Howdy. Went to get contacts today - tired of glasses.
Well, can't get them in...
Seems I have a very strong blink reflex.
I *really* want to wear them - cheaper than LASIK.
Anyone have any suggestions on this?

Be persistent. I think it's kinda normal at first to have a hard time. Eventually you'll be like me... I poke myself in the eye without blinking 
1. Contact lens on right hand index finger.
2. Hold down lower lid with rest of right hand.
3. Hold open upper lid with left hand.
4. Move index finger (right hand) towards eyeball.

I wore contacts from the age of 14 till I was 27. I ended up having dry eyes, and they would get so irritated I never put them in again. Now I find myself wondering if I could get away with wearing them again, but my vision is quite bad and I don't know if I want to go back to all the cleaning and disinfecting again. I had the gas permiable kind before, and am thinking about soft lenses this time.
What kind do you have Liz?

Two of the newest things are the new (more breathable) 'Night and Day' lenses and Daily Throwaways. I go for the Daily Throwaways. No solutions or buildup to irritate dry eyes. No cleaning or disinfecting just throw them away at the end of the day.
Mel, I guaran-damn-tee you that my vision is much worse than yours... much worse. I'm too embarrassed to say anything more about it.

it is a bit of a pain at first, but you'll get the hang of it.
When I first got contacts, and later relearned how to put a new kind in I would be in tears becuse I was sooo frustrated. As said above, it takes practice...a good week at least.

Steve, does insurance cover those kind nowdays? I know they didn't when I got my last pair. Are they real expensive?
I like the idea of the throw away kind, but I would only want them for when I go out in public, LOL.  I really don't mind wearing my glasses though, so maybe I'm just being silly with worrying about how others perceive me. I used to think I was a geek and no one would think I was pretty if I wore glasses, but I find that most men can see the beauty right through the lenses. Shouldn't matter anyway, I'm married.

your not alone !! My son took a month to get his in!! I had to put them in for him at 1st!! but he kept on trying & he found it easiest to set up just like eyes said & then he looks up & puts it in!! then he closes his eye & moves his eye around until it's in the right place!! works for him, try it!! it takes time to do something new & get it done!! Good luck sweety!! pray you get it soon!!

I never really had trouble putting them on, I've been wearing them since I was 15.
One important thing though... it FEELS better if the lense is generously wet right before you put it in your eye.
If you need to, get a mirror, put it on a flat surface and lean OVER the mirror so your face is parallel to it... this way as you're putting the lens in, it is evenly balanced on the tip of your finger and won't flex (as when you are standing straight up).
Like Dan said, look to the side if you have that fear of poking your eye, if there is enough liquid on the lens all you have to do is blink and then look straight ahead and it will settle on the middle of your eyeball.
Hope that helps some. Just keep trying!

Insurance? What's that, LOL. My employer 'helps' pay for them... sorta. $194 for 6 month supply. So, a year of contacts is still cheaper than my glasses. I don't see 20/20 with them, but that's because of my: bad eyes (not corrected for astigmatism)... and it's still better than wearing glasses... which are troublesome with my: bad eyes.
Expensive? Enough. And now you know why I still live in a shitty apartment, LOL
