Hey I am new here and just started my getting the devil in my head. It was Friday evening after dinner and I was sitting in the living room with my wife and our 5yo son talking and all of a sudden it hit me. I got this knife piercing pain in the left temple area of my head. It hurt so bad i grabbed my head and started screaming. It scared my wife and son but also scared me. It wouldnt go away. My wife called the doctor and he said go to the E.R. now. I went and had a CT scan done and also a spinal tap. Both came back normal. They consulted with a neuro doc and my doc and was diagnosed with cluster headaches. Well what now. Tehy gave me some vicodine for the weekend and told me to go see my doc this week. Well it has been two days now and i have had about 8 attacks. WOW it hurts. The vicodine takes the edge off so i can sleep untill the attack stops. There is no pattern to them and i am getting them at all times during the day but the worst ones are in the evening. Waht can i expect now. I wish someone could give me some answers the docs say that they dont much about the clusters. Someone please help me and give me some answers.

Is this your very first cycle with cluster headaches ? I've never heard of anyone getting diagnosed with Clusters so fast. WOW. If you do have clusters and this is your first cycle, you need to read a ton of info here. There are many options available to both, abort & prevent Clusters. Welcome !

Ditto what Blue said... read what you find here on these boards. And do not become too attached to the Vicodine! Welcome... and best of luck... Lobstah

Vicodin = Acetaminophen And Hydrocodone. Pain killers do not work for cluster headaches. You said ‘they’ gave you the vicodin. I say ‘they’ don’t know one thing about cluster headaches. You said The vicodin takes the edge off so i can sleep untill the attack stops. Clusters sufferers can not sleep while under attack. It is impossible. This is only my opinion, I am not a doctor. You do not have cluster headaches. Sorry you are hurting and hope you find relief soon. Please let us know. It may help someone else that comes here with questions.

I got diagnosed my first cycle by my family doc... But back then a cluster diagnosis just meant "Welcome to Hell", since there wasn't really any effective knowledge base on treatment yet. The comment on "sleeping through the headache" is inconsistent with clusters. Is that what you meant to say? You can sleep with a headache?

How long do the attacks last? Are you able to sleep withouth the vicodin?

Hi, I don't feel convinced that you have CH either, let's hope not. Hope you get a definite diagnosis soon. I'm a newbie of a few days to the site and reading through some more of the posts I'm getting pretty angry with my doctors who for over 30 years gave me no help with the pain. They tried plenty of preventative methods which were totally ineffective (Sanomigran and various beta-blockers) but never any kind of pain relief to even try to help. Just advice to take my usual pain-killers. During my most recent episode I was so ill I sent for the doctor and he was shocked at the state of me. He gave me an injection of Pethadine and that was the first time I'd ever had any kind of pain relief from a GP. It still didn't kill the pain but it was a bit of relief. Then he ordered some oxygen for me but it came with no mask. The mask took 5 days to arrive by which time the episode was on its way out. I tried using the oxygen for the milder attacks as the episode was subsiding and I think it did help but not sure if the pain was fading anyway. I didn't feel as if the mask was right and as I have nothing to compare it with I'm not sure what help it's going to be next time....

Hi, this is my first time on here; my partner was just diagnosed with cluster headaches today and I wanted to find out as much as I could about them. It started off with a migraine, nearly two weeks ago and he's just had headache after headache ever since. He's been given painkillers but I don't think they're doing any good. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to them except he'll wake up on a morning alright but then after a few hours driving it will come back.Or he'll be ok all day then it will come back on a night and he can't do anything but go to bed. The pain doesn't seem to be localised though but he says it's like a tight band around his head. Does this sound like cluster headaches ?

| It does not sound like CH to me. Sounds like tension or maybe a migraine variant. You will probably get more response by starting your own thread... Chris

I agree - you sure were diagnosed fast! But the doctors who diagnosed you obviously don't know "diddly" about CH, or you would have been given something other than narcotics. With regard to Bob's comment, I think it probably is possible that the Vicodin might help "take the edge off" and let you sleep, but probably only because the cluster is waning already. Narcotics certainly don't help during the midst of an attack, but they will help you sleep when it's almost over. Read up - keep a written HA journal - print out info to take to your doc regarding meds, O2, etc. and keep us informed. Hugs and best wishes, Kris

| Doesn't seem like clusters to me. But, head pain is hell, regardless. Keep researching and stick around if you need some support. There's a lot of info on this board. Best Wishes, Kris
