Please don't hijack this thread...I really am curious! 1. Do you get shadows? 2. If so, how do you define them/what criteria makes a shadow, etc? 3. Are you episodic or chronic? 4. If you were to rate your shadows on a scale of 1-10 (the normal ole scale - let's just put clusters at a solid 10 here), then where do they fall? 5. Do they come and go, or are they constant between hits? 6. Do they ever replace hits entirely at times when you would normally get an attack? I may think of more questions but that's it for now! Thanks! It makes me curious because I have that New Daily Persistent Headache/Chronic Daily Migraine which sometimes can seem like constant shadowing between hits...dunno though. Thomas's idea in another thread about having 3 headache types is what made me think of asking these questions. Lizzie2/Carrie

I used to think I just got a lot of regular headaches... but in aug 2004 when i foundthis site, I realized I was writting off anything lower than a level 4 as a "normal" headache....even though it was the same, one-sided pain with the stuffy nostril problem....only my eye wouldn't swell shut.... Since Aug 2004 1. Yes, I get shadows. 2. I call them a shadow when I don't scream in agony, when they are in the same place I would have had a "hit" and when they come and go off and on through out the day....they don't really linger....although they can be so frequent that I would have only a ten minute break between shadows...for 5 or 6 hours.... 3. I was episodic, might be chronic if this cycle lasts until Sept 2005. 4. Level 2 or 3....just obthersome enough to haunt me, not so painful I scream or cry....or bang my head. 5. They come and go 6. Yes. There have been times I should have gotten a monster one...and only get the miniture version. (Thank God for the small favors, right?) With shadows, I can live They hurt not so bad, but i still get tired and heavy headed all day long from them.

1. Do you get shadows? Yes 2. If so, how do you define them/what criteria makes a shadow, etc? Constant nagging pain along the trigeminal nerve. 3. Are you episodic or chronic? Episodic 4. If you were to rate your shadows on a scale of 1-10 (the normal ole scale - let's just put clusters at a solid 10 here), then where do they fall? 3-6 5. Do they come and go, or are they constant between hits? Come and go. 6. Do they ever replace hits entirely at times when you would normally get an attack? No never.

1. Do you get shadows? Yes 2. If so, how do you define them/what criteria makes a shadow, etc? I define them as "duller than a hit. If a hit is a sword quickly being pushed through my eye and temple, a shadow is more like someone slowly shoving a baseball behind my eye. I can shadow up to a k6...after that, it's a hit 3. Are you episodic or chronic? chronic 4. If you were to rate your shadows on a scale of 1-10 (the normal ole scale - let's just put clusters at a solid 10 here), then where do they fall? See # 2 5. Do they come and go, or are they constant between hits? Both. I can shadow for hours, or get a break between them 6. Do they ever replace hits entirely at times when you would normally get an attack? no edited to add: I can lay down during a shadow, even a k6. I lay with something ( like a pillow) smashed securely into my temple and eye. If it's a bad one I shift my weight so the pressure is stronger against my head.

1. Yes 2. Constant, niggling pressure/pain in my left temple (cluster side). 3. Episodic 4. At a 3-4, sometimes a little higher when I'm at the peak of cycle. They tend to taper down as near the end. 5. Pretty constant except right after I've taken an Imitrex hit for a Kip 10. 6. No - though when nearing the end of the cycle, they tend to ramp up higher during those times. By that time, I can usually push them back with a strong cup of coffee. Kris

1. Only when it is sunny out. 2. Little black silhouettes that follow me around. 3. I am episodic. I am not sure about the shadow. 4. They never fall. They are always down to begin with. 5. When I go inside, they wait outside. (I think). 6. My shadow got run over once. Didn't seem to faze it one bit.

1. Do you get shadows? Yes 2. If so, how do you define them/what criteria makes a shadow, etc? It's the dull pain, chemical burn in my brain in between attacks. 3. Are you episodic or chronic? Episodic 4. If you were to rate your shadows on a scale of 1-10 (the normal ole scale - let's just put clusters at a solid 10 here), then where do they fall? 1-3 but it's a different pain than an attack 5. Do they come and go, or are they constant between hits? Fairly constant except after an attack and taking a vasoconstrictor 6. Do they ever replace hits entirely at times when you would normally get an attack? No

Different kinds....the heavy pressure that builds that seems like a hit is gonna come. The burning feeling that runs up the nerve. When my friendly cluster lump needs a rubbing..... criteria: 80% or higher across 2 consecutive days or 3 seperate therapists...it depends on the goal 3. Are you episodic or chronic? turned chronic in March yet I do get what appears to be cycles within...Periods of more frequent hits then just back to heavy shadowing and 2 or 3 hits.....Sometimes it seems I'm getting Whacked more often then others....have had several of these "within cycles" throughout the year. I also had 2 seperate periods where I thought the cycle was ending...in late July and in late October....Went a bout a week PF.....then WHACK!! Who the hell knows it's just another label I have recieved....kinda like STUD 4. Though it appears that I am finally developing somewhat of a pattern, this cycle for the most part has been all over the place.......I do however get some where it seems that a major slamming is going to come but never does...Weird! 1. Do you get shadows? Yes 2. If so, how do you define them/what criteria makes a shadow, etc? Pressure and/or slight dull pain behind eye. Eye burning, maybe watering, maybe nose block but not full blown CH. 3. Are you episodic or chronic? I don't know anymore. 4. If you were to rate your shadows on a scale of 1-10 (the normal ole scale - let's just put clusters at a solid 10 here), then where do they fall? I don't rate them. I can't. 5. Do they come and go, or are they constant between hits? Come and go. Frequency varies. 6. Do they ever replace hits entirely at times when you would normally get an attack? Yes.

