"Steroids cause depression!"
He took a steroid shot (Decadron) on Friday. He doesn't type, but wanted me to post for everybody, so I'm dictating verbatim for him (hope we posted in the right area!)...
"I've been PF for 4 days, but what a heavy price to pay. I have felt very threatened by events political, meteorological, and physical. I drink coffee, try to get my energy back, but it's very hard.
"If I didn't have a gig coming up on Sunday, it would be okay, but I'm under pressure to be a musician. Drugs may be cool, but they don't let you be yourself. They take the pain away, but they don't leave you with what you might need. And that sucks!
"The pain is excruciating, and the drugs took it away. But I want to do the things I want to do, and that's not possible with the lowered energy level. I'm sure many of you active CHers understand that, and share my frustration.
"Being a guy that is used to having a reserve of energy that can always be relied upon, it's unbearable... Hey man! Let's form a Cluster Band!.
"Really, I love you guys. Maybe Michelle and I can be at Davcon to meet some of you face to face.
"But my big question is: How have we offended God and how can we appease Him or Her? I'm sorry that I had so much fun when I was young. Please tell me that this isn't a payback!
"I know it's not, but as we all know, when you're in the middle of an episode, you want to know WTF you could have done to deserve this!
"I have reached the point where I have experienced so much pain, that I might as well just stick a knife in me, twist it around and get it over with.
"Well hey, don't this make us special? I feel so special! HA HA HA (Crazy laughter...!)"
Well, that was Richard. I just thought you should hear his voice instead of mine for once. One of these days I'm going to make him peck out his own messages on his own keyboard, but for now, I remain his supporter and his typist! (I heard that! I am NOT an Enabler!  )

I hear you bigtime Richard. I think fatigue is a definite result of CH, especially with the sleep loss. It is also hard to try to explain to someone else just how draining one cluster attack can be. If you get them several times a day, it is exhausting. One thing that helps me sometimes beat that sluggish feeling is Ginseng, but I think some Ch'ers have had bad experiences with Siberian Ginseng.
I'ved asked the 'why' question so much I lost faith in any God. It has only been a year since I have had any belief in God whatsoever. I still look for the answer to the question of why bad things happen to children.
If you make it to DavCon, I'll prolly have an acoustic geetar with me. All we need now is a harp player...

Although I've been very low during ch attack, I've never questioned my faith in God.
I believe personally that ch is not a punishment, but just another bump on the road. Another lesson to learn.
I believe that in my case I got it so that I would have to face myself and learn to treat myself better, which I've been doing now.
If ch would be a punishment, it would never have lead us to know about each other via DJ's site. Nope, we'd all be suffering alone.

Just to let y'all know - I got him to register - he is "twenty2strings"... and, no, he's not in the UK! I'll fix that tonight when I get home. It was too hard to walk him through over the phone on my lunch break...

I couldn't agree more with you on steroids. I hate them too.
Haven't been on any meds since last year. They all messed with me. Plus as a musician, they would affect the way I played... Good luck to both of you!

He didn't mean someone had said it here - he meant that the steroid shot took the pain away, and that was cool - but he was questioning the price he paid for that...
Anyway - I was typing as he was talking and I may have missed a word in there as I was transcribing....
Sorry for the confusion!

I understand and all my thoughts to you. Here is something that worked for me. no drugs and not invasive:
35 years ago, I met a no-nonsense neurologist, that while he was on everyone's list as a nut, for me he was a godsend. I had just begun seeing him for my epilepsy when my fall CH cycle began.I made an extra appointment hoping he could help me deal with this horror. He could and he did.
Dr. Wright’s Circulatory Technique:
I am not sure what mechanism is triggered by this but whatever it is, at least indirectly helps kill the pain. I do know that this technique has nothing to do with meditation, relaxation, or psychic ability. It is entirely physical and takes some work. It involves concentrating on trying to redirect a little circulation to the arms, hands, or legs. It can described as a conscious circulatory flexing. Increased circulation will result in a reddening and warming of the hands. Try to think of it as filling your hands with redirected blood. The important and difficult part is that it has to be done without interruption through the pain. Do not give up in frustration. It may not work on the first try. Every now and then it will work almost immediately. I lived for those moments. Try experimenting between attacks. You will find that it gets easier with practice.
I was given less than five minutes instruction in the use of method. The doctor, while placing his arm on his desk, showed me that he could slightly increase his arm and hand circulation. After several attempts, I was able to repeat this procedure and use it successfully. I have had about a 75% success rate shortening these attacks. My 20 minute attacks were often reduced to 10 minutes or less. Once proven that I had a chance to effectively deal with this horror, I always gave it a try as I had nothing to lose but pain.
Perhaps it will help if you think of it as trying to fill the arm as if it is were an empty vessel. I used to try to imagine I was pushing blood away from my head into my arm. Use your imagination. There is one man who wrote that his standing barefoot on a concrete floor shortened his attacks. This may be similar as it draws some circulation away from the head. Cold water, exercise, or anything affecting circulation, seems to be worth a try. My suggestion is to not let up immediately when the pain goes. Waiting a minute is probably a good idea. So long as you do not slack off, this has a chance of working.
This technique is very useful while waiting for medication to take effect or when none is available. It costs nothing, is non-invasive, and can be used just about anywhere. It is not a miracle but it helped me deal with this horror. It can be a bit exhausting but the success rate was good enough for me and a cluster headache sufferer will do just about anything to end the pain. It gives us a fighting chance.
