What's wrong with my knee...?

Now when my head is fine, my knee hurts like hell... I have no idea what's wrong with my right knee. It has been aching mildly for a while when I walk down the stairs, but during the last few days I had to use the ellivator. My knee just hurted too much to walk down the three floors there are in my house. But that's not all. When I try to kneel down, it hurts. When I walk, it hurts. Not all the time, thank God, but after I have been sitting down for a while. I've seen enough docs for life with ch, but I suppose I must call uni docs tomorrow for appointment. Mum told me that when her right knee hurted in my age, she needed a major operation. And she slipped out something else as well: most of her sisters have had a knee operation of some sort. Great... Sanna

Just as a temporary measure, rub the sore part of your knee with an icepack. Do this especially right after any exercise where you might expect soreness afterwards. Sorry you're limping around, Sanna. A physical therapist can be helpful with ideas which could help you at least put off surgery.

A couple of questions: Does your knee 'pop'? Do you have family history of arthritis? If you answer yes to either of those, it could be arthritis setting in. If not, you may have laid on it wrong or something. try the ibuprofen, that may help. Peace, Carl

Hmm... I do have some ice in the freezer. I'll get some right now, thanks, Patti. I wasn't sure which was better, something cold or something warm. I'll go get the ice. And Carl, no arthritis in my family. And my knee doesn't pop. It looks like there's nothing wrong with it... I wish I could see something different in it, though. It would be so much easier... But I can show the doc where it hurts; I've locaded two spots which hurt. Thanks for the help, guys! Hopefully I'll be wiser tomorrow... Sanna

If it hurts to walk, and bend down, it could possibly be the ligaments that are on either side of your knee. Mine are loose, and they hurt sometimes, and it is hard to get up from a kneeling position sometimes. If I go hiking, and over do it, they will hurt for a few days. If it hurts under your kneecaps, you may be losing cartilage, but it sounds like the ligaments. An anti-inflammatory will help, such as ibuprofen, or aleve. An exercise my doc had me do, since I couldn't do knee bends, due to no cartilage, was to sit on the sofa, legs stretched out with my foot under my husband's thigh, then lift my knee. The knee doesn't come off the sofa, but it helps to tighten and strengthen the ligaments and muscles around the knee cap, and did help. Eventually, I'l need surgery to tighten the ligamets, but I've had this for years now, and it will be a long time before I have that done.

Ouch. My knee hurts a bit now and then... usually after lots of exertion but so far it hasn't lasted more than a day or two. 59 years old, of course. Everything creaks a bit. Charlie

Get an MRI. I was mad that I never got an MRI for all the years of knee pain and then had the avascular necrosis in later stages. My docs only ever did x-rays until last year for the knee pain! Hugz Carrie

I with you, Carrie. My back problems never showed up on X-ray either. It took an MRI to diagnose the trouble.

Maybe it's knee-monya But honestly you could have a slight tear in a ligament that flares up every now and then. X-Ray can show most bone related/arthritic conditions but an MRI would be needed to show more minor ligament damage. Tom

You know, mum said that her knee problems didn't show in X-rays, either. I'm going to remember that when I see the doc on Thursday. Totka, cool that you know some Finnish! Sanna
