Am I a CH sufferrer?

Hi everyone, I'm a 24 year old male from Durban in South Africa. In August last year I had a bout of flu followed by a trip to Johannesburg which is quite a bit higher geographically than Durban and on returning and readjusting to the different climate I started suffering from a dull pain above my left eye, a couple nights later I was awoken by a much sharper and intense pain in the same area which lasted for about 2 hours, since then I almost every afternoon I get a dull, swelling pain that occurs just above my left eye, its a swelling pain resulting in my nasal passages being blocked up and my forehead on that side becomes sensitive to the touch. The pain is not as intense as some of the descriptions on this page and are usually either lived through or cured by a paracetamol (headache tablet). I've always assumed it was a sinus problem and I've been protagonise about going to a Ears Nose & Throat specialist as alot of people who I've spoken to have not been helped by surgical/medical procedures so to find out more I turned to our local medical website called Health24 on which somebody referred this site and was amazed by how many of the symptoms I shared, I very thankful my conditions isn't as intense as some of the other sufferers but I'm still unsure if I am indeed a CH sufferer, does anybody else suffer from milder symptons similar to mine or is mine a sinus related problem? Thanks for the informative site

Hi Durban Guy. If you look to the left of the message board there is a cluster quiz. That would be a good indicator for you. Read the information on cluster traits as well. It doesn't sound like CH to me, but I'm certainly not a doctor. I hope you find out that it isn't CH, but rather something passing that can be fixed up quickly for you. Carol

Thanks, I did do the quiz and found I had alot more in common with the second set of questions than the first hence my confusion. I'm just lucky not to suffer from the really intensive pain everything else is exactly the same

Welcome...... If you feel that you have the symptoms of cluster headaches, you really should make an appointment with a good neurologist who is familiar with this malady. These headaches do not always follow the same pattern, and the fact that yours are not as severe as some that you are reading about here does not mean that they will not intensify as time goes on. It would be very wise to read as much as you can find time to do and take pertinent information with you to your doctor.....it is best to be prepared with as much knowledge as you can so that you can discuss and ask questions. You may even educate your doctor about clusters. Keep in touch and let us know how you are doing. Good Luck

Quote:Peter Goadsby: Cluster headache is probably the worst pain that humans experience. I know that's quite a strong remark to make, but if you ask a cluster headache patient if they've had a worse experience, they'll universally say they haven't. |
| This is a good qualifier. If you can think of another type of pain that is worse than what you feel in your head, then you probably aren't experiencing Cluster Headaches.

| I agree, except that in the early stages for a lot of people the pain isn't nearly as bad as it gets later on, I know my first couple of cycles were very tame compared to ones that I had later on.

| DurbanGuy, your post gave me chills. Read everything you can find on clusters and educate yourself as much as possible. That really is your best defense in battle. Hopefully, someday, we'll be able to swoop in and pluck folks like you out of the path of that oncoming train. For now, though, all we can offer is combined knowledge and experience of how we all deal.

Hey man, when you're right, you're right! Like I always say, even a blind hog finds an acorn if he roots long enough! He is, afterall, a young male. Now if it were a female I'd say meegraines.

Hi, I agree with all of the above, which is probably very confusing to you. My first 2 cycles were very mild - in fact my first cycle consisted of a constant, but variied intensity shadow that lasted 10 weeks. It wasn't until my second cycle 4 years later that the HA's became more cyclic - could set your watch by them. See a neurologist. Maybe you do, or maybe you don't. We're not doctors, but the one thing we know is that we're all a little bit different. Keep reading and learning - and take what you learn to the doctor. Be your own advocate - it's the best advice I can offer. Many Hugs, Kris

| Yes agreed as well. This is a progressive disease for most part. I guess I was simply hopeing for the best for him, rather than the worst.

Unfortunately, we cannot tell if you are a cluster head or not. Best to get some tests done, like the M.R.I. and to make sure that any meds you do take are not used too frequently. I have only had this for about 6 years, and I remember the first year I got these pains, I wrote them off as sinus pains too.... when the sudafed and other pain meds stopped working, and when they came every few months instead of once or twice a year....that's when I started going to the doctor to see what was going on. Sometimes we are lucky, and only get the pains for a few weeks or months...and they disappear... some on here have claiomed to be painfree for five years or more....so good things can happen. But be prepared. If the pain gets more intense or more frequent, head to the doctors, ask about the oxygen solution....and steer clear of alcohol.... good luck.
