When Animals Do What Humans Can't

My friend Michelle shared something with me this week that really got me.
Back in August she found this little black lab with a white stripe down its neck in the middle of nowhere. She brought it home and I wanted to keep her, but circumstances didn't allow. I wound up naming her Stinkerbell, or Stinker for short. She was a beautiful, smart and playful dog. Since it wasn't possible for me to keep her, Michelle found her a good home.

The people who took the dog in were country folk, and rehabbing an old John Deere tractor, so they named her JD. Well, they have kept Michelle up to date through emails and told her that JD is great with the kids and everything, but occasionally runs off. She was playing with some neighbor kids, but what no one knew was she had been visiting someone else.
It turns out one of the neighbors is a terminally ill man who only has months to live, and he spends just about all of his time in bed. No one has been able to get him up. However, JD has been visiting him, he has been getting up and taking her out for walks, and that lil dog has basically given him something to motivate him that others could not.
When JD's owners found out about this, they agreed to let the man keep her for the remainder of his days.

I just thought that was the coolest thing I have heard in a long time. I knew that dog was special.

Peace,
Carl D

There are organizations that take animals to old folks rest homes. It does wonders to brighten the days for those people, especially those with no family to visit.

I know of one hospital here in town that has small animals for the kids oncology section. I swear, if you watch closely, you can see the puppies and kittens smile just like the kids.
