Glad to find some support

Hi there. I am 23 and been suffering for about a year and a half. It all started the day i brought my newborn home from the hospital.A terrible sharp stinging pain in my left temple. It came quick and lasted for about 10 min.I wanted to literally scratch my brain out through my ear.For 9 months this happened, everyday around 4 in the afternoon on the same side. For those 10-15 min everyday i wanted to die.I would put my finger in my left ear and scratch,as if it were an ich-an excruciating itch.I finally went to a neurologist (after the gp prescribed nasonex for my sinuses..duh) and was told to try melatonin or stop breastfeeding.Well i bought the melatonin and never used it and i couldnt stop bf.Soooo, here we are,7 months after and im no longer breastfeeding and still not using a preventitive med.You see,the neurologist said that the hormonal change from nursing may have something to do with it.I dont think so.Melatonin is the chemical which regulates sleep pattern in the brain, but my headaches don't come at night.Wtf am i to do?

Hello and I'm so sorry you have to be here. You should be enjoying these first few months with your baby much more so lets see if we can do something to help you Smiley
First of all there are many types of HA similar to CH but with very different treatments. Take the cluster quiz on the left (3rd button under the new visitor one) and from there follow the link to another 30 question survey. Neither will take very long but both will be very instrumental in helping you find out if it is CH or anything else. Any pain that is ruining your quality of lifes needs to be sorted asap and obviously getting the right meds for you is paramount. Read as much as you can from here and print off what you find that is relevant so you can take it back to discuss with your doctor. A safe treatment if you are still feeding is O2 which is fantastic for CH ( for me at any rate!) so read the oxygen info too.
I hope you get sorted soon but if you have any questions after reading up then please ask as much as you like  Smiley
Let us know how you are getting on

Wishing you some relief from the pain that you are experiencing.
Some people are lucky enough to get more than 1 type of "headache" Parties in our brain....I have CH and ice-picks/sunct whatever...my doc told me not to worry about an additional diagnosis but to try indocin (an NSAID)...

There are headaches which present themselves similar to CH yet are way shorter in duration and that are responsive to different meds.....

Check these out....

Welcome, I hope you find out what kind of headaches you have. I do have clusters, I am NOT cronic. I cannot spell eposodic!! Anyway, I have  2 children and about one to two weeks after giving birth I had some of my worst CH and had to stop breast feeding. It didn't help to stop but if I was going to try any meds I had to stop breast feeding. Anyway that is my tale. Hope things are better for you soon.

hi there (I replied to your other post)
I agree you should do the quiz and check our Eric's links to see if it looks like you have cluster headaches.  Personally it doesnt sound like it to me (thank goodness for you if they're not!) - I cant relate to CH pain being described as stinging or itching, time period/frequencies dont sound like it either
Good luck with it all - such a pity to have your special baby time interferred with
Let us know how you get on with your researches  Smiley

PS for what its worth I have a friend who got terrible hits like clusters when she went on the pill, they stopped when she went off it.  Then 25 odd years later she got them back during menopause, she says feverfew ended that lot.  Nothing since - 10 years ago

Welcome, berriegirl and sorry you're here. My first CH episode was a week after bringing my newborn home. I agree that you need to see a neurologist and get a definitive diagnosis. I hope you get some answers and some relief. Pain free wishes to you.  Smiley

Definitely read all you can and find a really good neuro to give you a proper diagnosis.  Regardless of what type of HA you suffer, you need the treatment necessary to enjoy your life (and your new baby).

I'm a firm believer in the direct relationship between hormones and headaches.  I always suffered occasonional HA's with hormone fluctuations during my 20's and early 30's.

My first cluster episode began when I entered the wonderful state called "perimenopause."  Coincidence?  Maybe.  But I'm on the other side now and still suffering from CH.

Best of Luck!