How do y'all remember all the questions? 1. yes i get shadows- 2. they're like precursors of full blown CH-burning of eye and face, crunchy neck, big ol' lump on the back of my neck-what's that about, what non-clusterheads would call a bad headache. 3. episodic 4. between 3-6 5. they used to come and go but this cycle they are almost continous 6. no they never replace hits.

1. Do you get shadows? Yes 2. If so, how do you define them/what criteria makes a shadow, etc? Low kip, CH-like pain. Like a baby-CH that never reaches adulthood but stays with me longer than a full blown CH would. 3. Are you episodic or chronic? Chronic 4. If you were to rate your shadows on a scale of 1-10 (the normal ole scale - let's just put clusters at a solid 10 here), then where do they fall? 1-3 5. Do they come and go, or are they constant between hits? They come and go- they used to be constant when i was using Imitrex more often. 6. Do they ever replace hits entirely at times when you would normally get an attack? Yes, when i'm having a good day. PFDAN to all, Perry.

Guess I'll answer my own poll on May 19th, 2005, 5:40pm, Lizzie2 wrote: 1. Do you get shadows? yes 2. If so, how do you define them/what criteria makes a shadow, etc? For me, they are like cluster symptoms without the pain - eye tearing, eyelid drooping, nasal congestion on the side I'd be getting hit if it were a full out attack...but I say "without the pain" because I have the chronic daily migraine, so the shadows never escalate above that - I may consider them at least to have some pain if I wasn't already living with a daily headache type. 3. Are you episodic or chronic? Chronic since November of last year 4. If you were to rate your shadows on a scale of 1-10 (the normal ole scale - let's just put clusters at a solid 10 here), then where do they fall? Less than a 5-6, which is baseline (on a good day - on the normal ole' pain scale) for my chronic daily migraine - can't say what I'd rate them without having that underlying pain all the time. 5. Do they come and go, or are they constant between hits? The cluster symptoms when not having an attack come and go for me. 6. Do they ever replace hits entirely at times when you would normally get an attack? Sometimes they do replace an attack entirely for me. I might wake up at 4am - still waking up from a sound sleep, but I just have the watery eye and nasal congestion - no cluster attack. It's a weird phenomenon. Lizzie2/Carrie |

Yes I get shadows I am Chronic I define it as a brick wall with a Jack hammer trying to get in at my temple; I call it my JACK. It affects my neck, my teeth, my ear, my temple, my eye, and the top of my head it feel like a constant jack hammering feeling that just keeps on going. Its on a constant scale of 1 to 4. They last anywhere from 10 min to whenever. Imitrex helps if it get to much.

1. Do you get shadows? Yes 2. If so, how do you define them/what criteria makes a shadow, etc? I just recently found out that this headache I am having constantly is a shadow. RS hurts behind eye, temple, teeth and ear. 3. Are you episodic or chronic? Have been chronic since October 2004. Only my 2nd year with CHs. 4. If you were to rate your shadows on a scale of 1-10 (the normal ole scale - let's just put clusters at a solid 10 here), then where do they fall? 3-6 5. Do they come and go, or are they constant between hits? Since March they have been daily. 6. Do they ever replace hits entirely at times when you would normally get an attack? Yes, I have had shadows constantly where before it was the full blown thing on a regular basis.

1. yes 2. I consider it a shadow when the beast is perched behind my eye producing pressure but bot really pain (as in sharp). It will often get stronger and then let up off and on throughout the day. Sometimes I barely notice it at all, other times it's like a nagging ache. 3. chronic 4. 1-5 5. They come and go, but I have them probably 80% of the time overall 6. no (since I posted this less than an hour ago the discomfort has ramped up... still what I would call a shadow but on it's way to a fullblown visit from the beast if it continues as usual. Right now my eye is beginning to feel "bulgy", my ear feels plugged up, and I notice that I keep stretching my neck as though if I could just find the right position "it" would go away. As it progresses I become agitated, looking for things to do, moving around the house, restless. This is the first anticipated full-blown hit in over a week. It's kind of like awaiting a big storm. The clouds roll in, the winds pick up, the first sprinkles......then there goes the roof. weather as CH metaphor. Anyway, thought a from shadow to hit progression might interest you.) Kim I may think of more questions but that's it for now! Thanks! It makes me curious because I have that New Daily Persistent Headache/Chronic Daily Migraine which sometimes can seem like constant shadowing between hits...dunno though. Thomas's idea in another thread about having 3 headache types is what made me think of asking these questions. Lizzie2/Carrie
1. Do you get shadows? Yes. 2. If so, how do you define them/what criteria makes a shadow, etc? A shadow for me is exactly like a "stalled" cluster that levels off at a 2 or 3 and never progresses to stabbing eye pain. 3. Are you episodic or chronic? Chronic but under control with meds with only infrequent attacks, usually triggered. 4. If you were to rate your shadows on a scale of 1-10 (the normal ole scale - let's just put clusters at a solid 10 here), then where do they fall? 2-3 but it doesn't seem right to put them on the scale. 5. Do they come and go, or are they constant between hits? They ARE a hit but they can last all day. 6. Do they ever replace hits entirely at times when you would normally get an attack? No, in addition to "normal" attacks, unfortunately not instead of them. Here's something funny: my new PCP has MIGRAINES!

| Sheesh - I shoulda used this as the title to my honors project...now that would have caught some attention! Good to see ya back, T_H_B. Looks like I'm the only one who doesn't find shadows to be painful - or at least not MORE painful than the baseline of my chronic daily headache. I just find the associated symptoms to be very annoying. Interesting, though. Thanks to all who replied! Lizzie
