Congratulations Mel!

Now you can teach my daughters!  They wanna know how but I do not teach womanly skills. Roll Eyes

My Mother use to believe that all girls should know how to cook, sew and knit.  So I traded jobs with my brother that had a heart condition.  He can now cook, sew, crochet and knit and I can drive tractors, forklifts and work with tools.

I still think I got the better end of the deal Grin because if someone else don't cook we starve!

I'll place an order now:

3 hats, wide brimmed with daisies
1 beany
3 pairs of winter socks with toes
and a cozy for Bob Wink

Great job, Mel. Now.....put your pastime to good use:

Whenan ocean-going tanker goes down at sea, loosing crude oil into the ocean, the immediate and long-term effects on the environment are often catastrophic. Equally as dangerous is the illegal practice of passing ships' dumping fuel oil into the water rather than properly disposing of it in port. In the case of the "little penguins" (previously known as "fairy penguins"Wink All tuxed in. who live on Phillip Island near Melbourne, Australia, such accidents and illegal activities have threatened the entire population of penguins.

Cleaning the animals by hand with warm water and a mild detergent then returning them to their natural habitat has been found to be an effective means of dealing with the danger posed by oil spills, but there's a snag in the plan: Often the little penguins are far too ill to be bathed right away, and the scrubbing can be quite stressful. The solution is to slip the oil-coated birds into wool sweaters, which prevent them from preening themselves and possibly swallowing toxic petroleum-based oil as they regain needed strength, and keep them warm until their bodies are once again producing the natural oils (removed by the cleaning) necessary to their insulation.

Where does one get such penquin attire? Appeals are made to the knitting public to place their time, skill, and leftover yarn into the service of animals in need. A New Year's Day 2000 spill of 260 gallons of fuel oil off the southern tip of Australia prompted an appeal that resulted in piles of sweaters ("jumpers," in Australia) being sent to aid the damaged little birds, many crafted by the capable hands of American knitters.

To be better prepared for the next such environmental crisis, in 2001, the Tasmanian Conservation Trust and State Library ran the knit-for-a-penguin campaign. They hoped to build a stockpile of 100 sweaters. They got more than they bargained for.

The result originally had been an oversubscription of this entreaty for aid, with the appeal threatening to escalate into a "Sorceror's Apprentice" situation. One thousand sweaters have been received so far, with more arriving all the time. The organizers originally wanted to conclude this part of its Oil Spill Response Program, but then rethought that action, deciding to ask the knitting public for a further two thousand penguin sweaters.

So, knit away, if you've a mind to. But keep in mind it's almost impossible to disseminate the news that the need has been met once it has, as myriad appeals gone wrong (such as the Craig Shergold plea for get well cards) prove.

Good intentions pave the road to Hell. They could do it with sweaters.

As one wag put it, "As the library sent out patterns to knitters, the jumpers are all one size and pattern. But the penguins will have a choice of colour."

It's all true.

Thanks Cathi!  I have always thought it'd be cool knitting, but I thought it would be too hard.  If I would have known I'd catch on so fast, I would have done it sooner! Wink

Bob, omg, scary...

LMAO Jas!  Ya know, I can operate pretty much anything as long as someone shows me how to do it at least once. Wink  Tools?  Yup, got plenty of those and know how to use um.  Heaven forbid a man crosses a woman with a grinder and a pair of vice grips! Grin  I have never been a girly girl until I turned 30.  Don't know what happened. Undecided  All of a sudden I liked pink and was looking for stress free activities, LOL. laugh

That's awesome Mel!   Grin

So funny, just came back from the kitchen where a co-worker is knitting a scarf with the biggest tooks i've ever see.  They look like huge nails...but she said the smaller the thread, the bigger the tool?

My sister knits and crochets sweaters and all kinds of stuff. As far as I got was crocheting a blanket that could cover 3 city blocks when I was a teenager  Undecided

My mom just recently gave me her sewing machine as a gift...she's been using this sewing machine for over 40 years and it still works.  Now I need to find somewhere where I can go for sewing classes cause I have no clue how to use it... Tongue

I know we will have a pic of the final product right?  Wink

RJ- Good God, so far I tied off what I had (I wanna get some pretty color yarn) and made what my son thinks is a coaster for his sippy cup. Roll Eyes  Give me some time to make up little penguin clothes!

Langa- LMAO, 3 city blocks?  Wow.  I eventually want to make a bedspread.  Also, I too, have my mothers old sewing machine, but fortunately, she showed me how to use it when she was still alive.  It's a Singer she got from one of those vouchers you get from Publishers Clearing House.  Took her a year to pay it off, but she could sew anything. Smiley  As for a pic when I'm done (as soon as I begin, LOL) with the scarf, you betcha!  I am just proud as a peacock right now that I'm just gonna HAVE to brag! Wink

Awesome, Mel!  I never could get the hang of knitting - you know the old knit one, purl two garbage.  I always dropped my stitches!

My thing was crochet and macrame.  I crochted (sp?) baby blankets, baby capes with hoods, and Christmas stockings (which I still have and my daughters want even though over the years they have stretched into waaaay longer than kneesocks).  And, I used to make macrame plant hangers, (gave 'em as gifts  Grin), macrame wall hangings (owls mostly, with beads and everything).  Oh, and I also did needlepoint (but not well)

If you can't tell my now, I'm probably twice your age cause all this stuff was done while young and poor with two kids, and during the 70's (macrame was KING then)

Keep it up.  It's a worthwhile way to spend the quiet evenings.  Unfortunately, it's not like a bicycle - I have forgotten everything I ever knew.

Good start Mel!
With your talent it won't take you long to surpass a co-worker I once had. She was an engineer from Czechoslovakia who often came to work in knitted dresses, some sort of knee-length pullover. She was very proud of the fact she knitted them in one piece, including buttonholes, and only used needle and thread to sew on the buttons.
My sister could read a book while knitting.
So practice, practice, practice Smiley
