I touched my eyelid

It was 4:10 am when my husband saw a light on in our 19 year old sons room, so he rolled over and said Honey didnt you see Tyler when he came in last night. It woke me up and as I was explainging to him why our son was up so early it happened. I TOUCHED MY EYELID. Instantly a sharp dagger when through my right eye. I didnt do it intentionally, I just cant remember to keep my hands away from my face when I am trying to wake up. This has happened so many times that my husband is always afraid to wake me up. He did it this morning because he was concerned for our son. Afterwards he felt awful. Ive told him it isnt his fault but he still feels guilty. Does anyone else trigger a CH this way and have you found a way to prevent your self from doing so. Most of my CH just attack when I am asleep and sometimes they just happen when I am awoke by something, but the ones that really make me mad are when I rub my eye and agitate it back to life.  Please give advice. Sonja

Hi Sonja,
I'm not really in a position to give advice and I'm certainly no doc, but what you mention reminds me a bit of some articles I've read about Trigeminal Neuralgia.  This is not to say that you don't also have CH, but CH is not typically activated by tactile sensations.

Here's a few articles about Trigeminal Neuralgia:

http://www.achenet.org/articles/18.php

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/disorders/trigeminal_neuralgia/trigeminal_neura lgia.htm

http://www.headaches.org/consumer/topicsheets/trigeminalneuralgia.html

And here's a few about Cluster Headaches:

http://www.hospital-doctor.co.uk/hd_news/hd_news_article.asp?ID=2498& ;Section=Feature

http://www.headaches.org/consumer/topicsheets/clusterheadache.html

http://www.emedicine.com/EMERG/topic229.htm

The treatments for each are different.

Orbital Myositis. An unusual condition called orbital myositis, which produces swelling of the muscles around the eye, may mimic symptoms of cluster headache. This condition should be considered in patients who have unusual symptoms such as protrusion of the eyeball, painful eye movements, or pain that does not dissipate within three hours.
