1926: Phyllis Milan-  my mother was born-  up she grew, losing her own mother at the age of 6.  Raised up by her father, older sisters and brothers, she went on to marry and give birth to 11 children (me being #3).
Today and always, she has the honor of being the most remarkable woman I have ever known.  Wish I could be there to give her a hug today.
Happy Birthday Mom!

Things that happened on October 23:

1956 Hungarian Revolution

The 1956 Hungarian Revolution, also known as the Hungarian Uprising or simply the Hungarian Revolt, was a revolt in Hungary lasting from 23 October to 4 November 1956. The revolt was suppressed by Soviet troops, and to a much smaller degree the Hungarian ÁVH (Államvédelmi Hatóság, 'State Protection Authority'). Anywhere from twenty-five to fifty thousand Hungarian rebels and 7,000 Soviet troops were killed, thousands more were wounded, and nearly a quarter of a million left the country as refugees. The revolution has led to a significant drop in support of Marxist-Leninists ideas in the Western countries.
