These exact same symptoms are what put Mom in the home 5 years ago.  Only recently have there been commercials about this...

Maybe I'm just second, third and fourth guessing everthing right now.  What I know, what I think I know.  Mom's been back and forth one day good one day bad.  I think the phnemonia is beginning to take hold again, but the kidneys spontaniously began to work again and she's output 3 times the fluid in the last 48 hours than she did all week.  She drank down a 20 oz bottle of Rootbeer and a cup of coffee in an hour... Gawd the woman was thirsty...but she was caughing more today as well.  Asking if her Mom had been notified that she had been in the hospital.  She also said something that got me thinking.  She said..."I don't plan on being here very long."  Was that the dilusional Mom?  The one that still thinks she is going to to be able go live on her own again?  Or is this the Mom who knows that she is very very sick and has little time left with us?  I just can't know for sure.  One of her nursed today told us the story of her own Mother who they took home to pass after a massive heart attack and it took two years.  I don't think I could stand to see Mom suffer that long when she can't feed herself, is on a catheter and is bed ridden 22 of 24 hours.  Were she of sound mind she would hate to see herself this way.  I just don't know what to think anymore.

The stress has broken me out with a nice case of shingles across my back and down the backs of my arms as of this morning.   Gawd it hurts and itchs like mad....

So thats the latest news...

How old is your mother Redd.... also would you please be sure that she isnt allergic to penicillin or antibiotics too... that was one thing we never knew... and its what did my Dad in... on top of everything else...
It is very hard to watch your parents suffer.  But I like you didnt want him to linger on like that... be well and be strong... be sure to care for yourself while you are caring for her and running back and forth to the hospital etc... we have a tendancy not to.... my son scott had shingles while in Iraq... yep while he was in Iraq and they put him on valtrex ... it saved him and the fact that he was only 28 too... Good luck with the shingles... I can relate I have poison ivy right now and though it doesnt hurt like shingles it surrrrrrrrrre itches.....love ya  ree

I had an outbreak of shingles a few years back but it was isolated to the left arm only...started at the shoulder and down al the way to the fingers.  I have no insurance so going in for a script of Valtrex and Vioxx as last time is not an option.  Mom's not allergic to antibiotics.  I just have to wonder that when she is in her dilusional states, she believes that she has little ones at home and wonders who is careing for them, how are they eating ect.  We've thought about giving her "permission" to pass on...but who would we be speaking to?  Which "reality" ?  Would she be offended if she was the Mom with the little babies at home?  Would she be the Mom who never wanted this and understand?  There is no way to be sure.  Monday her primary Doc comes back from his fishing trip to Canada, so I'll be talking to him.  I left precise instructions with the nurse to get this set up.  However i have issues with her as well, as Mom can't seem to eat anything but mushy type foods, and instead of the Morphine drops that Doc Heabner scripted, she wanted to try to get her to swallow a horse pill of Ibuprophin. (She said she had a real bad headache) I was NOT about to risk her choking or aspirating on a huge pill. Why do I have to argue with these people.  I'm DPOA, and if Mom is in pain there is a script for the drops.

They are in the business of saving lives I understand this but don't argue with me on how to relieve Mom's discomfort here!

Had you thought your mom had Alzheimers before you thought of the NPH???   Did you know that Daves mom has Alzheimers too... I think there is a link to ch and alzheimers in parents... a few of the others had parents die or living with Alzheimers... Its so very hard to deal with the delusions... Sometimes Daves Mom thinks we are trying to hurt her... He is the most nurturing son...

You are a wonderful daughter know that!!!  Get some sleep... love ree

Mom's Dx is actually Lewy Body Dementia where there are Parkensen's Disease features present as well as Alzheimers...
But the gait, the urinary incontonance and the delusions all three were her symptoms, and it makes me wonder....The urinary problems were present first.  then the dilusions, and the gait soon followed.

As I said I may be reaching for straws here....second thrid and fourth guessing everything...I just can't stand to see her this helpless and she would be irate were she able to see herself this way...

I don't feel like a good daughter right now...I feel as though I've let her down to allow her to be in this position.

I think your a good daughter too !! I'm not real good in this area but have seen and heard of alot of symtoms quikcly diagnosed for people and treatments followed. Seems the treatments made new conditions arise or old ones worse.......then it turns into a big catch 22........some never second guess what is goin on until something like this comes up. Makes you wonder I'm sure. And doctors opnions are sumtimes just that......any way anouther doc can look at her or run tests. Just to be sure and ease your mind ? Have heard alot about people that are treated with heavy meds end up L0ST for years and never get the chance to 'recover' mentally and the meds drain them physically also. Seems as tho they are goin downhill and left at that. When taken off some of the meds it can be supriseing what there really was left hideing under the clouds. I think you've done good......just an idea if you feel it would put your mind at ease. Love to you Pam

I never did find out what happen'd to my grama many many years ago......they kept dopein her up on stuff when she had problems and then she ended up kind of out of it.....then she died. Everyone felt she was ready but sumtimes I wonder cuz she was one healthy fiesty lady when I knew her.

Edit cuz my spelling sucks this morning..........

Hiya Pegg,

First off many hugs to you and your mom!

I don't want to offer any false hope (but then, I  really don't believe in false hope - hope is hope, to  me)....but my great aunt had NPH.  She'd seemed very depressed, had a lot of memory loss, had a very shuffling gait, etc...  Lots of things that were seeming like alzheimers and parkinsons.  She was so depressed that everyone in my family was very worried about her - in some ways it seemed like she was just going to fade away.  It was such a quick decline that nobody really knew what was going on.

Turned out it was NPH.  She had a VP shunt placed to restore pressure, and it restored her to her normal self.  I can't even imagine where she'd be today if someone hadn't caught the NPH and placed that shunt.  I'm so greatful that someone did think of that.

So that's just our experience with it.  My great-aunt was a totally different person before the shunt was placed - you wouldn't have thought she'd be coming back to us ever.  And that was several years ago now.  She returned to our familiar Aunt Jeanne after that shunt.

I suppose, if it is NPH, it can make a huge difference in someone's life.  I know it did in ours.

Please take care of you!!!  Many hugs and much love,
Carrie Smiley
