imitrex and verapamil seem to work for many of us - imitrex is quick acting, but verapamil takes time to kick in, and many people have to adjust the levels upwards before it prevents. Oxygen is also good for aborting a headache, but it has to be high flow rate/non rebreather mask - a tube in the nose is generally not effective. Opiates and other painkillers are something most people avoid - they don't work that well and have side effects/are habit forming. A few people report that SSRIs like fluoxetine help in conjuction with other meds, but that is not widely recognized as a treatment. Do you have a diagnosis of CH, or is it 'severe headaches' ?
