eye bulging

My worst experience with a bout of headaches sent me to an opthamologist and within one day I had seen 3 doctors and had MRI done on my neck and entire head. They said my eye was bulging 1 cm out of socket. Within 4 weeks my headaches were gone. Now at the break of spring they have returned with a vengence on the other side of my head. I do believe i am in remission now, but my other eye is once again bulging. I was wondering if i was the only one who suffered from double vision with these headaches. It feels as though the muscles that move my eye down no longer work. Does anyone else ever go through this?

Hi 45dolphin,

Double vision shows up just before a CH and generally doesn't disappear until about 30 minutes after it's over.

As for bulging eyes, I don't know...  no one ever mentioned it (maybe they're just being polite?)

Switching sides is not common but not uncommon either....

Hope you find some relief soon. There is a lot of information here that will help you get the best medical treatment and medications possible.

I've never had a bulging eye, but I have had a feeling of pressure in my eye and my eyelid droops-I have CCH, my left eyelid always droops now, more so when I am having an attack.  It is unusual for the pain to switch from one eye to another, but given that so little is really known about this illness, anything is possible.

First time I had a CAT scan was because the neuro wanted to make sure it was just the weeks of pain and not a tumor that was making my left eye bulge.  I don't know that it was really bulging as much as it was just held open more than the other was.  Never affected my vision.

I get the drooping eyelid and the whole side of my face seems to "hang" like it's going to slide off. It looks for all the world like Bell's Palsy. I haven't noticed any bulging of my eyeball, though. (other than feeling like something is trying to explode it out of the socket....)

The eyeball is probably the most vascular place in the entire body, except for the heart, though. My thought is that anything that is affecting the cardiovascular system as a whole, is bound to have an effect on the eyes.

I hope you gain some relief.... PFDAN's.

Sorry you're not feeling well. I am a chronic and my right eye droops a bit all the time now and when I'm fully fighting the beast it closes completely and the whole side of my face feels like it's being pulled down. My CH does occur on both sides of my face with tearing and a runny nose on the same side thats effected. And my eye feels like it's going to explode. Hope you get the relief you need. Lots of info on the left, and lots of caring people here to help in any way they can. Best wishes and I hope you're pain free soon.

My vision gets foggy, or dim (dark?) on the CH side just before a HA. Don't know if my eye bulges or not, but it does close completely. I have had a droopy right eye now for years and years. Now I know why. During a hit, my CH eye cannot tolerate any light, my non-CH eye is fine.

Last cycle, the CH switched sides about halfway through and stayed there til the end (~1.5 months). This was after 10 years of the same side. This cycle I am back to the original side. What's up with that?   Undecided

About the whole eye bulging thing, I've never heard of that being associated with CH.  However, it is associated with hyperthyroidism.  If you've lost a lot of weight recently or had other symptoms of hyperthyroidism, you may want to consider getting checked out.

My mother had hyperthyroidism and had the bulging eye. As the others said, this may be an area to investigate.

Ever since my first cycle, the eye on my HA side droops - more so during cycle, but actually I notice in pictures that it always droops a little now.  In effect, that means the eye on the opposite side seems to bulge a little because it's more open.  Considering that my temple on the affected side gets quite swollen and tender during cycle, I wouldn't be at all surprised if you have some swelling behind the affected eye, though.

I don't know if I have vision problems during a CHA, since mine always hit at night and my contacts are out.  I defer to those with 20/20 to answer that one.

Regardless, it's pretty scary unless you absolutely know it's part of your body's reaction to the beast.

Now that you've had all these tests, do they have a suggested cure for your bulging eye?

Hugs,

Kris

Hi,

Not wanting to feak you out but I had double vision when I first came down with CH AND MS.  Maybe you should ask for an MRI to be done.  I'm sure it won't turn out to be MS, it just shook me up a bit to read your mail.

All the best for you and a satisfactory conclusion

I'm thinking of you

MArta,
I'm not stalking you, promise....but as the beast approaches I tend to go into hyperdrive and was readin the thread about bulging eye as mine is feeling baout three times it's normal size.  Anyway say that you have MS.  I have had CH's for 20+ years but was doagnosed with Lupus about 10 years ago.  Have always wondered how many women with CH's may also have a RH disease. Curious.
