G'mornin' all. Ok, so the doc switched me to Topomax, and thanks to y'alls previous posts on the topic, I had a good "heads-up" on what to expect. I'm on a LOW dose (25 mg to start) and I thought I was doing just fine- till I had difficulty figuring out where in the fridge to put the butter. Or this morning when I couldn't figure out how to unlatch my seat belt. Its like everything on auto pilot is working, then *poof*, pilot light goes out for a moment. What am I to expect next week when the dosage goes to 50 mg? Then 75? Then up from there? How do you pple manage on 200+ mg??? Pain management: eh, so-so. Lots of pressure, lots of shadows, not too many ice picks, still gets rough for my 9pm attack. But it does seem to be working better (so far) than the vrap. I'll keep y'all posted as this progresses.

I quit after 3 days of 25 mg. Not only did I get dumber, but the headaches got worse. PF wishes.

| You wont even find the fridge because you will be in the yard wearing nothing but the butter. Seat belts wont be a problem. There aren't any on the roof of the car. Dont forget to duck at the overpass.

Topamax is only a problem if you have any IQ points left to lose. 200 mg for me was no problem.

It really worked for me for several months and the only cognitive impairment was with language. Took me half an hour to complete a simple sentence. By the time I figured out how to ask where the restroom was...well you get the drift. I'm having better luck with Depakote. Same level of pain relief without the mushy brain. Good luck. Kim

The thing about Topomax is that it is the only drug that I've ever used that is 100% effective controlling my epileptic seizures. The sad thing is that I had to quit taking it becuase it turned me into my crazy uncle....paranoid, very forgetful, and pretty much a moron. I let newspapers build up for two weeks without lookiing at the things and spent too much time wondering what or who was making the imaginary noises. My neurologist is thinking of adding just a tiny bit to my Lamictal to see if just a small dose would be enough. You never know. Topomax was pretty effen weird for me. Charlie

| It does not really get to much worse and you do learn to compensate. (Tip) use spell check, post it notes and lots of list. Course I can't spell even when I am not on the shit. It is almost like I got used to it after a while I did not even notice. I was in my 12 months strait with out a break and I have now been pain free from April on. I was able to stop taking topamax June. So if it works for you and you can tolerate being dumb for a while it is worth it!!!

Topamax made me dumber than a box of rocks !! I couldn't help my son with his 4th grade math !! (fresh out of college too) The worse part came in the form of stones ... kidney stones. Twice. The first requiring surgery (lithotripsy). Now that hurt pretty bad. Like trying to piss out a brick !! All that and it did nothing to help my clusters! I'll never touch the stuff again. Hope you have better luck. UNsolved

I guess the funniest part of all of this is that if y'all knew me in person, you'd almost not even know anything was different! At least at this point I can still laugh at myself. Pain mgmt is still same: so-so. Thanks for all the input and the anecdotes

I hope it works out for you, and if not the Topamax, then some other combination... Whatever it takes for you to be pain-free, Jenn. Good luck and godspeed. -Frank
