while in Gulfport MS. There was only red cross coming in with small amounts of food supply, the red cross came in Thurs. the day we where leaving, just to look!! we asked them questions & they had no answers, we knew more then they did!!, they tryed to come in & take over the N.C. food that they have been feeding the people with, well that didn't happen, the N.C. Baptist churches stopped them cold!!they have been there 3 days after the storm came, they have a great system down, they are taking a bus load of helppers out after they have been there for 5 days & bring a bus load of helppers in to replace them, they have simi truck loads comeing in everyday with food & supplys from N.C. There is no shelters there couse they have been damaged & are not able to be used, so people are staying in cars, moldy homes, on the streets, & anywhere they can find to stay safe!! FEMA, none of any kind have been seen or heard from in Gulfport, the only supplys of help that I seen while there are from people & Chuches like us, & they are kicking people out of their homes becouse of the mold & mildew!! the water is no good, they can't even take showers!! thats why the baby wipes are so important to these people, & the water!!!! it's the only why they have to clean their selfs up!! their is dead bodys their also, & these people are liveing around them couse they have no where to go & they are still in shock & don't want to leave their homes!! they are so confused there & scared shitless!! I could not bring myself to take some pictures that the sick people have no problem taking, all I could think of is what if that was my mom or sister or dad!!! I covered & Prayed over the losed!! sorry all for now!! Jolene

WOW what nightmares. Red Cross and FEMA are about as helpless here. The two shelters that we have been going volunteer at have been up and running since the minute we knew survivors were headed our way. The Civic Center started out with the help of the community volunteers. Not until THURSDAY of this week did any Red Cross get there. The other shelter has been going from day one by the help of Catholic Charities. Red Cross came to take over and they gave them the boot...........people in charge there said they have been relying on the goodness of the people and why let Red Cross come in now only to bring their media with cameras to film what "they" had done!!!! Seems as tough we here in Louisiana are gonna have to do what we do best. Take care of our own. Thank God for the humanitarian efforts, seems as though relief efforts have to rely on just that which comes from our churches, and civic organizations, along with outpouring of donations from local businesses. Keep praying, EDNA

Thank you Jolene and Edna (and Redneck and darlin' too) for telling us what is REALLY going on. God forbid we ever have to believe the news and their spin doctors. I refuse to watch it anymore, not because I don't care but because no matter what I watch, UK, Euro, or US news - its all spin. I'm just reading what I need to know from here, the people who are there and who actually know. Love you guys Helen XXX

Our local shelter here in Farmerville (and several more scattered around in this area) are receiving NO funding at all from the Red Cross (they refused to activate them as shelters, saying that they needed to be at the Monroe shelter, n/m that the Monroe shelter was well over the number that is acceptable). So..... to make a long story short, the townspeople and local churches are supporting them. What is ironic here, is that these shelters are actually being run in a more efficient manor than those operated by the Red Cross. Will probably run up to our local shelter in Farmerville today to see what they need again. NO MONEY OF MINE will go to the RED CROSS.

| I have to agree with you there, when we got ben signed up with them here, they gave him a card for $360.00 that was it, the locol hospitals are not chargeing him a penny for treatment & Walgreens are not chageing his any thing for his meds. red cross doesn't have a clue!!, we asked them about shelters, supplys, meds, & things, couldn't tell us anything!! & the people are working things out for themselfs, they tried to come in & take over the food & supplys at the church we were at & I'll Tell you what the N.C. Bastist church people & the church people Back them right up!!!, we knew more then they did !! & they told them that!! & they looked at us & we told them what we knew & where we got our info. they left quitely!!! my point is this, this man has nothing but the close on his back & not a penny to his name & needs meds, & treatment, & they just give him $360.00 yes, thats a beginning, but this man is scared, alone, & has put his life & trust in our hands, I for one will not let him down!!! just makes me mad that they got all that money in & all they could give his some crumbs!! thats how I feel, then they tried to say that he wasn't even from there, yet a man that works there was one of the men that tom talked to before we left & he started the worker out really quick!! but what if he wasn't there, how would of Ben felt & where would his trust have been with us ? these people don't need more troubles, they need support & Help!!! Lots of Prayers & Love Jolene

When my uncle was in France, in 1944, the American Red Cross made the soldiers pay for doughnuts and coffee. Needless to say, he isn't much of a contributor. Charlie

I lost faith in the Red Cross in 1968. And the United Way is one of the sleaziest outfits ever. If I give it is either to a local charity or the Salvation Army. But, this is not the time or place to be discussing it. There's work to be done.

To put a different take to it...my personal experiences with the Red Cross have been nothng short of amazing. In 1984...a day and a wake-up after I moved in with my soon to be wife...my mother's house burned down. Almost to the ground. It started in the room across from mine and the entire upstairs was a total loss. Fire was out at 8:05AM & the Red Cross was there at 8:10 (no exaggeration folks). They got my mom & sister set up that night in a nice furnished apartment. Got all their insurance info together & contacted the insurance company, took them out to breakfast and gave them couple hundred dollars of free food vouchers. They supported my mom through the entire ordeal. Then just late last year...one of the apartment buildings in my complex burned down. The Red Cross were there before our local news. Already set up and giving whatever help they could. I don't know what they are doing in the Gulf and I'm sure there are a lot of agencies that are inundated right now...but they sure took care of my mom and neighbors. God bless the families in the Gulf that are beyond suffering right now...I hope all is and will be done to get them through this and on their feet. Jimmy

