Sorry to all. I missed this forum and briefly introduced myself in the General area. Anyway, I'm from Missouri and Texas and my name is Jack. I'm 49 and have had clusters for 15 years or so. I live in Saudi with my wife and daughter who are used to my weird ways by now. The medical care here is either very good or just the opposite, depending on the doctor you find. I went through all the usual junk; "It's a sinus infection, take these antibiotics. Ooops, no. It must be dental issues, go to see the dentist. Ooops. Well it might be a brain tumor then. Lets do some CT scans." After more than a year a neurologist finally decided I had CH. When I asked him what we could do about it I just got a shrug. "No cure, just live with it." How depressing! Well, I've been "living with it" for longer than I care for but I guess it beats the alternative. I must say that this place is great. It's just nice to know that there are other people living with this same beast and if they can live through it then so can I. I hope that some of my own experiences can help someone or, if nothing else, I can crack jokes until they get better. Last of all and most importantly, great to meet all of you. Jack

Hi Jack, its nice to meet you too! How old is your daughter? I have three kids, two boys and a girl. Bring your wife along to the board, she can get alot of advice and encouragement on how to deal with you in cycle too (as well as having fun and making some great friends!) Take care Helen

Thank you and good to meet someone on this side of the Atlantic! At least I don't have to stay up till some Godawful hour to chat w/ people. My daughter is a junior in highschool and will be 17 in March. This is an odd time for me as she is busy meeting boys as fast as possible. With her figure I'm not surprised but the guys are all part of the legions of satan as far as I am concerned. When she gets back from Thailand I'll get my wife involved in the boards. She has put up with this crap for years and ought to get some kind of good out of the deal. God knows I owe it to her, she's been right there with ice-packs and meds and trying to rub my head (not helpful but well-meant) steering me clear of obstacles when I'm doing my march around the house. All the things that someone with an 8 or 9 needs done. I've just put down a couple of cases of homemade wine and here comes the beast. What timing. Oh well, by the time I can drink it the wine will at least be aged a bit. All the best Jack

HI there! hey it's nice to know you are in my part of the world here! I am new here too, just signed up because my boyfriend has ch and I am trying to learn what I can about this so that I can elp in any way that I can. So far I have learned that when you are in pain you would rather not be touched. My concern was what to do when he is suffering because I feel so helpless watching him. anyway nice talking to you! E.

Good to hear from you but sorry to hear about the BF. There isn't a whole lot you can do but the few possible things are always appreciated. I can tell you a few things that work for me but can't say they'll help your BF. A lot of people with CH, me included, tend to sweat a LOT when we have an attack. I try to get wet and then let the water evaporate while standing in front of an air-conditioning vent or a fan. My wife is always there with ice-packs and lots of ice-water which I gulp down. Can you get immitrex where you are? It isn't available here but I suspect you have a bit better medical infrastructure where you are. All the best to you and the BF both. Jack

The sinus misdiagnosis is pretty common everywhere - happened to me also. I think it is natural that doctors look for common, treatable conditions first, and if there was some sinus inflammation, then hey, you've got a sinus infection! The doc is right that there is no cure, but there are a wide variety of treatments that help many people. There is a good chance that your pain can be greatly reduced by the right meds - it may take some trial and error to find what works for you, but don't take one doctor's word as infallible. Glad you found us, looking forward to some of those jokes you are threatening to tell.

| Yeah, what he said!!! Share the jokes please, theres a good boy! My daughter is only 10 bt my husband is already viewing all her male friends with deep suspicion.. And for my two cents worth I think that says alot more about you and my hubby than it does about the poor boys on the other end of the glares!! Home-made wine huh? I've broke windows with exploding corks playing that game before now too!! Take care Helen

Well, the sinus mis-diagnosis was a beast of a thing since certain antibiotics seem to be atrigger for me. Weird, yes? Since then I've been through most things, ergot alkaloids, antidepressants, tranqs, blood pressure meds, all kinds of junk. I've never tried Immitrex but have tried Immigran tablets and they seem to work OK although I am afraid of the darned things. Regards Jack

Well, daughters are God's punishment on a guy for having been a boy. A dad is constantly in fear that his little girl is going to meet someone just like he was at 18. It doesn't bear thinking about! As far as jokes go: What is the difference between a lesbian and a Wheat-Thin? (Digestive for you British folks) One is a snack cracker and the other is . . .*S* All the best Jack

Imigran/imitrex are the same drug. Here in Egland it is ALL called imigran regardless of whether it is tablets, nasal or injections. For me the tabs were worse than useless, the nasal sprays worked but took quite a long time and the injections were bang on the money taking effect in about 5 mins!

