Just got back from the neuro.......

Just got back from the neuro....... Well, I just got back from my first trip to the neurologist. It was a woman I saw. And after talking to me, looking into my eyes, making me walk a straight line, touching my finger to my nose, etc… She concluded (or best guessed) that I am her second female patient with cluster headaches. Damnit. My first headache was 4/5/05 and the last one I got was this morning. She prescribed Imitrex nasal spray to take when one hits and Verapamil to take daily for prevention. She said that they generally occur around the equinox or time change. Although she ordered an MRI for me she thinks that it’s clusters. I have to make an appointment Monday to be scheduled for an MRI and have a second visit to her in 3 weeks. They gave me a list of foods to avoid including caffeine, chocolate, fermented bread and stuff, yeasty stuff, etc. She told me to quit my Red Bull addiction cold turkey for at least a month. ;( I’m a girl! I’m 20! I have no history of headaches in my family! Why me?!?!?! I don’t know how I’ll deal with this. Thank you for this outlet of help and information. ~Bris~

I personally would advise against giving up the rd bull cold turkey. You are loking at some major rebound headaches. A gradual tapering off would be easier. Just my personal, unsolicited but experienced opinion. Hope everything else works. Did she suggest O2? Kim

While she did mention O2, she also said come back in 3 weeks and we'll see whats going on. I'm worried about the Imitrex. I don't take to nasal sprays real well.

DO NOT DO ANYTHING COLD TURKEY!! You will get massive caffiene withdrawl HA. I satrted going to NECH and Dr. Sheftell wants me to start fading out caffiene...but...because do I drink close to 1.5 pots a day. We are systematically fading......1.5 >>1.25>>1>>.75 etc until I can get to be like Joe America and drink 2-3. Also don't wait and see as far as O2...go call your doc and say you want that now. It should be a priority as much as her giving you a triptan even used more if ya can.....no side effects really except maybe a dry mouth. AS far as the trex...could ask for injections over the spray. What dosage of verapamil? and did she give ya a roid to use as a transitional therapy while verapamil builds? Talk to her again but at least sh e is closer on target then many of us experience at first. Hang in there!!!! E

Cold turkey of a good healthy caffeine diet, and then Verapemil on top of that will certainly dry up your digestion REAL good. Better go for some prunes and a serious mix of salads and bran flakes or it's gonna hurt. Oh, ehh, well CH 'hurts', this other would just be a long slow bothersome afternoon, maybe. Just a suggestion...

| I've had these for yrs my friends but am a relative newbie to meds too.....only been this yr out of 10 Ok 80mg X how many or how often???? not once a day? too low if your blood pressure and heart are fine.... unless the doctor's plan is to increase towards 480+ Something like prednisone used while your preventative is increasing to a therapeutic level Triptans are the class of medications : Imitrex, Zomig, Relpax, Frova, Amerge..... Cool Website!!! Read and try to become more knowledgable then the docs so you can take control and get your pseudo boy-toy to help you get a hold of some Oxygen and someone here can help with the regulator probably if you ask for some help. Hang in there Red bull E 2

| Why ask why?...theres no answer. Focus on managing your pain, find what works for you and what triggers your head....then ask "why" Ive been asking why for 30 yrs and still have not got an answer that satisfies me. .......................jonny

Just a FYI post-gravelgirl, the name that you sign off with, "bris", is the name of the Jewish ceremony when a male infant is circumcised!

| Yeah I know.... My name is Bristol and I don't like using my full name. Bris is fine and I prefer it. Surprisingly most people don't know what a bris is or at least don't make the connection.

| Have to disagree with you there hammer, nasal works for me 9 out of 10. Timing is crucial though. But of course still prefer the O2 when at home. Hang in there Bris, we all do!

Ditto - nasal Imitrex spray aborts for my husband 99.9% of the time. Overuse does cause more attacks though. Overuse for Mike is more than once a day. Twice a day will cause him probably double the attacks he would normally get.
