There's no way you could have missed it if you have a TV or get a newspaper.  "Author" James Frey, who's book "A Million Little Pieces" became an Oprah book, is from my tiny town in Michigan!

Hot dog!  This just might get us on the map.

If he had just written a book about fiction, it would have been OK.  He had to say it was autobiographical.

A notorious liar from my own town!  I could just pee my pants!

(excerpts)

The discrepancies and Mr. Frey's reported admissions of falsifying details of his life raise questions about the publishing industry's increasing reliance on nonfiction memoirs as a fast track to the best-seller list. It is not at all uncommon to see new books marketed as nonfiction containing notes to readers saying the author has altered the time sequence of events, created composite characters, changed names or otherwise made up details of a memoir. "A Million Little Pieces," however, contains no such disclaimer.

But given the response from viewers yesterday on Internet message boards devoted to Mr. Frey's book, Ms. Winfrey might find herself having to address questions about its truth. On Ms. Winfrey's site, some readers expressed dismay that they had been lied to. But on Mr. Frey's own site, bigjimindustries.com, one fan who identified herself as Julie wrote: "Even if his story is fake, he opened up the eyes of so many people. How about if we all focus on that instead of accusing him of being a liar?"

You know, people need to get a life and quit trying to ruin others. The guy just had a great imagination of what he thought happened. Sometimes we just don't remember things "exactly" the way others remember them. Human nature - give the guy a break. If it's good reading who gives a rat's rear. Enjoy it and go on to something else. Get a life!

You have to be in your 50s to remember something like this. Grace Metalious here we come. She wrote Peyton Place and it caused a helluva mess, probably not so different as this at the beginning anyway, I haven't been keeping up on it though.

I saw this guy on Larry King for a few minutes but didn't connect the dots. Thanks for the information. I loined sumpin'

Charlie, I do remember Peyton Place and all the stink. She got a lot of put down about it and a few lawsuits didn't she? Can't remember the details. Heck, I thought she wrote it about Gladewater - guess it fit almost any small town, but it really hit some nerves.

I've been there (30 years ago), it's a nice, little town....

I think it'll survive the author's indiscretions....
