Curious:  How physically active is everyone?

I've got it in my head that physical activity, or lack thereof, might play a small role in our little CH lives.  So, how active are you folks?  Afraid to go first?  Ok, I'll do it.  I used to be very active.  This past year (and during this CH series), however, I'd classify myself as down right sedintary.  I engage in almost no cardio at all lately.  No need for the exucses, just the result.

So, let's keep score and see if there might be a pattern:

IMHO, staying busy is my way to avoid shadows/attacks.
I'm on the move all day every day but not necessarily straining myself. I'm on my feet doing something like working on the hot rod, doing yard work and chasing the grandkids.
It's the relaxing in the La-Z-Boy and/or napping that I try to avoid.
I think staying busy, both mind and body, helps me.

Morning,

Active?  What's that about?  Whilst going through an attack I might go for a wander in the fresh air but more than likely I take a shot and rock back and forth waiting for it to go.  In between attacks I try to get out but because my BP gets low I'm not really up too much!  Today I've made a real coffee!  Woo hoo, watch her go - points 1.

Take it easy and on your own level

I'm relatively active from about 3-4 a.m. till about 9-10 at night. This past week I've taken care of an ex-husband getting over surgery, a hyper 3 year old grandson with a bug, a son and daughter-in-law who just don't feel good.

I don't get out and do sit-ups, but I'm constantly doing something (a lot of it at my desk, but I'm up and down there also).

My HAs usually wake me up in the morning, so sleeping late is not an option.

Ok, I'm being as clear as mud.  By "active" I mean are you getting regular exercise (three or more times a week for periods lasting more than twenty mintues (cardio exercise))?  I don't mean to ask what you are doing during an attack.  I've read studies in the past about good exercise habits and improved quality of sleep, release of endorphens, and other physiological changes in the brain.  I'm making a wild guess, but I'm wondering if an exercise routine might provide some relief from CH attacks (perhaps lessen them or not as intense).  If most of us here are not getting enough exercise, as I suspect, this might be something that warrants further inquiry.  Since the medical world doesn't seem to be chomping at the bit to figure these damn CHs out, we need to keep searching for solutions.  Its been a long time since I took advanced research methods or stats, but it seems the first place to start on this silly notion of mine is to see if there is a pattern.  Now, I've tainted the inquiry, but lets see where we are with the exercise.  Of course, if you enjoy taking handfuls of pills that only sometimes work.....

Since I've entered this cycle I haven't done much, but to be fair it did hit me a couple of weeks after recovering from pneumonia so I was just starting to get my strength back.  Normally I get to the gym 2-3 times a week and (now the the weather is cooperating) mountain bike 2 times a week.  I tend to get my attacks in the evening so I'm wearing of going to the gym after work.  I did go biking last weekend so that was good.  I view it like a month in jail, I'm just trying to do my time and then get on with my life.

There are a number of threads on this subject. What you will see is that there is a similar cross section to that which exists in the general population and a sedentary lifestyle doesn't seem to be
an altogether relevant correlary.

There was recently some discussion about whether exercise helps with the beast but the general consensus seems to be that while it may help someone's "spirit" and sense of resilience to face the beast, that it isn't a direct line correlation to having shorter cycles or less severe headaches.

That being said, i'm an exercise junkie. I run marathons, I swim, I ride my bike to work when I can, I kayak. i'm in better shape at 42 than I was at 25. And, I still get clusters right on schedule 1 or 2 cycles a year. I peaked at kip 9+ this past cycle. So, all the exercise is not a deterrent for me. It does, however, put me in better shape to weather a cycle and enjoy being out of cycle. When in cycle however, prolonged cardio exercise is my most feared trigger. Go figure.

I work out four to five times a week two hours at the gym with weights and cardio. Plus in the spring/summer I am walking and biking too. That never deterred CH for me. When in cycle I can barely move sometime and all the gains I made in the gym go down the crapper....sigh....

running, or aerobic excercise does wonders for my shadows but weight lifting can trigger an attack.

And I'm the exact opposite... 60 to 90 min after a cardio workout I'd get an additional attack.  No problem with weights.  I still get regular CH no matter what I do or don't do...

I'm pretty active.
I begin the day with 20-minute fitonics workout.
I walk fast for an hour and 20 minutes each day.
And I do a 20-minute pilates workout in the evening.

No correlation to working out and CH's for me. Wether I'm sitting, running, or standing on my head, a Cluster appears when it wants. Just doesn't matter.

I don't intentionaly exercise, but If I wasn't active at work I would go hungry. I might walk 8 to 10 miles in an average day. I use a spike maul regularly, nothing easy about that, so I would say I am an active person.

I normally hit the weights 4 times a week and jog 3 times a week but when a cycle hits, my excerise routine is compromised because of sheer exhaustion from the CH's.

I'm in the middle of a cycle right now so I haven't been jogging in about 2 weeks.  Still hitting the weights 3 or 4 times a week.

Last time I played golf, about 6 years ago I got hit on the 9th hole and bailed out to my O2 and Imitrex. Their I am laying the front seat of my pickup snorting O2 and pulling my pants down to to a trex jab and my boss and best customer walk up, They think they are helping me out right. I caught up with them at the end of #10 and finished the round, It was about 98 deg that day and very humid. All of sudden my boss started treating me like a freak, my best customer went elsewhere, lost that job 6 mo later.

I don't do much exercise anymore; I just got alienated over it.

De_Minimis, to comment directly on your theory  ...

I do think that regular physical activity can be one first line of defense.  So yes, you are on to something.  But like every other significant prophylactic measure (e.g., Verapamil, Prednisone...), it helps for some people during some cycles, but does not help for all people and does not help in all cycles.

When I was younger, I found that that regular aerobic exercise could cut down some CH cycles.  But I have also found that it doesn't always work.

On the other hand, I am one of those people where weight lifting or other vigorous exercise during a cycle works better than O2 as an abortive.  But for others, weight lifting and O2 do not help.
