a couple or 3 acres in mid-Georgia, N.C., Tenn., west or south S.C. or somewhere remote, scenic, with room for a couple of beagle to run, but close to a big town so I can still drive to work. I'll build a little place when I get there. What's in your area? Send me the email address of your local newspaper if you see something affordable. Last year, mandatory evacuations 3 times in 6 weeks, this year once so far. And "they" say to expect at least a decade of this crap due to the oceans' warmer water right now. I'm a little tired of driving back home wondering if the place is still standing. The For Sale sign goes up within the next 2 weeks, unless I have to evacuate again. LOL. Thanks, kids. Donna H

I live near St. Louis, almost smack dab in the middle of the U.S. The only thing we get here are a few tornados in the summer and some snow in the winter, take the good with the bad. That's the facts of life! Beautiful in the spring and fall!

I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio and my children and I moved down here when I was 48. I know what it is to miss seasons and snow on Christmas Eve., to 60 mph winds at the bus stop waiting to go downtown to work numb and blue, the tulips, corcus, Lillies of the Valley and especially hills....yes I miss hills. Florida is so straight the kids get buried just rolling around in the sand. And, we've had red tide continuously now for about 9 months. The Gulf is dying. We actually have dead zones and about 40% of our coral reefs have been destroyed, in part from commercial fishing practices. Every year more and more Manatees, sharks and dolphins are dying. And now "they" want to drill for oil in the Gulf. Like they'd get enough oil from here to make a difference! Florida has some beautiful points, no doubt. The ocean, the water fowl, dolphins and a lot more, but I am sick and tired of boarding up windows, bringing in yard furniture, taking all the pots of flowers and lawn ornaments in and packing it all in my living room. Filling the car with your most valuable papers and pictures, two animal crates, cat and dog, gallons of water, food etc, etc. We had a hurricane every other week last year for 6 weekends. My little beagle gets nervous every time I take a box or two to my car. She thinks she's going to live in her "room" (cage) again for a couple of days and listen to the thunder and rain. She's now very scared of storms. I got her tranquilizers from the vet just before the last big storm. He said give her a whole pill, 25 mg. Just about 1 mg. per her body weight is correct, says he. About half an hour after giving her one, her back legs got tied up in a knot and she looked like her eyes were looking up and opposite of each other. Her tongue was hanging out and she finally couldn't even walk so she just flopped down on the floor looking at me like......help me! I phoned the vets office and was told that she wasn't crossed eyed. It was just that second eye lid (Like I was supposed to know dogs have eyes like snakes!) was half covering her eye as she was over sedated. Duh! Next time just give her half, says he. Just before this last hurricane, I gave her 1/4 of one and she was loopey. Never again. Anyway, if I could move about 10 hours north of here where I could have a basement against tornados, I'd be one happy woman.

You couldn't get near a house of almost 1900 sf down here for less than $250,000.00. The cost of homes and lots have in some cases doubled this past year. Now, we're waiting for the reverse to happen. There's a mobile home across the street from me that they bought several years ago for $30,000.00 on a very small lot. They sold it two weeks ago for $90,000.00 Unbelievable. Check out the prices here in the Sarasota area and see for yourselves.

Dave and Annette need to sell their home - you need to move out of hurricane central. Seems a perfect solution to me. A definate change in scenery! I like where I live... northern ILlinois. All we have to worry about is tornadoes.........and not very often. Hope you can really find a perfect place for you - and actually move there.

I fell in love with north and south Carolina when we headed down to Myrtle Beach last year twice. Got some freinds that moved south to NC close to Ashlyville in the mountains (my house/pet/kennel sitter actually) and they love it but seems now days they get some of the crappy weather or so it looks on the weather map with alot or rain and some areas SNOW !!! I live in Ohio and HATE and DREAD the winters......too long and too hard.......very rough out here in this valley in the woods. Hard to get out and get around at times and this old house needs better insulated. Don't get much wind so that is a plus. We were getting serious tornado's every year late about this time of year wipeing out towns and had me pretty nervous but last year wasn't bad and this year it got cold fast. I'd be scared to death haveing to deal with the hurricanes.....so guess liveing in the safer zones has it's plus's with those fears. Ya pay dearly when liveing down south in paradise Pam Only thing that would worry me about sedateing my animals dureing storms is if for sum reason you got flooded or a tree fell on your house or something happen'd and you NEEDED your wits to get out of harms way or out of the water. My cats and several of my dogs are PARANOID now of storms after several years of the super cells we were getting durein the summer and the freaky intense storms in November. I have to admit....I am just as scared !!! I love it south tho.....our winters are too harsh and too cold and tooo long ! I hate that zero and below crap !!!! Wierd shit happens !!

Jeez, Annette, am I a thick head. It didn't occur to me until I was on my way to bed last night that your house is up for sale. That's why I responded like I did..... Sounds like a deal, but I just can't move that far away from my kids. I don't mind living alone, but I wouldn't want to move so far alone. I know there's no perfect place, but one does get mighty weary of the hurricane routine. We did the whole alphabet of names this year and are now on the Greek alphabet, already having gone through Alpha.

Philly has not too much snow, no major natural disasters (most of the time), but is quite $$$. You know, my grandparents bought their condo in 1972 when it was something like $25,000. Now it's worth around half a million at least.... How times change!!! We're never losing that place...it's my total heaven. I want to get married on the beach there so you should stick around and then you can come and not have to travel LOL No seriously....I'd live there even with the hurricanes...and maybe someday I will.

We live in the country, Essex County VA to be specific, where land can go for about 6 - 10 grand an acre. Still really cheap for VA. We're about 50 miles to DC, and 50 to Richmond, but still in really pretty farmland. Here's the nicest part: moderate temps, rarely ever a tornado, rarely ever a hurricane, earthquakes - nope. floods - nope. Just slow, easy way of life. We built our house on 5 ac, 1800 sf 3.5 yrs ago for (are ya ready for this?) less than $130,000 How does VA sound to you?

You could always check out Oklahoma, but you'd just be swapping hurricanes for tornadoes. Mudslides and earthquakes on the left coast, hurricanes on the Gulf and South Atlantic coasts, sweltering heat in the South, blizzards in the North and tornadoes up the middle. Where the hell DO you go for decent weather year round?
