headaches linked to carbon monoxide poisoning??

Hi all, I am new to this site, but I have looked all the places I know for any link that someone would know on Carbon Monoxide and headaches.  A little history...When I was 16 I almost died from carbon monoxide poisoning.  My family and I were traveling and  I was sleeping in the back of a van.  Hours later, we stopped at a gas station for treats and bathroom break - well when I was in the bathroom with my mom and my sister I passed out falling right on my right eyebrow bone.  I do remember looking up before I went completely out and I saw my sister on the toilet and watching her fall over. She came to right away, but I did not. I for some odd reason remember see them (watching from a short distance away) carry me out of the bathroom and I watched them put me on the sidewalk.  My dad kept trying to get me to breath, and I then had to have the ambulance bring me back.  I remember coming to and then I went out again, and I fell on the back of my head.  It was just a mess.  Well anyway I have had headaches ever since.  Only every since my 3rd son-who just turned 3 in Feb.- have I had them EVERY day.  That is no lie either...I have been going to doctors, neurologist, chiropracter, and so on...nothing seems to work.  I have been practicly drugging myself up and that isn't working either.  I am a stay at home mom of 3 boys, and I know that tension has a lot to do with it, but there are times when I can't even function AT ALL...I go to the ER at least 3 to 4 times a year. I try to fight it on my own so when I go to the ER it is because I just can't take it anymore.  My question is, has anyone else experience carbon monoxide poisoning and then started to have headaches.  I do know a friend of my dads, who isn't much older than I, who had  carbon monoxide poisoning and he now also has them.  That is what made me think to try a place like this where EVERYONE suffers from headaches off all kinds.  Thank you for your responses in advance.  I look forward to hearing from you.  Jackie

Almost everyone that has cluster's share's a couple common traits with othere's, but there is no single shared trait that well all have.
Some people get them after accidents and perhaps even situations like yours... But we still can't tell if that's what might have caused it.
Research shows that it is caused by extra grey matter around the hypothalamus (in a nut shell)...
So who know's really?
Birth defect?
Something that develops? And if so what causes it?
All questions unanswered so far.

Some doctors have speculated that carbon monoxide from cigarette smoke may be an aggravating factor in cluster headaches. A common pattern for episodic sufferers is to get them at night, and it is also linked to sleep apnea where oxygen levels drop (maybe as many as 3/4 of us have apnea).   Also, more than one of us report that they can head off or reduce a headache by running or excercising vigorously if they do so at the first sign of a headache (bringing more oxygen into circulation).

The carbon monoxide poisoning incident you mention could be a factor, not sure.  The carbon monoxide you inhaled as a child is long gone, but it could have changed something in your body.  As an analogy, people who get heat stroke once are usually more sensitive to getting heatstroke again, it could be the same way with carbon monoxide.  Your cellular metabolism might be a notch lower because of the exposure years ago - but just speculating on that.

One therapy used for both clusters and CO poisoning is oxygen therapy.  Most of us have an oxygen tank that will stop a given cluster headache, but not stop the cycle.  Some research suggests that hyperbaric oxygen can stop a cycle of cluster headaches.   Unfortunately, most insurance will not pay for hyperbaric for chronic headaches, though it will cover hyperbaric for acute CO poisoning.

Cluster headaches are rather unusual headaches and advice for them may or may not make sense for other types.  Do you think you might have cluster headaches?

Thank you for your input, that is very intersting-i used to work in a dealership and every single time they would move cars around in the showroom i would get instant headaches.  same goes for snowmobiling and things like that, any kind of exhaust i get instant headaches.  I am going to ask my doctor about the oxygen thing though, and trying to excercise when i feel it is coming on bad...but usually i am so afraid to do anything because of the pounding.  thanks again, jackie
