Something I tapped out this morning...

Hurricane Wilma, Cozumel, 2005 World punished from its moorings Splintered by the battering sea and wind slamming down like the hammer of God. In the womb of the shelter, we were sealed like ancient Egyptians and slept as though we were drugged; each exhausted descent into the arms of Morpheus marked by hope of the nightmare's end. Awakening each time to the screaming howl of the beast, dripping water, and guttering candlelight. Emerging at last from the chrysalis: Rebirth into chaos, an unprecedented destruction, a great and terrible catastrophe -- a world of tangled girders and leafless shattered trees, ruined streets, and stripped stormblasted ruins of the town. Horror offset by the faint crackling voice of my wife on the cellphone, and new comaraderies forged in the wrath of of the hurricane. -Frank H. Weeden November 9th, 2005

Poignant images, Frank. You've captured images as well as feelings about the event. There's just something about poetry and art that convey images and feelings in a deeper way than prose. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Patti. There's so much more.. I'm still processing it all. (I can't wait to go back to Cozumel, either!) -Frank

Well, that whole experience is great fodder for creativity, so I'm glad you're writing about it. It will do you good to revisit the place at some point.

That was wonderful. My wife and I are hoping to make it to cozumel next summer for another dive trip. Maybe we'll see you there. (Just leave the bad weather somewhere else! ) I missed out on a night dive the last time, so I have something to look foward to now. Both resorts we like to stay at have been put out of business for several months, and the dive shop was trashed too. Brian

Great job, Frank. Glad to see you're back in the poetry mode. Cozumel still stands out as one of the most beautiful places I've ever been - for diving, shopping, dining, etc. To be in the midst of such destruction - I can't imagine. It will be back, and like you, I'll be going back also. Kris
