Hi everyone, I'm new to clusterheadaches... I've only been getting them for about 6 months. I am now having another epsiode. Every night I get this intense non throbbing pain behind and above my eyes. I've been taking excedrin and ibuprofen and putting ice on my head, and then going to bed, but obviously this isn't cutting it. I always wake up with the same intense ache and then by midmorning I feel okay again. WHAT can I do? I have no medical insurance, and little money. Is there anything I can try before going to a clinic? Money is such an issue. But I cannot tolerate this pain.

Hi and welcome. Before you can really do anything you have to get a diagnosis. Is there a low cost clinic or teaching hospital in your area? If you have CH  the excedrin and ibuprofen won't help. The ice might provide some relief, but that's all. I couldn't really recommend anything else because a) most treatments require a prescription and b) you don't know with 100% certainty that you have CH. Good luck.

There is, but I don't want to go until it's absolutely the last resort. For one thing, I'm a 19 year old female. I went in before I got married and was on my parent's insurance, and she said sinusitis. Yeah, my nose gets clogged up or drippy when they come on, but sinus meds don't help. The headaches occur every night or every other night for about 4 weeks and then for about 3 weeks I'm okay. Then it happens again. Sometimes they don't last all night. Most of the time they do.

I am leery of seeing a reg doc or clinic because they have misdiagnosed me before on many things. Most importantly they have failed to teat my pms. I was told that the reason I have cramps only in my right leg, thigh, and back during menstruation is because of a deep clot in my upper leg. However, I have had this same pain from a bladder infection and when I had a kidney stone. I feel it must be a problem with my nervouse system. But some of the doctors I've seen don't even seem to believe I could possibly have this problem with my right leg. They all have told me, "I've never heard of that." I don't like hearing that from a doc. Esp when they don't give me any credibility afterwords.

What is the duration of an attack for you?  (Shortest, longest, average)

shortest is anywhere from 30-45 minutes and the longest is eight or nine hours. Average I guess would be 4 1/2 hours.

Take the cluster quiz on the botton to your left.  It is my hope that you do not have this monster.  This syndrome is often misdiagnosed because it is rare, but in order to obtain the right meds you'll need a proper diagnosis.

These headaches typically last from 30 minutes to two hours, but this can vary.  They often come at the same time each day or night.

Let us know the results of the quiz.

Good luck,

John

vkenworthy,
Hope all is well, more info please. Did ya take the test. How is your pain during the attack, in Kips please. Not surprised about the lack of sucess with the doc. Try to get a referral to a neurologist, this cost is worth the expense if you have CH. Personally I dont want to think about how much I have spent and charged. All well spent and would do it again. Still makin payment from the last episode, I would hock all for the removal or treatment when being attacked, no problem. If your pain is that intense, money is not the object. Cool
