Topic: Aircraft headaches (Read 428 times) |

Can anyone help me out with my fading memory here?
I know I have read of a headache condition similar to Ch which ONLY happens when the sufferer flies but at no other time.
I can't remember where I saw it, and can't find the link. Can anyone else help from their link archives??

Wendy, I think such headaches are caused by having a screaming baby behind you during a Trans-Atlantic flight! Seriously, he intoned, I've not heard of such a disease, but some people do get HAs while flying due to pressure change, rebreathing the same air for hours on end, drinking too much alcohol (dehydration) and anxiety about flying.

BTW this was a serious question! I have a person in the Uk who has been told he has CH but the attacks ONLY happen on planes and at no other time. I can't see how this can be CH, but I don't know what else to suggest to him.
Unless I am losing my marbles AGAIN there is a specific condition where this happens, I just can't remember where I read about it.

Right Wendy, it can't be CH and I have my doubts that the 3 cellars in your house are still well stocked!

Just to make you all feel very jealous, there is plenty of room, the wine racks alone in one cellar are 15 feet long and 6 feet high. I do my best to drink them dry and then pack my husband off with a very large car to France to fill them up again
There is also a snooker table, dart board and table football table down there
Honest, I tell truth!
Now about those headaches on aeroplanes...........

Thanks, you are a star. Sounds exactly right!
It has set me off on other of my rambling trains of thought though. I have always been able to tell that a storm is coming (even pre-CH) as I can feel the drop in Barometric pressure in my head (sort of pain but not as we know it!)
Wonder if there is a connection, are all Ch sufferers sensitive to pressure drops I wonder?

Headache is one of the most common symptoms of altitude sickness - probably due to oxygen desaturation.
The depressurization from a low pressure front (storm) is much less than from being in an airplane.
Sinus headaches are common among fliers, especially on ascent and descent ... but I don't think you are talking about that ... ?

I'll be flying soon (the first time on a "big" plane, and the first time since I've had CH) so I'm interested in the info too. I'm nervous about the affect it will have on my head.

Hello all. This is my first post on the forum. Ive been suffering CH attacks since 1997. Just got over my last attack two weeks ago. I can confirm that airplane trips can provoke a CH attack. Ive had a CH period that began with an airplane trip in 2000.

well before i was on medication or diagnosed properly i did get one of the worst CH attacks ever on a plane. the pain was so much sharper than usual. i mean it is sharp usually to the eye, but this was ridiculous. i mean i really wanted to die worse than any other time. especially since i had no pain killers or imitrex yet, or oxygen! i locked my self in the bathroom and pulled my hair and screamed into a pillow for 30 minutes until it faded. i didn't passed out but was so weak i just lied there on the floor crumpled up in a ball for the next 10 minutes. then went back to my seat and passed out. fun times

I've had some REALLY bad migraines during and after airplane travel. My doctor had me take 60 mgs. of prednisone a few days prior and the day of my flight before my last trip and I had NO problems. Of course, I had to do it for my return flight as well. I'm going to do this from now on. It seemed to make a big difference.

I feel pressure changes in my head, and prior to CH. I just flew not too long ago, got hit on the flight out, but not on the return flight. I really got hit hard after I got to my destination, but I don't think it was flight related. I could feel that one coming on all day.

I have to fly today ... I'm currently out of cycle and med free; however, my carry on will be stocked like a pharmacy with imitrex as an abortive. If I think back to the last couple of cycles, I had flown shortly before they began ... Wish me luck that the beast doesn't live at 35000 feet !!

Folks...please do NOT fly without trying prednisone first. Several days before and then the day of your trip. Another med to try is Dimonox (sp?)
