sad. scott

Michael, So sorry to hear of this awful news! Sounds like the dog is supposed to sniff out drugs, but instead "spooks" easily and bites children. Please give your niece our very best well wishes! Hope the injury heals quickly and remind her that not all dogs are mean! I was afraid of dogs for years after I got bitten (hardly even a scratch, really though - but it scared me!) - I stopped being afraid when my parents got our labrador puppy. Hugz to you and your family! Carrie

| Maybe wrong. But often local police in efforts to rationalize ever growing budgets are being "encouraged" to spend greater amounts of time "promoting" what the resources are being used for. These dogs are expensive and the only way to rationalize is to get them out in the community doing "meet and greets".

Thanks for your support everyone. Cortney had a plastic surgeon put in 15 stitches in her cheek. She stayed home from school to rest today. It's all over the news in Louisville. More TV cameras are coming today. BTW, we meet the attorney at 3 today ! UNsolved

| True but sadly enough the departments pay very little towards the upkeep. They supply food and thats about it. It all falls on the handler to keep the dog properly. Theyt may lead you to belive that the Departments take care of these dogs but they dont. In some case not even medical. If the dog isn't adopted by the handler upon retirement they may euthenize. I hope Coutneys settlement is enough to put her through vet school. At least you can be a celebrity for awhile Courtney!

Sorry for this sad story. Hope she has no more problems. I'm with most of you. What a waste of time, money, energy and just plain misuse of resources. (of all kinds) What we couldn't do with the billions wasted on this stupid war on drugs election tool. I love dogs but one more incident and the dog should should be history; maybe less than one..... If Courtney shows a "fear" of dogs after this, try what Lizzie says - get her a puppy so she'll get over the fear. That's what we had to do for my grandson. He was terrified of "big" dogs, but now we have Homer and he's growing with him and is not near as afraid of big dogs now. Kids bounce back, but sometimes need a prop to help them. Give Courtney lots of hugs. Hugs BD

Your neice is making national news among drug law reformers. http://www.daregeneration.blogspot.com/ BTW it is described as a "DARE dog". This presentation was was part of the DARE program which is a well funded and ineffective program. If it's not a waste of police resources, it's a waste of federal tax money. Quote:A thorough review of the most widely used school-based substance abuse prevention program in the United States, Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE), found that the program does not prevent drug use or change students' attitudes toward drugs. Conducted by the General Accounting Office (GAO), the research arm of Congress, the review analyzed six studies that followed students who participated in DARE, starting in fifth and sixth grades, for up to a decade. |
