Way to go, Finland!  Independance Day is a great reason to celebrate and party.  I hope you enjoy your day, Sanna, and congrats.

No. But this day is still important to me. It has always been. I'm very patriotic woman and my years abroad make me even more a Finn. Smiley

My grandfather was fighting in wars back in 1939-1944 to make sure that Finland would also stay independent. Two of my great uncles passed away during those years. To us Finns independence isn't something to take for granted. Today we recall those men and women who lost their lives in battlefields and made this all possible.

Grand Duchy of Finland

During the Finnish War between Sweden and Russia, the four Estates of occupied Finland were assembled at the Diet of Porvoo on March 29, 1809 to pledge allegiance to Alexander I of Russia. Following the Swedish defeat in the war and the signing of the Treaty of Fredrikshamn on September 17, 1809, Finland became a true autonomous grand duchy as a part of the Russian Empire.
