I’m thinking about an allowance for Crystal. What do you think is a good allowance for a 15 year old girl? Who lives in NY…lol???
Do you think $50 a month is too much or too little? I think the idea of allowance is good, but why was it started? Reward for completing chores and abiding by the household rules? When I was growing up I was just expected to do the chores and follow the rules and shut up about it...  Is it to teach them the value of a dollar?
Crystal gets rewarded with something she wants for good grades and good report cards as well.
I’m honestly curious of your opinions.

My opinion:
Chores are done because they live in the house.
Allowances are given because they're part of the family.
My kids have gotten an allowance since they were 5. I make them split it 3 ways. For: spending, saving and charity.
Extra work around the house can garner them a few extra bucks, that is theirs to keep (no splitting). They get no money for good grades (I expect them) but they do get extra priveleges if they do well.

What will her allowance be for and what will you still provide? Will she be buying her own clothes or personal products or is that separate? It depends on what you are buying for her and what she will have to buy for herself I think.

My daughter got an allowance just for her own personal spending money--although, I wasn't real consistant with it.
Chores were expected, regardless. Look at how much you give her now for entertainment, shopping, etc. and base it on
that...just make sure she knows that she needs to use it for those things and hopfully save some as well. When my daughter hit 16 she worked a little, and really became more responsible about her spending and saving.

My kids don't get an allowance, but they get what ever they want as long as they keep up with their chores and if they want something big for instance, Anthony wants a PS2 whatever that is, I refuse to buy it for him. I think he should be outside doing somethin not sitting in front of the tv. anywho, I have him do extra things, like splitting firewood or cleaning out the garage and I pay him for it, it seems to be working out quite well for both of us

Allowance. I recall that. Used to get different amounts depending on my age.
As a kid, I got little something (around $2) to buy candy on Saturdays. When I was Chrystal's age, I got $20. That money was for all my personal things such as non school books, cds, videos, jewellery, gifts for friends, etc. My parents still bought necessary clothes and school books.
I did get extra when I got great grades in school, but that bonus was $2/ A. It was more of a symbolic gesture.
At 15, I took care lots of our family's grocery shopping, so I got so called household money for that.
I was never paid for doing house hold chores; it was my duty to clean up my room, help in the kitchen, cook, bake, set the table, wash dishes occasionally, help in the garden and clean both of our rest rooms each week.

P.S. This reminds me: one of my first worlds was "budget"...

If I would have gotten an allowance, I would have been on cloud 9.
I had a ton of chores, as a kid. It was part of being part of a family, and if I got good grades, well, I was doing what was expected.
Then again, I'm well on the way to being an old fart. LOL

Damn! I never got an allowance EVER!
But ok, in NYC??? 50 bucks a month seems reasonable.
It's not too little so that she can actually buy stuff and not too much for her to get in trouble with...
But make sure she keeps a journal of expenses so you know where everything goes to the penny. Plus it'll teach her to manage budget and balance a checkbook....

I always got an allowance (pretty small) in return for doing specific chores around the house .... up to the age when I was able to mow lawns and babysit. Once I turned 13 ... goodbye allowance, hello work! At the age of 15, can't your daughter find certain little jobs that could earn her money?
I don't know the difference between where you live and I do in terms of cost of living. When my daughter turned 15, she was old enough to become a lifeguard. I urged her to take the training. She was never without a job once she completed it. Before that, she did babysitting and ran errands for the older folk in our neighborhood.
It's a dilemma, for sure!

I got an allowance as a kid. It was pretty good and I supplemented it by mowing lawns. It was about $1.50 a lawn back then.

I think that an allowance is good because kids dont have jobs. I am sure she would like to have a job and make lots of money, but school work is more important right now. I think its only fair.
The allowance shouldnt be high enough for her to buy drugs or anything, but if she wants to grab an icecream with friends, or if she wants to get a bottle of water somewhere, its nice to have the money. It should teach her the value of money if she wants to save up for something. Like lets say she wants to buy something that costs $200. She needs to learn how to budget and save money so that she can eventually get the $200.
I am a little different than most when it comes to my opinion on parenting. IE, i would never say" its my roof and you must do what i say as long as you are under my roof" that only teaches her to long for the day when she can move out and probably create distance in your relationship. Also, we are talking about a friggin KID. a KID isnt supposed to have their own roof, so i wouldnt penalize her or make her feel bad about it.
I say to my daughter " this house is your house as much as it's mine, however, i am the boss."
Thats just my opinion. you are thinking of doing $12 per week strictly for fun or entertainment? I think thats fair. Its not like she has to buy food and clothes. She is in NY? NYC?
Lemme know what happens. I'm gonna be in your situation in not too much time.

I started giving allowances when the kids started school. I always told them that school is their "job". So in a way, my kids work everyday, just like nani and papa. It's important to keep them interested in school, especially when they are too young to work, but old enough to want to buy their own stuff. Bribing is setting a bad precedent, IMO. What is their motivation to do well, if no one's around to offer a bribe?

LOL Nani, the you tell me how to get her to try on clothes to see what fits? Do it while getting her dressed in the morning just doesn't work to well, but since the bribe failed, I am doing that anyway.

Okay here's my two cents worth...
My parent's never followed through on giving an allowance...and neither did Randy and I...we talked about it, tried it, forgot about it, tried again, forgot, etc... but mostly we just gave them money as they needed it...if it was for something resonable...and of course sometimes for things that weren't really reasonable... It sounds pretty irresponsible...but they turned out okay...and so did I, I think!
So I guess my point is, if you're going to do it be prepared to follow through with it, otherwise it kind of defeats the purpose.
I know...I'm no help at all!

I dont know how it started. I had many chores as a child, Feed animals(Chickens, ducks,geese, pony, collect eggs 2 times a day take out trash and burn it and of course keep my mess picked up)
I use allowance to help my kids have a life. I like them to work for the things they want. They do get penalized for bad grades, not doing thier chores and such. I will often let them do more work for xtra money they might want. Son 16 gets $15 a week, 1st Daughter 7 gets $5 week She spends it faster than she can get it., 2nd daughter 4 gets $1 week . Son often does more around the house to earn more. He is very good about saving it up for things he wants.
