Anyone have any idea why?

Dylan, my son, told me of something odd that has me boggled, and I hope someone might be able to shed some light on this.

Kids and I got snowed in at my Brothers place last night, and at bed time, Jeremiha gave Dylan a set of ear plugs because the furnace was loud and keeping him awake.

Dylans sinuses get very plugged at night too, (just as mine have since childhood) and it keeps him from falling alseep.  Anyway, Dyl said that once the earplugs were in, his sinuses opened up full wide for him and he was able to beathe well, and fell asleep in a matter of minutes.

WTF?  Is there any reasonable reason for this to happen?

Was it just a fluke?  I would think that the plugs would be more obstructive to the inner ear and the tube that helps the sinuses drain.  I'm so confused.... Undecided

Anyway...we are off to the Movies...I promised them Harry Potter tonight.

Great that the earplugs helped to keep the sinuses open.
I don't know why, but "the tube that helps the sinuses drain" is called the "Eustachian tube" and its only function is to equalize air pressure in the inner ear to the outside pressure.

Try the earplugs at home and see if it was a fluke or if it works again. Let me know - I might be trying it. You might be on to something.

Sorry, just had to interrupt here, but I couldn't help but laugh as my daughter Lily said she can breathe through her ears.  I told her she's flippin nuts, but now I think there might be some truth to it.... LOL

Wink

P.S. sorry Dyl has the ear probs. Sad  I went through the same thing when I was a kid.

Ueli is correct about the Eustachian tube. It is the thingy that "pops" when you clear your ears like during pressure changes while flying.
I see no connection with the sinuses.
I vote for fluke.

If she can then you’d better have her checked for a hole in her ear drum.

I had her hold her nose and blow (like what you do to relieve pressure while flying) to see if the air stops or if it leaks through, and she said her ears pop and the air stops, so I'm pretty sure it's not that. Wink

Eustachian tubes and babies.....one of the big nightmares of lots of kids are they can often have underdeveloped eustachian tubes, leading to improper drainage and a lot of ear infections.  I believe it's all inter-related via the pressures, but darned if I know for sure.  Aren't ear infections a nasty component of sinus infections?  Or is that just me?

At any rate...ENT...I would just say to think 2, 3, or maybe even 4 times before opting for surgeriese that fix tubes, drainage, and breathing systems.  LOL  I've had 4 ENT surgeries - starting with those eustachian tubes as a tiny infant.

Granted, the other 3 probably wouldn't have been necessary had I not gotten a tumor, but still...  3 surgeries later and my nose is not really a functional airway on the left side.

I go back to my ENT tomorrow morning (after working a 12 hour shift), and if he ever said he wanted to do more surgery to "fix" things - I might decline on the basis that these surgeries are extremely painful and haven't seemed to fix too much!  Although I do have less ear infections. Wink

Just my word of warning about ENT surgeries.  Ain't nothing normal in my head. Wink

They do a lot of little operations on babies because of these things. You're right. They add temporary tubes or something, I think.

They do way way too many operations on our sinuses. The ear and nose sawbones told me that from an old MRI, I have something like 25% usage of my left septum and that they could "fix" that. Really? Somehow after 59 years of blowing snot all over keyboards, I'm disinclined to have these ghouls bore holes in my head.  I really hate what these larcenous bashtards do to people. My cousin was a victim earlier this year. Useless and it's a very bloody operation.

First off...that's gross.   laugh

You're right....very very evil surgery.  Honest to God, I don't think I'd ever been in as much pain as I was when I woke up from that surgery.  If there'd have been a way, I would have slit my throat.  OMG never ever ever ever ever again.

Should I say those direct words when I go to  my ENT tomorrow morning?  hehe

I was lucky, I avoided those surgeries....I just had my ear drum pierce...fixed things up nice.

I don't recommend it though, it's rather painful and puss and blood drainage from an ear when you're 7 years old is kinda freaky.
