And I thought I was anal!

I swear that Katie Couric is turning our lives into a living colon Hell with all her on-screen colonoscopy crap!

This year my darling hubby decided it was time.  He's mid 50's and has never had a health problem in his life.  Convinced his GP he really needed one, even though the GP told him he didn't - no symptoms, no family history, negative other tests, etc.  Got a referral to a specialist, but never consulted our insurance company before hand.  Now he's been scheduled for a procedure that our insurance company doesn't cover.  Period.  Minimum out of pocket will be close to $2,000.

Of course, I was the one who called the insurance company and found out.  Needless to say, my hubby won't be having a colonoscopy anytime soon!  Procedure cancelled.

I don't know who I'm more pissed at - him for scheduling it without checking with insurance - or insurance for not paying for it.

Sorry - just needed to vent.

Why ask for an ass fucking when the doc says you dont need one?

Edit to add: Do you really have insurance that wont cover that test?

It is up to YOU to educate yourself and then help your doctor plan your treatment. If you just sit down in front of your doctor and say "make me better" you are setting yourself up for a great deal of pain.

Hey, wait a minute.  A colonoscapy is strictly a exploratory procedure, right?  and how often do medical experts recommend people in their 50s get one of these?
Whatever you do, dont be pissed at the hubby.  Im sure that you can be plenty mad at the insurance and let him be.....for now.

I know you're right BMonee, but all the supposed "experts" say people over 50 should have one.  I guess my hubby is a typical victim of the media.

And you're also right - I'm no longer pissed off at him - only at an insurance company that doesn't believe in proper cancer screening.

Much calmer now .... Kris

Maybe, did your hubby mean he wanted a 'finger wave' test of his prostate to check for cancer and confuse it with a colonoscopy?
All men over 50 should have the prostate checked.

And your insurance sucks.

   Agree with all above.

I have NEVER heard of a health plan that would not cover this proceedure.  Even though your husband has no symptoms, no history....he is absolutely correct in thinking this is the right time for this.

Please let us know what medical Ins. Co. you have.
I...too....want to look into this.

Your insurance won't pay for it? WTF is that? It's one of the few things they seem delighted to pay for but then shoving stuff up my ass is their thing.

Supposedly, every 5 years after 50 is the deal.

For all those who are also pissed at my insurance company, it's Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO.

They will only pay a small percent of the bill because we've been so healthy this year and have not had to pay anything towards our deductible.  So we would have to meet the entire deductible plus 20% of the remaining bill.  Since our local hospital doesn't follow the practice of writing off whatever BCBS doesn't pay, that amount could be considerable.

According to BCBS, it doesn't matter if the colonoscopy is screening or diagnostic - the policy is the same regarding both.  I guess they'd rather pay for treatment than prevention, which pretty much sucks!

Usually they also have an "out of pocket" maximum....I hope you don't have to pay much for that insurance....at my job, that's the type of Health Insurance they give away for free. Sort of like Major Medical 80/20 w/$1000.00 deductible, $2,500.00 family.

You may also want to look into a "Health Care Spending Account...if your job offers it...you can sock money away (pre-tax) into it for these type of high cost precedures.
