For my kids... no TV until AFTER homework and chores are done. They average about 2 hours total. During the summer, I'm pretty laid back about it. For the most part, they don't overdo it. When they were little, I only let them watch "educatuional" stuff like Sesame Street and nick jr shows. I let them watch a lot back then. Probably 4 hours a day Just my

| ------------------------------------------------------------------- Ditto .............. I also don't let my daughters have tv's in their bedrooms.I not only want to know and yes control somewhat the programs they watch but together time even sitting and watching tv is important to me.I just get tired of the same shows over and over like full house.they are getting into music and have CD players but I make the CDs and try to oversee what they listen too.Quantity V.S. quality I think is a personal family decission.TV doesn't come before homework and time outside.Did I answer your question ?depends on day to school day or weekend . Minnie Aprils 8 and Beth will be 7 september 30th.

I agree, minnie. No TVs or computers in their rooms. I know what you mean about the same shows and movies over and over again!! But I like keeping up on what they're watching and I often watch with them and talk about what happens.

My wife, Krista and i are in total disagreement with the amount of TV we let our daughter Dianan watch. She's 5. 1 thing is that Dianan never used a pacifier, never had a 'bankee' or any other traditional item used for comfort. What makes her feel comfy is sound, typically TV, but radio works too. Even if the TV is only white fuzzy snow, the sound of it makes her feel comfy. Silence makes her feel scared as hell. So, point is, she has a TV in her room (only VCR) and can watch 1 movie at bedtime. My wife would prefer to let dianan watch cable TV cartoons literally all day. I feel that too much TV is not healthy mentally or physically for kids or adults. So my wife and i compromised on 2 hours of TV and 1 movie at bedtime. The only thing is, wifey doesnt monitor it, and the damn TV stays on most of the day anyway. I HATE TV!! TV is responsible for the dumbing down of america. The TV helps to make sheep, and sheep get slaughtered. Oyi vay, I sound like my parents now. God, I AM a parent.

My children are young adults (19 & 17) and we still battle it out over TV and PC privlidges. But we have restrictive rules that we adhere to. These obviously became less restrictive over the years but my children insist we are the only parents they know who are so restrictive - we just tell them to deal with it. I absolutely believe that given the nonsense on TV these days, unsupervised and/or unrestricted TV time for children can actually become a poor substitute for doing something constructive and learning how to interact in real-life situations. Not to mention the influence most TV programming can have on children. PCs with internet access are even worse (pardon this serious understatement). But don't make a typical adult mistake and park yourself in front of the tube while restircting your children's access. Spend as much time with them as you can/whenever you can. Changing oil on your car(s), negotiating a price on a major appliance, etc. is an opportunity for growth (even if it only helps children realize that they never want to do it). Do something with them even when they don't like it, or it slows you down. These are great opportunities to show children how real-life interaction takes place while re-enforcing the values you want to instill in them. Good luck and best wishes to all you folks with young children - the fun is just beginning and it doesn't really stop when they think they are all growed up. Tom

Out here in the country, I've found that the more parents spend their time outside, the more the kids do. My daughter will be 11 next month, and like the others, she does her homework 1st thing when she gets home, but then I take her to Karate class 3 x a week, and she usually gets 1-2 hrs of TV time in before bed, but that is sometimes interrupted by me telling her to do stuff, lol. I also have a 2 yr old boy, who definately takes after his dad, because he wants to be outside constantly. He enjoys Sesame Street in the morning and Blues Clues occasionally, but he'd rather be outside getting dirty. As a kid, I watched a LOT of TV, suffered for it through my schoolwork and my weight. I try really hard now, to find things for my kids to do other than watch the boob tube. mel

| Im like Dianan... I like white noise.....when I was first married and my husband wasnt home (before kids) I would find I would leave the water running.......I didnt even realize I was doing it til my friends and hubby pointed it out to me..... Now whether Im watchin it or not the tv keeps me company in my kitchen every day.....It is a bad habit..... but better than listening to the chatter that goes on in my head when it isn't on...... Its my friend...... As far as kids go..... I run a family daycare... when they arrive at 7:30 am. I am watching "Good Morning America". They have free play while they are awaiting other kids, I'm having coffee with my friends on GMA while I watch the kids play. Then tv goes off.....9:00 we have music time, weather time, craft time, snack time, outside time.....when we come in while Im making lunch they get a choice of Dora.....Blues Clues or Sesame Street all learning shows.... then its off again at lunch, we have naptime and then they get up have a snack and go home....and unless we have terrenchial downpours and run out of activities it doesnt go back on til....Oprah's on..... for me.....! TV can be a tool... it can also be a babysitter.... Parents that use TV as a babysitter will find that half the time their kids arent even watching it.....it becomes white noise as in my life. If they use it as a tool ie: when they get a phone call. Or as incentive, it can be a great thing..... With my daughter(11years old) I watch with her. Though she is now watching a little more to unwind. She enjoys the Disney channel and I approve of the shows there. With daycare kids as Im cooking I am also interacting with the show that they are watching and sometimes theres a lesson that comes from the show we watch. But it is a great tool for me to use. They actually sit and watch because there is so little tv going on during child care hours. We actually learn sing dance create and converse... ree

