A quick question... now that clusters are associated with an abnormality in the hypothalamus, is there any definative answer as to the relationship between heavy drinking during OFF periods and the headache?

I really don't know if there's a definitive answer to that. I can tell you what most people here say. Most episodic CH sufferers can drink when not in cycle. It is a trigger when they are. Most chronics can drink anytime, except chronics like me, who have periods (I call them episodes for lack of a better term) when CH activity is more intense. Hope that helps. Welcome, by the way. Pain free wishes, nani

There won't be much anywhere, I don't believe, that indicates that heavy drinking, "on" or "off", is a very good idea for clusterheads or for those with a perfect hypothalamajingy.

Going on an 11 month cycle and won’t go near alcohol – it’s a major trigger for me. I was able to drink in the past during remission. Langa

I dont drink anymore, and looking back I think its because I learned I got HAs from it. I quit even before I was diagnosed.

| Hello.....30 years chronic and drinking has never triggered an attack....nothing has ever triggered one for me. Everyone is different, thats why this bitch is so hard to diagnose

Me either Jonny. I don't drink when I'm on meds heavy, but I even tried a couple of beers lately and they didn't trigger the CH. I think when I'm gonna get hit, I'm just gonna get hit. Chronic since 97. Hugs BD

Elsa, I don't think there is no relationship to drinking when NOT in cycle. I can drink all I want. Once a cycle starts, no drinks for me.

| I was in a 2 week cycle. I went out to a club after being couped up most of that time and I was having that "feeling" when you think youre really close to having a CH attack. Well, I succumbed to the peer pressure and drank a beer. I thought it'd surely incite an attack, but it actually made that uncomfortable feeling go away, and it made me feel better. I havent had a CH attack since then (Friday APril 2).

Drinking in cycle always triggered a hit and was not convinced drinking didn't perpetuate cycles for me. Call me a wimp, gave up the drinking and now have one less thing to blame it on and no more hangovers.

It is usually a drink that tells me a cycle has begun. I have half a small glass of beer and within 10 minutes I've got 'red eye' and have just got to go. Outside of cycle I am not a heavy or dependent drinker and enjoy a good social life. I keep fairly fit as well. ET.

Clusterheads are the biggest bunch of alcohol swillin', tobacco smokin', dope users in the population. Go to one convention and you'll know it's true! They'll give you all kind of rationalizations and say it's not true but don't believe them. Now for the relationship with ch. Hell if I know. Do know that some of the 5HT drugs are used to fight addiction. So my theory is that whatever is meesed up in our hypothingy that gives us the headaches, also gives us addictive personalities. http://www.clusterheadaches.org/library/general/lifestyle.htm

who assigned Bob to be our public relation's spokesperson? I want their ass in a sling. Bob is not supposed to refer to his constituents as "the biggest bunch of alcohol swillin', tobacco smokin', dope users" --- last time we hire a P.R. firm with a location right next to a topless bar. future references to the link between "heavy drinking" and clusterheadaches should always refer to being "neither able to confirm nor deny such a link exists." All references to "dope users" should always refer the reader to an alternate nefarious website where "dope users" can gather. All references "tobacco smokin" should make reference to the linkage between tobacco use and the dangers to unborn children, preferably using the canadian policy of inserting a skull and cross bones graphic.

here's one of the nastier pictures on our packages. http://archives.cnn.com/2002/HEALTH/01/09/canadian.cigarettes/index.html I hate the teeth one. I always ask for a different package if I get that one. Others include warnings about smoking around children (pic of a lil gaffer), smoking while pregnant (pic of a prego belly), lung cancer (pic of ..you guessed it.. cancerous lungs), and erectile dysfunction (that one's just text ). We can buy labels that fit right neatly over the governments scare tactic pics (that don't do diddly to influence smokers against smoking.) This would be more effective, but I doubt the gov't would go to the expense of installing .gifs on our smokes.
