Hemicrania Continua

It looks like HC is what I have!  Neuro put me on Indomethacin a couple days ago and I have been headache free since then!! Grin  The Indo messes with your stomach but it is a small price to pay for a clear head.  Have not been PF since last November so it is a big day for me.

Thanks for all the info on this site and the help provided.

I'm going to continue to read and occasionally comment if I have anything relevant to say.

Thanks to all of you!!!

Drink a glass of milk or eat before you take the pill and then it shouldn't be as bad.  It coats the stomach.  Then follow with a full 8 oz of  fluid.

Congrates on finding what it is and what works.

What is Hemicrania Continua?

Hemicrania continua is a rare form of chronic headache marked by continuous pain on one side of the face that varies in severity. Superimposed on the continuous but fluctuating pain are occasional attacks of more severe pain. Symptoms fall into two main categories: autonomic, including runny nose, tearing, eye redness, eye discomfort, sweating, and swollen and drooping eyelids; and migraine-like, including nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. The disorder has two forms: continuous, with daily headaches, and remitting, where headaches may occur for as long as 6 months and are followed by a pain-free period of weeks to months until they recur. Most patients experience attacks of increased pain three to five times per 24-hour cycle. This disorder is more common in women than in men. Physical exertion and alcohol use may increase the severity of headache pain in some patients. The cause of this disorder is unknown.

Sounds familiar doesn't it. For all of you that can nap during a cluster PF days are around the corner.

Sean,

The fact that I could "sleep" a headache away was what caused me to go back to the Neuro and argue for Indomethacin.  I realized that you can't "sleep" a cluster away from the descriptions on this site.

I never would have even heard of Hemicrania Continua until I came to this site and did some research.  I may not have Clusters but the Cluster site certainly gave me the info I needed to get "fixed".

I'll hang around and support and help where I can.

Glad to hear some good news.  Besides taking the meds with food or milk, you may want to ask your doc about adding an antacid to the mix.  I took Indomethacin up to 300mg.  My doc had me taking OTC Zantac with it to avoid the stomach problems.

Sean,
Thanx for that info. That hitting right down the middle of my skull Smiley
I'm still hoping I have Synalgia, but either way, the Neur/ seems to have narrowed it to these two.

6 days PF with the Indomethacin.  Almost starting to believe it's going to work!! Shocked

If there's even a remote chance that you could have either type of Hemicrania, run, don't walk to your doctor and demand an Indomethacin trial.  If it clears your HA up you're waaaaaaay ahead, and if not you haven't lost anything other than time.

For some doctors, I think responsiveness to indomethacin is a factor in the diagnosis of ch.  It probably should be for all doctors.  It was one of the first meds tried by my first 2 neurologists.  It would sure cut out on a lot of time wasted chasing expensive and possibly dangerous medicinal treatments.  I still correspond with someone whose doctors dove right into the ch stuff and didn't try the indomethacin until it was suggested here first.  Low and behold, the indo knocked out the attacks.  Last I heard, she was still doing great on the indo.  Just another item to add to the "Education" column of things to do for OUCH.

Since Indo is pretty much 100% effective in treating HC, I think all Clusterheads should try it just to be sure..