Wow! Gimme! We can't get the injectors in Saudi, just the pills. I wind up chewing two cafergots immediately and if that hasn't worked after an hour I eat one of the Immigran tabs. I'm worried it's going to give me a heart attack one of these days but it works and you know what it is like when it is way up there on the scale. I too like jokes where it is more a play on words or where the punch line is implied rather than stated. How about this one: A small gay guy was eating lunch in a Newcastle pub when three large black guys came in and ordered pints. After a while, (and several pints) the three guys went to the loo and the gay guy followed them in. Well, they were all stnding there in a line doing their thing, when the gay guy noticed that one of the black guys had a white penis. Considerably shocked, he stopped them as they were leaving. "Excuse me. I noticed that one of you has a member that doesn't match the rest of him. Out of professional interest I need to know. Was this a medical triumph after an accident? Was it a genetic aberration? Some kind of chemical accident? What?" The three black guys laughed. "You don't understand. We're all white but we're coal miners. Harry here just got married and he goes home for lunch." Regards Jack

You started it! Whats the difference between a rooster and a lawyer? A rooster clucks defiance... Whats the difference between a nun and a hooker in the bath? Ones got a soul full of hope.. Whats the difference between a magicians wand and a policemans truncheon (baton, nightstick)?? A magicians wand is used for cunning stunts...

Great ones. I'll have to pass those around. OK, what's the difference between a troupe of circus midgets and a women's track team? The midgets, of course, are cunning runts. . . . All the best Jack

Hello Jack, Welcome to the board- sorry you have to be here though. Here's something you said that worried me: on Nov 17th, 2004, 9:40am, Testy1 wrote:I wind up chewing two cafergots immediately and if that hasn't worked after an hour I eat one of the Immigran tabs. | To my knowledge ergotamine and tiptans don't mix well together and can cause serious side effects (heart attack maybe). I might be wrong and if so forgive me for alerting you for no good reason but please be careful. I'm sure a more knowledgeable member will be around shortly to clear things up. Again welcome. PFDAN to all, Perry.

You are quite right. The effects may be additive and that could be a very bad thing. On the other hand, what choices do I have? I've been through the spectrum of narcotics, blood-pressure meds, tranquilizers, sinus meds, and God knows what else between all of those. Truly, I thank you for the warning. You are absolutely correct but I really don't know what else to do. It scares me to death. Immigran tablets by themselves don't kill the beast and even cafergot occasionally fails when I'm at the peak of the cycle. I'm going to try getting a tank of O2 and see if that helps. I've tried most of the drugs mentioned on the board (except mushrooms) and they don't really help. Thanks again. Jack

I'm trully sorry you have to face such a dilemma. I wish i could offer an alternative but nothing comes to mind. I'm pretty confident more experienced sufferers than myself will be able to help. O2 is quite a reliable abortive for alot of people around here- it works for me most of the time- so it wouldn't hurt to try. Here are some non-script treatments that have helped some- hope that you'll have some success with them: http://www.clusterheadaches.org/resources/non_script_treat.htm I wish i could be of more help. PFDAN to all, Perry.

I'll be out tomorrow looking in the welding shops of Riyadh to find an O2 tank. I haven't given that one a good try yet. I did experiment with it a couple of months ago when my wife was in the hospital after surgery. They took her off the O2 but left the canula hooked up. Anyway, I got hit while visiting and put the thing on. It didn't work but then I didn't have a full face mask and probably got the flow-rate wrong as well. I'd give a lot to get rid of these damn pills. I hate the side effects and I'm scared to death all the time of what the long-term penalties might be. Thanks again, it was kind of you to notice and take the time to warn me. All the best. Jack