Is this the same Red Cross who's top person: Marsha Evans's 1993 salary was $651,957. Is this the same Red Cross that after the devastating San Francisco earthquake in 1989, passed on only $10 million of the $50 million it raised and banked the rest? Is this the same Red Cross that bills victims for the second hand items donated to them? Is this the same Red Cross that charges members of the armed forces for sending them home for family emergencies? Is this the same Red Cross that got caught attempting to stage a meal for the press after hurrican Andrew -when the press interviewed people and found out that until the press's arrival they hadn't seen the Red Cross? Is this the same Red Cross that took in $564 million in 9/11 donations, used $154 million, then insisted they shouldn't be required to spend the rest for this disaster - causing Red Cross president Bernadine Healy to resign from her $450,010 position? My money went to the Salvation Army. "The $2.1 billion Salvation Army USA provides a different way to help. Peter Drucker called the army the most effective organization in the United States. No one even comes close to it with respect to clarity of mission, ability to innovate, measurable results, dedication, and putting money to maximum use." While the Red Cross practices ongoing organizational damage control, the Salvation Army pays top executive John Busby, $13,000 a year, plus frugal room, board and transportation expenses. Army officers work long hours for little material reward, largely because of the attitude Mr. Busby - "I don't miss anything you can buy with money. I'm in the will of God, doing what he wants me to do. There's no higher purpose than that." Their mission statement: "The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. . . . Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination." Religious initiatives like the Salvation Army offer a better alternative to bureaucracy-based charaties. The Red Cross has more resources to respond to emergencies but is criticized for its unwillingness to bet the farm every time out. Charities should have a higher purpose than organizational survival and high incomes for corporate officers. What should guide them them is Human Compassion and/or Faith in God. Tom

You know, since my mum retired she started to work for the Red Cross here in Finland as a volunteer. And when I asked her, if your RC will collect money to help Katrina's victim, quess what she replied? Well, she said: "It's a rich country, they'll take care of it". Yep, looks like it. But if one wants to help, why to have that attitude about it?

| That's a blatant lie. I was in San Francisco during the Loma Prieta earthquake and it's aftermath. The Red Cross raised $53 million for that disaster. After spending $23 million for it's intended use, the Red Cross announced plans to keep the remaining $30 million for future disasters. It said it's job was done, despite several hundred people still left homeless and hungry as a direct result of that quake. Local and state officials fiercely protested. When the media published those protests, many of the donors protested. The Red Cross then changed it's mind and spent the remaining $30 million on it's intended use. BB

| When the Loma Prieta earthquake struck, the local chapters of the Red Cross were the first responders (faster than any federal agencies) and deployed necessary resources quickly. After the first $23 million was spent, the Chairman of the Red Cross at the national level tried to abscond with the other $30 million before the job was done, to the dismay of the local Red Cross chapters. He failed in that inhumane and greedy ploy. Who was that Chairman of the Red Cross? George F. Moody, who had absolutely no experience in disaster relief efforts. For nearly 40 years Moody was associated with the California investment firm, Security Pacific Corporation, beginning in the credit and operations departments and rising through the ranks to become president in 1981. He was also the guy who fucked up the Red Cross' response to the AIDS epidemic and let the Red Cross' blood supply become infected with HIV. Who relaced him as President of the Red Cross in 1991? Someone with any experience in disaster relief and emergency response? No. Elizabeth Dole, wife of Senate majority leader Bob Dole. Bob Dole is best known for getting his ass kicked by Clinton in the 1996 Presidential campaign and becoming the poster boy for Viagra. BB

A correction: the Red Cross does not charge soldiers to send them home on Emergency Leave. The military flies them home for free and the Red Cross just delivers the bad news (I experienced that in Korea in 1977). I'm not a big fan of the Red Cross. During WWII, many American soldiers died because the Red Cross would not accept blood from black soldiers to give to white soldiers who needed transfusions.

| Maybe in 19977 Korea that was the case but in 1968 Vietnam I know of one soldier that accepted a "free" ride from the Red Cross when his father died. He didn't get a paycheck for 2 months afterwards. The Army "re-paid" the Red Cross.

| Bullshit. My Dad did 16 months infantry combat in the 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division in Europe in WWII. Anzio, Cisterna, Montelimar, Vosges, overran the Dachau concentration camp. Took Nurnberg, Munchen, Salzburg, Berchtesgaden and Hitler's Berghof at Obersalzberg. The Red Cross wasn't making the decisions about the blood supply then and there, the Army was telling the Red Cross what to do. The soldiers never questioned blood from blacks, whites or reds. They only refused blood from n a z i bodies . My Mom was an ambulance driver here in the USA during WWII while my Dad was at war in Europe and she confirms that. STFU if you weren't there. BB

We dropped a couple off at a red cross in Pensacola Fla for family members to pick them up from Jacksonville fla. we talked to some people who have been staying there, & they told us that in the middle of the nite, that red cross members & the police where throwing people out in the middle of the nite from Louisiana, & Mississippi, they were not giving them ride or anything to get them some where safe, & they were told that their area was not affited by the storm, & that they couldn't stay any longer, & this red cross was out in the middle of no where!! it took us 2 1/2 hrs from I 10 to get to the red cross, Now I'm sorry, but what kind of shit is that, plus one couple had 3 children with them. & they got kicked out the nite before we got there. God only knows what happen to them!!! & when my Grandmother die, we had to go through red cross to get him home from bagdad for her burial. & we had to pay for him to get here, red cross did nothing to help, all they did was send work to his commander so he could get leave time!! I Prayer that they get the ball rolling & get people tooken care of soon, cause people are dieing!!!