TV ruin'd my kid.....but.....I had unusual circumstances to 'let it happen'........I didn't know what else to do and was a gawd send to me when I noticed it pacified her. She would thru horrid screaming fits for 2 to 6 hours straight for days one end. I was exhausted and did not know WHAT to do. Took her to the doctor ALOT and they could find nothing wrong with her and told me to make sure she was fed and clean and close her door and go outside whatever cuz there was NO satisfying her......we tried everything. I have heard recently there is a name for a condition babies or kids have where all they want to do it eat.......24/7 ? No one picked up on anything like that for me......I was ready to CRACK !!! (I was a mental mess and no baby sitter much......once a month or so off and on for the first 2 years if lucky) I set her in front of the tv one day in her high chair and she was quiet all day long !!! I realize now how bad that was for her.......mentally she didn't grow cuz she was hypnotized by tv. When it was time to decorate the Xmas tree she would stand and stare at the tv and not talk or help me......she could not stop stareing at it and would stand in a daze. I'd get so upset with her......could not get her to connect with anything else. If I turned it off she complained and I got tired of that too......then she wanted to eat eat eat and throw terrible rageing fits tryin to eat my arms hair and clothes if I got near her. As she got older she was NEVER an outside person......never wanted to be outside goin for walks or doing anything and would sneak back in if we were outside doing projects and I'd freak when I noticed her not on the swingset. (puttin up fence and stuff rite near by). She'd sneak in to EAT. Used to take her on road trips and she would sit in the back seat complaining about food and not look around and pout or read comic books. She didn't enjoy being anywhere....she'd see people eating and stand and stare and I would have to drag her away. Arghhhhh.......tv was the only thing that kept her from the fits and eating complaints as much. She didnt' like trail rideing horses either....I had to make her go and tricked her telling her we were rideing to the little store down the road which we did to get some treats and....at least it worked and I got to go. Later she discover'd the phone.......24/7 she was on it and nothing you said or did stopped her. Ripped it out of the wall one time. Got a side car for the bike to be able to ride and do stuff.....she totally HATED that too but we went on picnics (that ways he didn't throw a fit cuz it was food related) and did all sorts of nice rides which she hated and pouted on. Have told this story before....but I think tv and them dam video games RUIN kids minds. Kinda like a animal bein kept in a cage and mind never developes from lifes everyday learning expirences they have TUNED OUT. My kid is doin ok now with 3 kids of her own....perfect job for someone that doesn't have too many interests outside the home I guess. I hate them video games where ya get points for killin and runnin people over.....there so real it has to make it easy to do it in reality. And almost mentally prepares them for it. Tune'd in to being tuned out Pam

We don't say a lot about TV here. I fought with my kids for years about TV. It did no good they watched stuff I did not want them to at their friends home. I don't feel like fighting for the next 18 years. Our TV is programed for only G rated movies. JD has Vidios and DVD that we bought for him that are all educational. He usually watchs them. He can watch one hour of TV in the morning. After school he can watch and do what ever he wants in the range f the vidios and DVD and what we have programed into his TV. JD likes outside. He stays outside a lot. At night he can watch TV if he has done his chores. Clean his play room, helped me with cleaning up the house. He helps cook too. If he does all that without a fuss then he can watch TV at night. JD likes the computer better than the TV. His computer is not on line so he can only do what CD roms we give him. He has one game that is packman. He loves the head start games. At night we try to play some kind of game with JD. That keeps him away from TV. I guess I have found the less you say about TV and the more you give kids to do that they like, then they don't have time for it. It keeps the fussing down. We just started this the beging of summer and it has worked for us. JD might get two hours a day some times three if its raing. He is only 4 so he can have the TV on and be playing with his trucks and not even pay any attention to the TV. Lately he has been intrested in Music and plays a lot of his CD . He puts them on and plays. He has learned that when you turn on music you turn off the TV LOL. Before JD was born the TV did not come on till Buddy came home at night. TV is something I enjoy just before bed. I like quiet !

2 hours a day, total, should be enough during the school year. We learned the hard way about TV's, video games, phones. NEVER, EVER let your child have a TV, video games or a phone in their room! You cannot monitor what they watch on TV. They WILL sneak in games that are nasty & violent and when caught will say "Oh that, I don't pay any attention to the violence. I only play the game for the entertainment value" That's bullcrap! If they have a phone you have no idea who they are calling or who is calling them (usually at 3am). My kids are long out of the house and raising kids of their own. Wish they'd get the hell out of my wallet.

