Nurses, Anyone who knows Diabeties- Help?

Anyone who has any expirience with diabietes I would appreciate your insite. ok Here is the deal
Shaun (my husband) was diagnosed with Diabetes in August. They put him on Glukophage (probably spelled that wrong) and told him to check his blood 3 times a day. For the most part is stablized him at first. In the past 2 weeks though it has been way too high. His blood suguar will be close to 300 in the middle of the day and this is before he eats lunch.
Yesterday he left work and went to the doctor. His blood sugar was over 600 and he had a fever. The doctor gave him a shot of something that lowered his sugar and told him he had an upper respitory infection.
He started his antibiotic and slept a lot yesterday. He went to work this morning and had his first break and started to feel really hot and sick to his stomach. He checked his blood and it was 126. So we walked back into the building. They next thing that we remembers is smelling salts and he was lying on the ground because he passed out.
We took him back to urgent care cause his doc was not in yet and they said that they did not know what was wrong with him but that they wanted to hospitalize him. He told them no. We talked to his doc after that and she said that he migiht be insulin resistant. What the fuck is that?
He went and had some blood work done so check his insulin levels. What shoudl I do? I am worried as hell about him but I cant take time off work and if he missees anymore of his work he will lose his job.
Any advise or insight to this wound be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a nurse but I have had a lot of experience dealing with diabetes because of my father.

High (or low) blood sugar levels are SERIOUS and not to be ignored. Get in touch with a medical professional IMMEDIATELY.

I agree with the previous post - he needs immediate medical attention. If it was metabolic syndrome (pre-diabetes), then diet and exercise alone might be enough. I don't know for sure if that will help him at this point, especially if he has a fever and the blood sugar is way up. Will do some digging for options to consider once he is stabilized. Hope he gets back to normal soon.

I've been out of nursing so long, I've forgotten much more than I remember. However, if he has an infection or illness, it will make his glucose levels fly all over the place. The fever and other illness symptoms aren't probably related to his diabetes, but whatever he has is certainly making his diabetes out of control. To the doc ASAP. If that means the hospital, it does. Sit on him if you have to.

I am a nurse and this is some of the stuff I have.
A saying I learned.....Hot and dry my sugar is high, Cold and clammy I need some candy. Will alert to a change in status and the need for insulin or candy.
He more then likely was given a shot of insulin to bring the insulin level down and may need it to regulate or may just be the infection is the reason. And the PO med Glucophage will be plenty once the infection is gone.
Insulin resistance, linked with to much insulin in the blood, linked with hypertension for unknown reasons.

I think that is scared him that he passed out like that at work. He had this insulin LEvels blood work drawn tues. His folwoup is Tuesday next week. We need to get the referals started to get him into an endochronologist. But if he passes out again, I wont give him the choice and we will head tot he hospital with a call to his doc to meet him over there.
I know that he is in denial. And he is one of the world toughest patience because he is an ex-Army nurse.
He is heavy, not huge but does have like 50 labs to lose. So I think that that had a lot to do with it. His work offers a membership the gym so no enrollment fee and you only pay monthly. So I hope that he actually uses it once he joins.

Diabetes is nothing to mess with. I'm with the folks here. If he is getting any worse, get him to the ER fast as you can. I lost my old man due to diabetes gone haywire.

I am a reasonably well controlled diabetic. A ruptured ovarian cyst sent my blood sugar over 700 and it took almost a week in the hospital to get it normalized.
There are many wonderful drugs out there, glucophage is usually the first line of defense and can be mixed with other meds, particularly with insulin resistance. It can take time to find the right combination and it's really good to keep a log of meals, meds and tests to give to his doc. Sometimes a change in routine can work wonders.
