It is POURING in Portland!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My 8 yr old grandson isnt even sure he wants to go out trick-or-treating!!!!! We're making carmel apples.I cant imagine he will go thru the night unscathed by sugar! At any rate, the bowl is filled by the front door, and we are awaiting the arrival of the Halloween Ducks......aka, the kids who dont care about getting a littl wet. I was doing some reminiscing today. I think the biggest thing about Halloween when I was growing up was the guy down the block with the pomegranate tree! We hit HIS house first, every year, just in case the crop was small.....Mom and Dad got their picks from the goodie bags, and I got to eat pomegranates!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PFTwick or PFTweet, one and all! 30???? I'd be in shock...lovely, woozy, chocolatey shock, but shock nonetheless.... M&Ms here. Not the peanut kind, and in those silly "fun" sizes, but I give them a heaping handful. Chris

If 1 adventuresome child would make their way to our house to do some Trick-Or-treating, we would have to come up with something better than candy to make it worth their while. Since it would be our first Trick-Or-Treater ever, a $20 may be a good place to start. I guess it's a downfall of living in the sticks. When our children were younger we did Halloween parties with some neighbors every year. Held em' in our barn, set up a haunted walking trail through the woods, had haunted hay rides, and a huge bonfire. Often had 100 or more people at them. Children that attended had a ball, their parents had to man the haunted trails and enjoyed themselves as well. Haven't done one in a couple of years, we'll have to get these back on track. They were great. Tom

Trick-Or-Treaters To Be Subject To Random Bag Searches October 26, 2005 | Issue 41•43 WASHINGTON, DC—Responding to "a possible threat of terror and fright," Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff announced Monday that trick-or-treaters will be subject to random bag searches this Halloween season. Police prepare for a long and spooky night. "Individuals concealing their identities through clever disguise, and under cover of night, may attempt to use the unspecified threat of 'tricks' to extort 'treats' from unsuspecting victims," Chertoff said. "Such scare tactics may have been tolerated in the past, but they will not be allowed to continue this Halloween." While he would not elaborate on the specific threat, Chertoff said his office had "heard a couple spooky tales," and indicated that there was good reason to believe that Americans face "a very ghoulish scenario" this October. "We have done and will continue to do everything we can to protect citizens from those who would play on our fears," a haunted Chertoff said. "Nevertheless, Americans are advised to be in a state of readiness." National Guard troops and local police are being stationed at checkpoints in residential neighborhoods to seize the contents of any paper bags, pillowcases, plastic pumpkins, or other receptacles. Additionally, candy-sniffing dogs will be posted at regular intervals to locate and devour suspicious items. Local, county, and state officials have been placed on orange alert, with strict orders to confiscate and investigate bags containing Bit-O-Honey, Snickers, Baby Ruth, Twix, Butterfingers, Mr. Goodbar, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, gum, and any and all forms of taffy. Chertoff discusses possible perpetrators of Halloween mischief. Chertoff asked Washington citizens for their assistance, and he outlined steps that the average citizen should take to aid in the war on fright. The DHS guidelines encourage parents to report any suspicious neighbors who create potentially spooky yard displays, especially those that include candle-illuminated pumpkin faces, skeletons in windows or doorways, or repeating tape loops of werewolf howling. Chertoff recommended that law-enforcement authorities be granted sweeping new powers to ensure security, including mandatory street-corner identity checks for suspects wearing clothing designed to conceal facial features or otherwise obscure ready personal identification. Additionally, local police have been ordered to detain any individuals appearing to be ghosts, goblins, witches, or other characters designed to evoke fear. Critics of the warning say that the DHS is merely sowing seeds of unease for political reasons, pointing out that the organization has yet to present any real evidence of the threat. "This is yet another misguided and unfair example of profiling by our nation's law enforcement," said ACLU spokesperson Marilee McInnis. "It's doubtful that many G.I. Joes will be searched, but Aladdins, genies, and belly dancers should expect a huge crimp in their Halloween fun."

I bought the dark Hershey kisses just for my own treat this year. Since I just got back from moving a bunch of my mom's furniture, I decided to not do the Halloween thing this year for the first time in 8 years. So far, no goblins at the door. Hopefully, I won't look out in the morning and find my yard TP'd.

We only had about 20 kids here......we live in the sticks aka boonies too but the small neighborhood about a mile long stretch does it every year. One year someone told someone else about it and we ended up with about 100 STRANGERS. Was NOT prepared for that year ! I tried to get parent freindly treats this year (boreing).....candy cigarettes (snicker snicker) and gummy bones and some smarties and some bubble gum and startburst mixed in treats. And found a cute treat that is small bags of animal cookies. Not getting tons of choc bars helps me watch my waistline otherwise midnight craveing gooblins take over my body and I raid thru it leaveing nothin but heaps of empty wrappers as evidence in the morning and tighter pants the end of the week. (a big no no !!!)Well dam iit.....I found a few tootsie rolls in with the lot and grabbed three. Just busted half of one of my side teeth off and I now look like I should be out trick or treating as a dam hillbilly !!! Shit.....I jus wonder what THIS will cost. Pullin it comes to mind Pam

we don't really get anyone at our house or so the neighbors say I'm out with the kids.A church down the road from where I grew up does hayrides and things. They all park in a lit parking lot with relegious decorated trunks and pass out candy.then I go a little ways away to a housing complex where a lot of the kids I went to school with live.plenty of candy for the kids.WE visit my mother in law go out with my mom , sisters and nieces and then to my Grandmothers.the girls kept getting impatiant as I kept stoppping and talking with friends.April was a witch,Beth was a butterfly, one niece was cinderella, one a vampire and my 19 month old niece made the cutest lionb and not cowardly one either......They also do an assembley at school followed by a long parade through the neighborhood and classroom parties.our school discourages scary costumes and they have to come from a book and they carry their books during the parade.now I'm gonna raid, eat um check the girls candy.happy haunting Minnie *modified to add* the weather is great here for once.I had just a sweater on all night and got hot during the day with a long sleeve shirt. The lady bugs are coming out in force.by this weekend my porch should be covered by the damn thing.(no offence meant to our own ladybug on here) but when you get swarmed by them and they get on your clothes and in your house yuck.this time of year they have the tendency to bite little bugers....rant over...

I should have given out rain coats. We've had more rain in the last week than we had all summer. My shoes are still wet and my leather jacket is still at home because it soaked through. It rained so hard, my bones got wet.

I made up bags with 3 Musketeers, Sweettarts, BlowPops, Butterfingers, KitKat's and Reeces Peanut Butter Cups. I had more kids than expected this year, so I had to dig into the candy my kids brought home from Trick O' Treating on Sunday. Didn't matter really, they brought home a plastic Walmart bag full to the top with candy from last night.
