My internet provider..........

I got a letter from my internet provider that we use too much bandwidth, and if we continue to do so, they will deny us further service.

WTF?????????    We have a satellite provider.  Is this normal?

They said either we have a virus or we are file sharing... but we are using 20% more bandwidth than anyone else on the network.

We dont have a virus (dont think - we'll be running scans tonight) , but we do download movies and stuff, and we have two computers .......... does THAT matter?  What could we do to use up too much bandwidth. ???

Is this normal??  Can they do that?

The thing ya gotta really love about ISPs... They sell you a service claiming you get so much bandwidth for this price, but if you actually use that bandwidth, they tell you that you're using too much... "You can't possibly legitimately use that much bandwidth..." Then why do they even bother offering the bandwidth if we're not expected to use it?  Damn scam artists are all they are.

I would recomend that you read your service agreement with your ISP.  Any conditions that they can use to terminate service must be listed in the terms of service.  If using too much bandwidth is a condition, then perhaps you should consider a new provider.

Tina,

I think I read about this on a forum.   Not sure what the satellite providers name was...but several were complaining about the bandwidth allowance.

Thanks Tina,
I will be careful before trying something like that. If they question file sharing, tell them Bittorrent is the best way to get your Linix distros.
I ussually max out my DSL all night.

The fine print on Charter cable modem here says you cannot have a server on your system using the pipeline.
As for the downloading and using multiple computers, my brother has I think 4 or 5 machines in his house all running at the same time and have never had any problems. My old guitarist runs a puter business and there are anywhere between 5-10 machines on at the same time there. I would get ahold of your ISP and ask them what the deal is.

Peace,
Mack D
