The first time a bandmate turned me onto the band "Nitro" I about shit! The singer, Jim Gillette, had a voice higher than that of King Diamond - a falsetto monster metal singer. The guitar lines were just a blur during the solos, and then me and my buddy Todd saw Michealangelo on Headbanger's Ball that weekend playing his 4 neck guitar and explaining why he was the 'fastest guitarist in the world.' We were like... WHAT THE... WHO THE?????
GAME OVER! YOU WIN! CAN'T GET ANY FASTER THEN THAT!"
Later though, it would turn out to be known, we found that a little guy named Frank Gambale had him beat on speed, but Michaelangelo is STILL the only guitarist I have seen whip two necks at once with hammer-ons was AMAZING!
Coincidentally, at the same time, NIRVANA made it big and suddenly guitar solos were for the most part "boring self indulgence" the grunge/ new alternative era was born.
I said metal would return with a vengeance - NOT with all the "BIG HAIR" shit! You would not believe all the ridicule I put up with in the 90's with that.
Then nearing the end of the 90's it came: Bigger, stronger, tougher, harder and meaner!!!!!!!!
Who is to thank for it?
The grandfather of metal - OZZY OSBOURNE!!!
Here are the facts: since "Ozzfest" debuted as an official touring festival, they were influencing a whole new genre of metal. It has built up the new metal arena with acts like Disturbed (Ten Thousand Fists releases SOON!) , Slipknot, Coal Chamber, Arch Enemy, Shadows Fall, etc. "KORN" was actually one of the first "NUE METAL" acts to debut in '94 back when they were the 'little metal band that could' and have reached cult status. They do an awesome job redoing Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall (part II)" as well.
Guitar solos are BACK IN STYLE!
To me though, Randy Rhoads will forever be the true master of the metal guitar. He was the one who made me want to trade my drums in for a guitar.
I must say in all honesty though - this video of Michael Angelo is probably his most tasteful work I have ever heard.
And if you want to know how Steve Vai became master over his sensei Joe Satriani - he either a) Sold his soul to the devil like his character in the 80's movie with Ralph Macchio "Crossroads".... or b) My theory is - picture him with short hair. GEEK! He had no friends, had no life, and just kept playing all day, every day!
Classic Steve Vai / Frank Zappa introduction to each other. Vai starts shredding and Frank says "That'll be enough out of you. Sit down." LOL!
Thanks to digital technology and alot of fan torment, Steve Vai re-released his highly sought after 10" LP "Flex-Able Leftovers" on CD with a few new cuts. "Little Pieces of Seaweed" to this day is the most bizzarre yet wonderful thing my ears had heard at 15: "And the pelicans....the pelicans... have their way with her... and I threatened her with... I threatened her with... a pelican!" All of the vocal work was spontaneous poetry and ramblings that Vai set to disturbing music.....
Oh shit... I just realized, I am entering day 3 of no sleep and rambling again.....

Seen Joe Satriani several years ago........I mis goin to concerts but NOT the crowds they try and overpack in them places. We still see alot of bands but try to keep it in a more tolerable atmosphere. Anyone remember the GODZ........they play around here alot and at several of the outside parties. They can still BELT IT OUT and keep goin till late. They hang out with some of our freinds and play at there outside parties. "Rock and Roll Machine" Pam (there hit years ago)

But I have a question for the guitar folks out there.
My son (15)recently bought his first acoustic guitar and is trying to learn, depite genes that lack musical prowess. He's in lessons and is doing well according to his teacher. A while back we went to a Paul Brandt concert, and he had his guitar signed by Paul. The signature is in black marker, and will wear off in time....so I was wondering if there is any way to protect the signature, or if he's doomed to lose it over time ?
I have to sign off the board soon, but please pm me if anyone has any advice

Joe autographed this on for me.
I asked around after I got that and every one told me to retire the guitar. It's not safe to try and spray clear coat or anything like that on it because it could possibly dissolve the marker.
The only real good advice I got was to get a clear piece of that cling stuff that sticks to windows and put that over it.
One other guy told me that if I was REAL careful, I could spray just a little bit of clear coat and wait for it to dry repeating the process till it builds up thick enough to protect the autograph.
Myself...... I don't put anything over it. I'm just real careful when I play it.

I would think if ya misted it LIGHTLY and could let it dry then do it again you could get a protective coat over it to save it. But I dunno for sure......would want to hang onto that autograph tho. I wonder if the sticky clear stuff mite take up the ink tho or absorb it ? I have tried to do that before and ruin'd stuff. It even took the shine off and couldn't buff it back out with something written ya wanted to save. Keepin it live Pam
What the heck to they do with all the autographs on Jay Leno's bikes he has the guests do with magic marker ? How does he save those I wonder.......seems it's wear off real quick and not be able to wash it or nothin. Was curious bout that last time I watched his show.

Hey Pat,
Go to an arts & crafts store and look for a spray called "Tuffilm Fixative". Years and years ago when I had my old Westone, I had it signed by Phil Keaggy and sprayed it with this stuff. It went on clear, and preserved the marker for longer than the guitar lasted. The day after I bought my Jackson Stealth I gave the Westone to a friend who was begging me to teach him guitar.
My Jackson is 13 years old now, and believe it or not, the neck is STILL as good as it was the day I bought it. The strings on the old Westone would sit almost a full quarter inch off the frets at the 12th, and had to use alot of finger pressure when soloing or playing high notes. When I started playing the Jackson - man my fingers FLEW all over that neck.
