Newbie for MA.

Hello All,

Glad to have found this site...it only took me 23 years of suffering.  I've tried many things over the years and have just about had it.  The latest meds that the doc has put me on is "Nortriptyline"...anyone heard of it??  Also, can anyone tell me how to get insurance to pay for more thatn 2 Imitrex shots per month??  This is probably the worse CH attack I've had yet.

Thanks,
Mary

Hi Mary

You probably want to give  us a little background on your headaches, diagnosis and history.  Have you been diagnosed with CH?

I personally have no experience with Nortriptyline but others may.  Ask you Doc. if he/she has some Imitrex samples you can have most drug salesmen load em' up, if you time it right you'll have a reasonable supply.  Insurance coverage is something I can't help with.

In any case 23 years is a long time to suffer, I hope you're eposidic.  There seems to be a lot of "worse attacks yet" going around this year and I believe someone started a thread on the subject.  There's a lot of good information available on the site.

Read and learn.

Hi Mary

Right up the road in Weymouth.

Have your Doc write a letter of neccesity to the insurance company and also call them directly.

Did this Doc Rx the Nortriptyline specifically for CH ?

Check your PMs. (upper right hand corner of the board)

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Yes, I have personal experience with it.  It is also known as Pamelor.  It's classified as a tricyclic antidepressant and is useless for CH.  Docs like to prescribe it for migraine.  All it ever did was make me sleepy (which is not a good thing for me....).

Hi Mary,
I've taken nortriptyline perscribed at the same time as bunch of other things to help my migraines (I get migraines and CH)...and on purpose to make me sleep better. Certainly made me sleepy, but didn't do much for my migraines and didn't touch the CH. As steve said it is also used  as an anti-depressant...usually in higher doses than for HA's.

Welcome and I hope you find some relief.
I also hope you find you way to that cook out Smiley.

wE'RE COMING BY THE WAY........ OH HEY MARY.... MY FAVORITE NAME... AFTER OUR MOTHER IN HEAVEN DON'T GET ME GOING I'M PART NUN BUT YOU ALL KNOW THAT...

To the point Nortryptaline is probably the 1st med that docs prescribe.  I would seriously love to know who your doc is too since we are in the need of a good Neuro.  If you want to meet people with the same horror as you.  You really should try to make the cookout.  Its a family of people like no other.   Good luck and God bless.....
