Prayers needed for a little one... (Updated 1/21)

Hey you guys,
I need to ask for some prayers (or good vibes, what have you) for one of my little angels at work. Obviously confidentiality keeps me from going into details, but basically he's being kept alive on life support, and we hope to be able to withdraw support today if the family agrees.
He's only a little over a week old, but he didn't make it...he's gone on and it's just his body here with us. It's a very heartbreaking situation. I spent the last two nights taking care of him. This morning, around 2am, my friend came in the room to see the baby (she hadn't taken care of him before), and I had tears in my eyes telling her the details. So she gave me a hug. Even nurses need hugs sometimes...so maybe I could use a prayer too.
I don't work until 11pm tonight. Yesterday I only got about an hour's sleep or so because I had this baby on my mind after a long night. I'm hoping I get a little more sleep today since I go in later. I'm probably going to give them a call at work later on today to find out if they did let him go... I'm not scheduled to have him tonight even if he's still alive by the time I go to work.
Just heartbroken right now...

WOW- What a sad story....God always has a reason for everything..It's just hard to figure a reason for this....Thanks for sharing this touching story--Makes you realize how blessed some of us are!

Have helped many through death. The babies never ever seem to leave. Can still give you every single detail of every one of them. My families prayers are with you and the little guy. But you're right, he's already gone, just have to get the family to let the shell go.

heres a prayer and poem I like.Sometimes in life we can only pray for the strength to let them go and be angels.you and all those that work in neo-natal icu are Angels.may these moments your going through now be few and far between.remember these but also remember the success stories that walk out your door.

Thanks guys... I often feel like a blessed angel...especially on night shift. I get to spend time bringing them through the long, dark nights. I can hold their tiny hands when they're crying or going through something painful.
There are actually two babies going through this state right now, but mine is most likely to be the first to go. Sometimes that head cooling thing I've talked about is not as great as we would hope. It's not that the head cooling harmed them - but rather that they were so bad off by the time they were placed on it, that it probably wouldn't have done any good...
Earlier today, my friend said things were still in chaos. That's what tears me up the most. I just wish for peace for the baby and the family. No matter how hard it is for them to let go, it will be worse for them with each day they hang on like this.
But we all must smile when we can, laugh when we can, and cry when we need to...even get angry sometimes. That's how we get through the job. 
I'm still hoping they've come to a resolution by the time I get to work in about 3 hours or so.

Miracles come in many different shapes and colors, dont they.
So glad you are there to help these wee ones, just know, wh en it's really tough, you have many friends here who will do their best to keep you strong enough to help these babies..

Well, he's still alive. Perhaps today... They just can't seem to let go...and whatever their reasons for that, we must respect it. It still absolutely breaks my heart, however. 
Last night I took care of two different kids in the room across the hall. The charge nurse for the last 2 nights didn't want to put me in the same assignment again...it isn't healthy for anybody to take care of a baby under those circumstances even for 8 or 12 hours straight...let alone last night would have been my 3rd night in a row of that.
Instead I picked up another HUGE challenging kid to take care of and one little guy who has a lot of problems from being a preemie, but was totally cute. It was a pretty busy night! Fortunately an EXCELLENT resident was on last night, and when the one kid was having troubles, she actually stood at her bedside for about an hour. That was cool. That never happens.
I had to go to the neurologist this morning after I got off work, and it was a rather lengthy appointment that I'll write about at another time when I get my thoughts together. So I actually have been awake since about 7pm last night. And I've slept a total of about 7 hours since Sunday!
Just wanted to post a bit of an update....but since I'm seeing double because I'm so tired...I think I'll go to bed now! Joe (my boyfriend) is coming over later to cheer me up.
Thanks again for all the prayers and well wishes. This means a LOT to me...

thanks for passing on the news. That little angel has been on my mind since we chatted. God's his nurse now, and will certainly remember all the caring you did for him while he was here.
Now, remember, you have your "Joe" with you there. Lean on him when you need, cuz from what you said, I just KNOW he'll be there for you !!!!!
