Newbie...AND I THOUGH MIGRAINES WERE BAD!

I'm a 55 yr old female with a history of migraines. Menopause took care of that. BUT NOW THIS! Six weeks ago, I woke up with a droopy eyelid and a hell of a headache. After a week of this nonsense, I went to the dr. and was given antibiotics for a "sinus infection". WRONG! Didn't do a damn thing. Went back and was given a different antibiotic. WRONG AGAIN! I can not believe this is happening to me. Pain every day and I'm afraid to go to bed at night. I had one headache that took my breath away. I thought I was dying. I took Imitrex once a long time ago and felt like I was drowning???? Dr. said stop taking it. What other med can I take that isn't in the imitrex family? I would really appreciate your help, Carolann

Oxygen is your best bet to start with. See the link on the left for what you will need from the dr and how to use it. There is also DHE shots and migranol nasal spray. That is all that comes to mind at this time. Welcome to the boards and sorry that you are here. I suffer from migraines to. When I had my hysterectomy it slowed them down considerably.

| There are other triptans... Some folks cannot tolerate imitrex, but do fine with the others. Additionally, unless you have risks that would not allow you to use imitrex, it might be worth another shot. I know of no faster triptan than the imitrex injection. Chris

Yeah, imitrex is very uncomfortable at first. It took a while for me to get used to it, and for it to work for me. But once you get used to it, it's a life saver!

I can't use imitrex due to the fact that it causes some pretty nasty cardio symptoms for me. But I do use Amerge with some degree of success. Just like Prense said, all the triptans are different and if one doesn't work or causes bad side effects, it doesn't mean they will all be that way. However, if you have cardiovascular problems, it is a different situation... Good luck and sorry you have this... Lizzie

Welcome to the board. Sorry you're suffering.....but glad you found us. There are several meds available. Definitely you need to get the 02. You might check out the posts on Melatonin. I am episodic.....went 197 days PF due to a Prednisone taper. On day 198....I awoke at 4:30 a.m. to a CH that was tolerable.....but none the less...they were back! I started on the Melatonin with 3mg. Had to increase to 4 1/2 mg. It has worked wonders for me. I have had no ha's and no shadows since I started the Melatonin. It doesn't work for everyone...but for sure it's inexpensive and you don't need a rx. Tons of info on this site.....read till you can't keep your eyes open anymore. Lots of home remedies and ideas that work for alot of folks here. PF vibes to you.....hope you find what you need to get some relief. Jean
