Just look at the percentage of the Oil and Gas royalties we receive compared to your state. One third of one percent of six billion dollars per year. That's what I've heard is what we get. That's is a load of crap. See what NM gets...see what TX gets... See what any othe state in the Union gets and tell me if it is less than LA. If we got an average of all the other States we could bond our way out of this mess....But no.... Fuck Louisiana!... Look around and see all of the bullshit pork that find its way into total crap...Geeeez!

We are a proud people. But this storm beat the living shit out of us so completely that we don't know where to start. But when we figure just where that is, we will begin there.

My apologies Steve. I did not mean to insult you or the State of Louisiana. We have been watching the TV news and the papers for the happenings/rescues/rebuilding of your area. To me and the others in my area the devastation is beyond belief.
I have no idea what my state receives in royalties but I'd bet it is small. That's why we have some of the highest gas/oil taxes in the country. It's a case of a small state population. Could be the same in LA. We have too few politicians to compete with the big states like California and Texas.

We just don't rate in the eyes of Washington and personally I am sick of this crap. What will it take for America to pay attention to what Louisiana means to the stability of the economy of the most powerful economy in the world?

Damn. I was going to watch the thing. I saw a little something like in on the PBS newscast. From where I sit, Louisiana is getting a very shitty end of the stick.
I like when one guy was asked what to do. He said "How about FEMA and company cleaning the shit out of the streets first?"

Nova showed how the storm took out the city despite the hurricane hitting to the east which lessened the storm surge. They showed how levees failed that weren't suppose to and how nothing could be done until the hurricane left. They also showed the complete devastation that happened in Mississippi which New Orleans missed completely. basically if the hurricane hit to the west the city would be gone.
Frontline, which was after showed the political mess that occurred. How the Louisiana National Guard were based in a flooded area, how the buses were also parked in a flood zone. They also showed how the FEMA director lied about the situation. The most important was that a year ago there was an exercise done which modeled exactly what happened, only nothing was planned because the Federal government pulled funding before it was finished. Basically everyone was to blame, from Bush down to the Mayor. The most telling thing is that FEMA's list of three worst disaster is Terrorist attack in NYC, Earthquake in California, and Hurricane in New Orleans.

I feel your pain. I can see and feel the disappointment you feel. Such devastation.....and it seems that nothing is being accomplished. I haven't been to your home town, but I have driven through many others....and it's as though the storm was yesterday. Homes completely destroyed by the fallen trees....roof tops still covered with plastic.....thousands and thousands of downed trees....and I see noone working to make it right.
Some of the Texas towns have been partially cleared and cleaned to an extent. Still alot of work to be done. But the Louisiana towns and cities seem to be as they were after the storm. I don't understand the politics of it all. For damn sure, it's not fair.
In past history, the Cajun population was well known for helping his neighbor....that's the way they got things done. You're correct about how proud this population was and still is. Surely it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that in the light of this total devastation....one neighbor simply cannot get an entire city back on it's feet. I wish I knew and understood "why"?
Guess the Gov't thinks that because the norm is one neighbor helping another....they don't need to get involved.
I missed the program....cause I didn't read your post till today. Wish I had read earlier....I would have taped it for you.
You and Lady Di are in my thoughts....always remember that. If I can help you in any way, just let me know. It's just a short drive for me....and it would be great to see your smiling face again. 
Try and stay the course, Steve....I know it's tough....but it'll be worth it in the end.

You know I've thought about some of what you said in your post. What makes New Orleans different with regard to the recovery? Coastal Mississippi was scrapped from the surface. Rita recovery seems to be moving along as you have said.
The only thing I can come up with is this. The Queen is dead and the corpse is in the room. We don't know what to do with her. I don't think anyone knows. Large parts of her are beginning to decay and the corpse is in the room.
Letting go is very difficult and sad.

Oh Steve, I'm so sorry for your personal loss, and for the loss of a great city like New Orleans. I've been to Louisiana a few times, not just to NO, but visited cities and towns all along the gulf coast. There was so much beauty and history there, and it is such a loss to everyone in this country to see that area devastated. I loved NO. It's history, it's culture, it's food, it's architecture, it's burial grounds, and of course, Bourbon Street. My second child was concieved in NO , so I do have some memories (but that's another story). For my two cents, from the highest office in our country, down to the mayor of NO, every government entity failed you. On behalf of all of those high muckty mucks, I offer you my apology. You and your neighbors deserve much much more than you have received.

For those not interested in Louisiana, or this thread, feel free to move on to the next. Because of the recent events that have affected Louisiana, and because it has affected the very lives and livelihood of Steve G and others in this family, I feel it necessary to try and understand and hopefully help them to do the same.
New Orleans is about Ports and Transportation. This Port is the largest in the United States. It is the very foundation of the entire American transport system. New Orleans is about the mighty Mississippi River. All or part of 31 States & 2 Canadian Provinces ...New York to the east..Montana to the west, contribute to flows in the lower river. Barges navigate the river...ships navigate the ocean. Barges upload to the ships, and vice versa. The Mississippi River flows south to one City....New Orleans. Ships can't navigate the river..it's too narrow to allow ships to pass one another...thus the need for the port. Upstream barges are unloaded, cargo stored, sold and reloaded on oceangoing vessels.
The city of New Orleans is located where it is because the United States has to have a city there. Without a city....the port is useless...and without a port, the river can't be used. It's a terrible place for a city to be located, but it's exactly where a city must exist.
Hurricane Katrina and the events following, have taken out the port...not by destroying the facilities, but by rendering the area uninhabited and potentially uninhabitable. The port has to have workers, and the workers have to have stores to buy food, clothing and the other necessities of life. There has to be hospitals and doctors for the sick....and schools for the children. The city of New Orleans will return, because it has too. Government or politicians have no choice. The Mississippi River cannot be relocated....and the ports are mandatory in order for goods to be shipped to other locations.
This is about the loss of a city's population and the paralysis of the largest port in the United States. The map is but proof of the massive affect the loss of this city and the port would have on those who live in the other 30 States and the 2 Canadian Provinces. It's about the mental toll this has taken on the good people of Louisiana and most importantly the residents of New Orleans and the areas adjacent.
Like it or not....there's no debate. It doesn't matter that New Orleans is geographically located in an area that's below sea level. New Orleans and the Mississippi River are a necessity to the U.S. There are no other optional routes that can handle the massive transport of goods that pass through this area.
The harvest is coming....and New Orleans will rise again.

Today I ended my day with a meeting at the Chateau Sonesta to make certain that the rebuild on Phase I would be completed on Dec. 1. The results of that meeting required that I have another with the adjuster and make certain that his estimate would not be exceeded by the scope of the roof repair in the Contractor's bid.
After that meeting I suggested that we knock down a few, he agreed, and we headed to the Absinthe (since 1807). We have become friends and I enjoy his company.
It was time to head back home and I knew, as I walked toward Canal Steet, it was later than I normally headed home and the traffic was going to be a pisser.
I came to Canal and a really long line of people were standing in the neutral ground (median). A 40' trailer was open at one end of the line. They were quite the blend and no one was left out.
They were getting Christmas trees, donated by who knows who. The cameras were dispatched and positioned so strategically.
I cried all the way back to my truck. The traffic was a pisser indeed.

For most of my life I've lived on the boarder of LA and now am a resident so I'm seeing the politics first hand now. Even in Shreveport it's affecting people. We have so many "evacuees" and our economy is being affecting by the hurricaine.
It seems everyone is still trying to place blame rather than help in restoring. There are hundreds working their rears off trying to get some order restored, but the "few" who are yelling the loudest (and getting the most press) are the ones wanting something without working for it.
