Quote:Coretha, a soft-spoken girl, acknowledged the punishment was humiliating but said it got her attention. "I won't talk back," she said quietly, hanging her head. |
| Humility can be sobering but some parents may go further, and there is a point to draw the line. The girl seems to be taking it well. I've witnessed much worse humility set out by a parent, getting the wrong results, hatefulness.

Hmmm... Interesting way to get a point across. My thoughts: Just having her Mom there next to her is humiliating to a 14 year old. Sometimes, a reality check is needed with teens. An example: My oldest son (now 32) got into some trouble with the law at 14. He was starting to drink and use drugs, too. Part of his "sentence" was community service. I told his probation officer that he had much more to offer society than picking up litter on the highway. I had him work the soup lines at one of the local homeless shelters. He had a chance to see what happens when you let drugs, alcohol, and impulsive behavior take over your common sense. He never got in trouble again. I've seen parents do worse, that's for sure. I'm not sure I'd go that far, but I think it may prove to be effective for this kid.

Sometimes the harsh realities of life must be made crystal clear to children, and this mom is taking her daughter's potential future seriously. Her willingness to be with her daughter during this punishment shows she stands behind and supports her. Mom gets a big Hooray from me. Failing to teach children that there are consequences to their behavior is why we have too many screwed up children becoming screwed up adults. It's called tough love - sometimes a little psychological kick in the pants is required. As far as bookworm/pampering whiners throwing out the ole "psychological damage" crap... They need to drift back into their fairy tail existences and leave those clearly taking responsibility for raising their children to become be competent adults alone. Tom

Tough one. Having a thing like this on national news is a shame. Firstly, it's not news and it will make anything remotely like it ineffective unless getting on TV is the goal. Charlie

We all 'learn from our mistakes' as part of nature and the learning process.....same with pain......sumthn hurts you don't do it anymore. But for some mistakes are too much fun and they get away with it. I think mistakes need to be painfully felt early on to set the pace. Sumtimes screwin up is looked at as cool in school Pam

How many times have we heard parents issuing idle threats....... "for the THIRD time, if you (fill in the blank) ONE more time, I WILL punish you".........with NO follow through? Somewhere, at some time, a child needs to know there are consequences for their actions. For me, this was not harsh.........just a bit late....... Just another person's opinion...... Cathi

A similar event happened to a student at one of the local high schools back in our home town in Iowa... The child was made to do a similar thing, but I believe the student in question was made to dress up as a clown and profess ( sign in hand out in front of the school before classes began) that he/she (can't remember which) was a class clown and the visual result was correction for the misbehavior in class. The point to all of that? Someone called the department of human services claiming that it was abusive to have done that.... I say, what? since when is public humiliation abusive to anyone but the perpetrator? Not to mention the fact that had the child (somewhere in the 16-18 yr range) committed an actual crime methinks the run in the newspaper about it would have been slightly more embarassing to the parents. Ya, it takes balls to do that to your own kid... but if it works where is the foul? Hooray I say... and make even worse for following offenses even. 'Bus
