I was talking to one of my friend’s last night about cluster headaches. She asked me whether I had any signs or suffered from other neurological disorders prior to my first cluster attack. I found that to be an interesting question and something I never thought about. That’s when I remembered that I did suffer a lot from vertigo the year or so before my first attack. Vertigo is not supposed to be a common occurrence, but for me it was almost a weekly occurence the months before my first cluster attack, and then I never had vertigo again. By the way, I was never treated for the Vertigo. The doctors told my mom I just had to “wait it out”, even when they knew it was happening quite often. The worst part was the pulling down or sideways feeling and the hearing problem…hearing every noise practically rushing at me. Also, can someone explain to me how vertigo and clusters correlate, if at all?? I don’t think they do really, but at least in my case it could’ve been a sign of something worse to come with me neurologically, especially if I was suffering from it so much prior to my first attack. For no other reason than curiosity, I’d like to know whether anyone else had similar experiences; not necessarily Vertigo. Langa

I have had them so long its really hard to say what signs I have had. The only one was at night that I remember, being congested and not be able to sleep. Sorry not much help there. As far as vertigo goes I do get it now from time to time but thats from all the drugs. The sleep aide drugs really do that to you.

I had no signs...or symptoms. I used to take alot of Ibuprofen....probably 8-12 a day before I was lucky enough to get CH. I fish 9 months out of the year....it's extremely hot in Texas in the summertime. If I took the Ibuprofen, the heat didn't affect me as much as it did if I didn't take it. I also had alot of just plain ole headaches before CH. You know...like sinus ha's. Took the Ibuprofen for them suckers too. Funny....since CH....I dont have those piddly ha's anymore. Wish I had those piddly ones back....instead of CH! Jean

Langa - I don't think I had any signs prior to getting my first CH. A long time ago (18+ years or so) but I recall it like it was yesterday -- I went home from work and was napping and then it hit out of the blue ... no rhyme, no reason other than the nap ... My normal pattern is the dreaded night time hits ... T.

The jury is out on that one... currently, I'm out of cycle (thank goodness) but when I'm in cycle... I'm not sure if it helps or not ... from time to time I've thought it might even make it worse -- I suspect it keeps me asleep longer than would normally be the case when one is coming on -- as we all know --- timing is the critical factor in terms of what actions we take to abort -- a few minutes can mean the differance between a 15 minute kip 4 or 5 vs a 3 hour kip 8 or 9 ...

I was in a very serious auto accident (suffering a c-6 fracture /broken neck) prior to my headaches. The first headache came while I wasstill in the hospital a week or so after having a spinal tap.. At that time I was diagnosed as having a Spinal Headache .. that lasted for several weeks and I wasn't bother again for a couple of years.. The next time the headaches started up, I was diagnosed as having migraines.. The headaches started coming more often and more servere after that. Over the next few years I saw several doctors and made numerous trips to the ER before I was diagnose with CH in 1984 by Dr. Baird, an ER Doctor. And until, trex came along, I spent many years running to the ER, banging my head and Praying that I die.. Lady Luv..

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

I posted on the 'What's your story' thread and was looking for one like this. I wondered if anyone else had a medical history with diagnoses that might lead to these HA. I was diagosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse (leaky heart valve) with Dysautonomia (dysfunction of the Autonomic Nervous System) about 25 years ago. I also have a history of silent or mini migraines....no pain ever with these. If you have had Vertigo, you might want to check out this site and consider being tested. http://www.mvprolapse.com/dysautonomia.html

I have absolutely no history of vertigo, head injury, etc. prior to the onset of ECH. The only thing I blame them on is perimenopause (since mine started at the age of 42). Of course, everything bad that has ever happened to me in the last 10 years I blame on perimenopause or menopause. No help here - sorry! Kris

Had a bad experience with frozen shoulder after surgery which put a lot of strain on my neck.. Therapy for 6 months of torcher took three people trying to stretch my arm. One to hold the scapula from winging out another to hold the shoulder down so it wouldn't shrug up and the third to pull my arm across my body. Finally got a maniputlation done after being fed up with the doctor telling me it was my fault and got a second opinion. Also had sever tension Ha that felt at the base of my head working its way up my head and now here I am with clusters. Not remembering Vertigo though.

No signs, just whammo! Here is your Cluster Headache. It was different that first time though. Weirdest thing I think that has ever happened to me. Casey