I'm sure my parents had restrictions on tv when we were little, but I don't remember ever having any problems with whatever they said. I know I was a demanding little brat about them not forgetting to tape record Fraggle Rock, Reading Rainbow, and other "kiddie" programs that came on tv while I was outside or at preschool. We had a computer - actually got our first computer when I was 5. The first thing I remember 'playing' on the computer was a typing program...which is how I learned to type so much so fast. Then we had games like Reader Rabbit and Writer Rabbit. hehehe My mom taught me how to read before I went to kindergarten. These are the things I remember. All kinds of arts and crafts. We sang a lot of songs, read a lot of books, and played outside a whole lot! My parents took us to a lot of Cardinals games to watch Ozzy Smith play...that I remember. I watched "All My Children" on ABC from when I was little. Every day at 1pm. No worries...it didn't screw me up for life. I never had a tv or computer in my room until after I finished high school, but now I'm a bit of an addict! haha Still love to read and would always rather be out doing something than sitting inside at the tv, but it's just not possible most of the time for me! My 2 cents worth Lizzie2/Carrie

I don't have kids so I can't give you an opinion from that perspective. As a teacher though, Ree nailed it!! TV could be a great tool in teaching children whether it is used directly as the method of learning or as a motivator..making it contingent upon doing other stuff. You have to make your own rules but more than anything..... You and your wife need to be on the same page for your daughter to benefit in life in general!! Good luck! E

When I was little my mom used to watch soap operas and American Band Stand eating a big bowl of chips and big pieces choc candy with vanilla inside sittin on the floor doin her leg exercises so she didn't get fat. I never had much interest in tv.......I played with my turltes and record player that played REAL records. I had all my plastic toy horses and indians and cowboys and was creative playing with everything. Loved to try and fix up my room or move things around or jus look out the window late at nite (insomnia) for hours sumtimes till the wee hours of the morning. Loved watching Red Skelliton and Ed Sullivan with my parents in the eves and Outer Limits and Twilight Zone became my favorite shows to watch. Kids just don't do that kinda tuff anymore. Too high tech......nothing much is realistic. Hazy daze Pam

I am not a big TV fan and never was. I was always outside playing and still am physical. My kids were in a way very lucky I was too poor to afford computers, extra TV, or any form of video games when they were very young. I did not have cable either. When I moved here and started doing better they were older but I refused to buy a computer till the youngest was 14. I did not like the stuff and occasional pop ups on the internet. I felt that once the youngest was 14 we could talk about anything and I got one. NO one got a phone , TV, record player, video game in their room. Hell no. Things were located in the family room where I was around to monitor and two hours per day during the school week and four hours on weekends or summer. I had them in sports here in Montreal which meant yes I had to run them around and glad I did it and when we lived down south, the weather permitted them to play outside often and they did. Now that they are grown, (the youngest is 17) they watch more TV than I certainly do (fine their choice) but at least they have other interests, can hold conversations and are active people. I agree with you BMOnee too much passive activities like TV, computer etc is dumbing American and making people fat and unhealthy along with being brainless. A great future for our nation. People better wake up....

When I was a kid at the dawn of network television, I can remember making sure to the watch Saturday mornings for Roy, Gene, Lone Ranger....and many more. Then came Rocky Jones and Superman. I never missed them. We did like Bishop Sheen on Sunday morning but then the whole world did. I can't remember getting all that excited over evening TV as a kid and dad always had me helping him at something. He had to try everything new. I had fun with his cold war Civil Defense radio buddies. I use TV for white noise all the time though. I guess this has nothing to do with the thread but then that's because TV wrecked my concentration. Charlie

lets see..TV..... for starters we only have the Lifeline package of cable which is pretty much nothing, but it does have two public TV stations. My boys know that anything else is off limits unless they ask. Sesame street has always been a staple and now that they are older they watch other PBS shows(I love Between the Lions) when the come home from school while having a snack...and I am checking notices, forms whatever. Lots of times I watch WITH them, dance, sing with them along with the show ... Very important like Ree said. Then it's piano and homework and outside and dinner AT THE TABLE no TV. We only have one TV in the whole house. Now, I will tell you that there are days, especially this summer when I let them keep it on for hours, watch a movie (they are 6 and 10) because my head hurt. After a day of this they do get bored or tend to do other things while watching like build a weather station out of paper cups and tape or play cribbage....while they let me do my thing. I'll confess that at this point I could care less if it's background noise...drowns out the O2 darth vader sounds...though they do think that sound is cool. We used to say two hours(Sesame Street is an hour and then if they watched something geeky with us later) "screen time" total in a day includes TV, computers, videogames, and we find that we always have to re-evaluate. Now they are in school all day it's less....half and hour to an hour...if at all. And like E and Ree said we use it as a motivator too. They can watch TV if they've done certain things..like it's their job to take out the dog in the morning and if they don't when it's time, TV goes off or doesn't get turned on.
