I can't take this headache anymore

I just found this site and I can't say that I know what I'm trying to accomplish here.  I guess I just need to get stuff out.

I got a headache back in Feb. 2003 and it has yet to go away.  I've been to 5 specialists, a chiropractor, and for accupunture and nothing helps.  My headache is present everyday, although it does vary in severity.  I can't remember life without a headache.  I've tried Botox once and it didn't help.  I'm considering trying it again.

I can't take this anymore.  I go crazy at work, trying to function while in pain.  Once at home, I lay on the couch and do nothing.  I'm sick and tired of feeling sick and tired!!!  Nothing works, though.  I've tried probably about 2 dozen different meds and all they provide are horrible side effects.  I can't take it anymore, but I have no other option.  Nothing works!  I'm so frustrated and sad and it's consuming my life.  My husband gets upset that all I do is lay around the house, but he doesn't know what it's like.  No one does.  I feel alone and sorry for myself and I hate it.

Pippa,

Have you read some of the other areas on CH.com yet?  I'm new myself, and there is lots of good information here.

You mention that when you are at home that all you do is "lay on the couch and do nothing."  If that is the case, then it sounds to me like you have some form of headache other than Cluster.  Speaking for myself and from what I read most of the others here, if you are able to lay down during an attack, then you probably don't have CH.

Good luck finding some relief.

Thanks for your reply C.

I'm browsing the site now.  Laying down doesn't make the headache go away or even better for that matter.  The problem is that I've had it for 21 months straight.  I'm falling into this terrible funk because of it.

I've had several dianoses, with the last one being cluster headaches.  If anyone knew what it was, maybe I would be getting some relief right now, but they don't.  I'm willing to get advise from anywhere I can.

I can't give a diagnoses but I do not believe your headaches are cluster headaches.

On the left side of the screen is a 'headache links' button. Click it and scroll down to the 'Other headaches' section.

Pippa im sorry that you're suffering with headaches on a daily basis as im not a doctor I cannot comment on your headaches I know it may sound crazy but if you've taken lots of meds for your headache there is a very slight possibilty that you are suffering from rebound headaches, just a thought.......but a possibility none the less....hope you get some relief soon.

It's nice to see that people on this message board can diagnose a problem that 5 specialists cannot.  I went on here for support, someone to say, "hang in there" or "I know how you feel," but instead I can headache know-it-alls who feel it necessary to tell me that I don't belong in their little message board because I don't have cluster headaches.

Thanks so much for your care, compassion and support!  I sure am glad that I found this website!

Well in that case I think you need glasses 'cos you are seeing something I'm not. I saw people who cared enough to give you some good advice. Now if you can stop the pity party for long enough to look to your left you will see several buttons which just might help you. There is one about cluster traits which should help and a brilliant cluster quiz and as given above a link to an extremely useful website which will give you more of an idea of what you could be suffering.  If you have clusters we can all help with advice on meds etc but if you have a different type of headache the meds we would be using would not only be probably ineffective but potentially downright dangerous. Is that what you want?
I won't ever negate anyone elses pain.. we can all withstand different "levels of pain and what might be excruciating for me might be just uncomfortable for you.. we are all different.
I am truly sorry you are suffering, whether it is with clusters or migraines or inflamation of the imagination.
What I won't accept is you knocking people here who are trying to help just because you don't like their advice.
Try again. Have a look at the links recommended and come back and let us know how you get on. We want you to get the best help you can.
I hope you are pain free soon

First of all, I'd like for you to point out just where you saw the "caring" in the first two replies I received.  Secondly, I don't need people who don't know me saying that I'm having a pity party.  I went on this site for support, not for strangers to be mean.  Everyone who knows me compliments me on my ability to put my headache else where and carry-on with life.  I needed to vent to fellow sufferers and you do that?!?!  You are one nasty person.

My latest diagnosis is from a nuerologist who said that I have a form of chronic cluster headaches, and I have tried meds to treat that type of headache.  I don't think that he is giving me something life threatening.

Furthermore, to say that my headache is an inflamtion of my immagination proves my point.  You don't deserve to be on a site with people who are truly in pain.  Maybe it is you that doesn't know what chronic pain is, because if you did, you'd know that your approach was innappropriate.

Pippa- sweetie, sit down and take a deep breath. I'm sorry you are so miserable, ANY kind of constant headache can really wear you down. I think what some of the folks here were saying is that what you decribe does not sound like "typical" cluster headaches. If you've looked around the board you will find that many of us are not typical. I am a "chronic" which means I have shadow headaches and moderate "hits" everyday. When this happens it's hard to remember any pain free minutes one might have had. I am almost never "hit" at night (again-not typical). And it's true about rebound headaches- pain meds and triptans can cause them. Find a good neurologist, find good info here and on the OUCH site and perservere! You will find some relief someday.  hug

Pippa,

You have my deepest sympathy with the pain you are suffering from the headaches you have.  Everyone here who has CHs understands all about pain.

I absolutely was not being critical of you with my comments.  Was only offering advice that from what I know of my own CHs and what I have read of many of the others, which is that if you are able to lay your head down during an attack then you most likely do not have CHs.  If you truly have CHs, then the last thing in the world you would want to do during an attack would be to lay your head down.  As others have said, please read the information on the left.

I also am not "typical" in that mine occur only during the day, and I am able to sleep like a baby at night unlike many of the people I've seen on here.

I've only been on the site a couple of weeks, but everyone is very helpful and understands about pain.  I haven't seen that anyone is out to be mean or rude, but they also want you to get the help you need, and from the information you have posted it is highly unlikely to be CHs that you have.

Good luck in your search for help, but keep in mind that pity is not what you will find here.  Only people offering support and advice to the best of their ability.  Your own research and discussion with your chosen medical professional is the best course of action.

Take care,

Chris

This is the best description of cluster headaches that I've ever seen:

cluster headache:
http://www.hospital-doctor.co.uk/hd_news/hd_news_article.asp?ID=2498& ;Section=Feature

The puzzling thing about cluster headaches is that despite the very specific and distinctive symptoms, neurologists still have a hard time diagnosing it.

Pippa

I am sorry you are having such a miserable time and cannot imagine what it would be like to have a constant headache for so very long.
The simple fact is that Ch does NOT manifest itself as a constant pain, and anyone who diagnoses someone with a chronic daily unremitting headache as having CH is completely wrong. I'm not claiming to be a doctor here but the International Headache Society definition of Ch in no way fits your symptoms.

No-one here is trying to upset you when they say you don't have CH, it is vital you get the right diagnosis so you get the right treatment. Many of the CH preventives and abortives are quite heavy duty drugs and no-one here would want you to take them if you don't have CH.

Chronic Daily headache is actually a recognised condition. If you read the link below you may find something of use to discuss with a neurologist.

http://www.primarycarenet.org/cme/CME8.CFM

Hope this helps

Keeping a diary of the times, painlevel, and other info
can help you distinguish if you have more than one type of headache pain.

It is not un-heard of that you get migraines or cdh
with other types of headaches.

I guess everyone needs more info to understand you.

There have been days when I had a migraine at
say a level 4 all day long, and then had cluster attacks
that increased the pain for 40 - 50 minutes up
to levels 7 or 8... around 7am, noon, and 5pm...
for days and days at a time.....

so now i have to note duration of headaches and
location and pain level and what not.

Did you know there was a link about having CH
without pain?  I guess the related teary eye,
droopy lid and things have been documented
independantly from the pain, with one patient
having the droopy eye when he would normally have
the headaches.... and others who never had the pain,
could develop it....

Very strange in any case.
Keep seraching for a cure....
